C2 Site gafttj gtorfmt. ASTOllIA, OREGON: TUESDAY SEPTEMBERS, 1S85 Flaxseed seems to pay about as well as any Oregon crop this year, the "Willamette farmers getting $1.50 a bushel, cash, for all they raised, which beats wheat raising. The Albany Democrat denies the oft-repeated assertion that the farms of Linn county are covered with mortgages, and says that but a small proportion are. It says: "When one man gets heavily in volved the big eyes of the public alwavs see a dozen." The Oregon Democratic Jour nal wants to have the next legis lature pass a law compelling the O. R. & N. company to charge no more than two and thirty-nine- sixty-sevenths cents to carry a bush el of wheat from The Dalles to Portland. At present the freight rate on a bushel of wheat from The Dalles to Portland is twelve cents. The "Whatcom Jievcillc is in formed that not less than two hun dred Chinamen have crossed the boundary line from British Colum bia to that county, at or nea Blaine, during the past two months, and the number is constantly in creasing. It is believed that vast quantites of opium are smuggled through at the same time. Muni'iiY, of the Olympia Stand ard, who lias been running that paper for twenty-five years, saj-s. "There never has been a newspa per published in this place which could pay journeymen's wages to compositors, to saj" nothing of com pensation for editorial work and other expenses, from its legitimate profits. It may be humiliating to acknowledge it, but there is not a station on the railroad between Tenino and Kalama, where there is not a better prospect for a pay ing list ol subscribers than at the capital of the territory." There have been filed in the office of the auditor of Pierce county, "Washington territory, the articles of incorporation of the North Pacific Mining and Trust company. The incorporators are Senator John P. Jones, of Nevada, Nelson Bennett, a well known railroad contractor, James M. Buckley, assistant general man ager of the western division of the Northern Pacific raihoad, C. D. Laughton, lieutenant govenor of Nevada, R. J. "Weisbach, mayor of Tacoma, and Theodore C. Sears. The capital stock of the company is $1,500,000. The objects of the company are the acquisition of mineral lands, developing of mines, etc., the construction of tramways and their operation. The Vancouver board of trade at a recent special meeting adopt ed a resolution offered by Eugene Semple, instructing the secretary to correspond with boards of trade and municipal authorities of the various cities and towns in the Columbia and "Willamette valleys, with a view to calling at an early date a convention at some central point, to devise waj's and. means and adopt a uniform method for securing the government aid needed in the improvement of the Columbia and Willamette rivers and their tribu taries. Mr. Semple observes that the Columbia river is the only stream which breaks through the great system of the Cascade-Sierra Nevada mountain range for a dis tance of over 1,500 miles, and that it is national in character, and should be considered in the same sense as the lower Mississippi. The San Francisco correspond ent of the Portland Jfctcs writes: "There are thousands of unem ployed laborers in and about the city. As times grow closer along the coast all the men, -who ouo-bt to have staid in the newer towns, flocked to the metropolis. Not being skilled in any given line, they are having a hard time of it, .and the winter promises to be a pretty tough one for many of them. There is the usual, and more than the usual, run of sui cides, and they will probably con tinue. Any sort of rough work and rough living in the country would be better for them than coming to the city. Here most of them are strangers utter ly unknown; beside the employ ment offices have for months, been full of applicants. In general a man can get work if he is really bent on finding it, but some places are so much harder than others, as many miners, railroad shovelers, wood cutters and others have found." NEW TO-DAY.
