Notice To Advertisers. The Astorian guarantees to its ad vertisers the largest circulation of any newspaper published on the Columbia river. This paper is on file at the St. Charles Hotel, Portland, Or. An attempt is to be made in Portland to enforce the Sunday liquor law. The Bonita, on her return from Shagak, Alaska, will bring down 14,000 case3 salmon from that point. There will bo a grand ball at the Ger mania hotel next Saturday night. Tick ets 50 cents, including supper. The Vidctlc's Aberdeen correspondent says the fishermon are catching 17i0 fish daily, and the cannery is running day and night. The ship James Drummond, which has just finished unloading a cargo of rail road iron at Port Moody, B. C., for the Canadian Pacific, has been chartered by Balfour, Guthrie, &, Co., to load wheat at Tacoma. And now it appears that the bill "reg ulating and simplifying proceedings in justices courts" never passed the senate, and is therefore no law, though it was "approved" by the governor and appears on pages 13G, 137 and 133 of the session laws of 1833. The death of the Hon. Henry Warren, says the Oregonian, adds a new factor to the situation as respecting the vacant senatorship. In the case of an extra ses sion there would have to ben special election in Yamhill county, to elect a senator to succeed Mr. Warren. Somo one who had very little to do shot Win. Bock's two fine dogs yester day so badly that they will probably die. The young staghound was a pure bred animal and the other was also a fine beast. They were perfectly harmless to any human being, and how anyone could have the heart to shoot the poor brutes is astonishing. Few can afford the expense of a jour ney to New York to see the Bartholdi statue of Liberty, but at Alex. Campbell's Gem saloon can be seen an exact fac simile of the statue and base, in nickel and bronze, most handsomely gotten np. It is believed to be the only one in the city, was sent from the statue committee in New York, and is a work of art worth SBeing. Vol.1, No. 1, of the Pacific Pharos, Jrablished at Forest Grove, is at hand, t is a rough looking sheet, and wants licking into shape. If the Forest Grove people want a newspaper they ought to rustle and make it possible for the man who is in the newspaper office to get out something creditable. The specimen be fore us is enough to scare any one away from the town in which it is published. Mail advices from the Falkland islands dated July 10th, roports that on April 30th last a shepherd en Beaver island saw a vessel dismasted drifting in toward the land, and that it disappeared near Stuart's bluff. A few days after wreck age was cashed up, including some life buoys marked Yarra Yarra and somo books and other material known to be long to that vessel. Sho was reported ns n total loss some time back while bound from hero to Liverpool. Major Gunn, the dead Olympia jour nalist, was hopelessly in debt. The in ventory of his property does not cover the mortgages thereon. In speaking of this fact the Standard says that no Olympia paper has earned enough money in the last seventeen years to pay the ruling prices for composition, and that were it not for outside resources all of them would have been wrecked. And yet some ono is continually starting and failing with a new publication there. TEItSOXAL. C. IL Cooper leaves for San Francisco on the State on her next trip. ltev. "Vm. Roberts, D. Johnson Found In the Eirtr Near Hanthorn's Cannery. The body of Chris Johnson, a resident of Alderbrook, was found floating in the river near J. O. Hauthorn's cannery yes terday morning. On the 8th he start ed to Gray's river to look after some land in that section, returning on the Union. last Friday. He was last seen alive near Johansen's at upper Astoria, that afternoon. On Monday his contin ued absenca alarmed his friends and a telegram was sent to Vancouver asking if he was there, to which a reply was re ceived saying that a man answering to the description had been there inquiring about laud. This allayed the fears of his family and friends, but yesterday morning at seven o'clock, Messrs. Wel come and Bruen, with R. Johnson, a brother of the missing man, who were at Hanthorn's wharf, saw the drowned body of a man floating in the water be tween the beach and the roadway. They got a boat and brought the body ashore. The brother recognized it as the body of the missing man. Coroner Ross held an inquest, the jury finding that the deceased was a native of Denmark, 33 years of age, and came to his death on or about tho 11th of Septem ber, by accidentally falling into the Co lumbia river from tho roadway at upper Astoria and drowning. Deceased leaves a wife and six children, tho youngest being but three days old. Tho funeral will take place from the Scandinavian church at upper Astoria at ono o'clock this afternoon. MIABLY THIRTY YEARS A0. Delving among the old records in the city hall yesterday afternoon, a dusty volume came to light which proved to bo a record of the proceedings of tho first town council of Astoria iu tho summer of 185G. From its yellow and time stained pages it is learned that the first board of trus tees of the town of Astoria met and or ganized June Gth, 185G. Members of tho board, C. J. Trenchard, Wr. W. Parker, J. W. Welch, Jas. Taylor and Conrad Boelling; C. J. Trenchard elected presi dent, John McClure recorder and David Ingalls treasurer. The first warrant drawn was as fol fel fol eows: "Order No. 575. Treasurer of tho town of Astoria pay David Ingalls or order, the sum of live dollars and seventy-five cents for books and stationery for board of trustees. September C, 185G. C. J. Teenchabd, Pres. Many small merchants have no idea how closely their habits are watched and reported by the commercial agencies. Tho St. Louis Grocer gives tho following as a sample report sent to a jobbing house in answer to an inquiry regarding the standing of a retail dealer who had sent them an order. To anyone familliar with tho reports of such agencies it does not appear much, if, any, everdrawn: Jack Jones, merchant, aged forty eight, one wife and three children two boys and one girl. He lives in a rented house, and is back in Ih'b rent one month. He moves his family about once a year. In his store ho has about 3,000 worth of goods; owes $1,500 on stock; has stand ing out about $1,000; has never failed in business; has allowed notes to go to protest; does not want to be drawn on for an account even if past due; prefers to remit at his convenience. In tho circle in which he moves ho is considered an honorable man. Goes to baso ball twice a week during tho season; attends church regularly in the morning andSportman's Park in the evening; takes an occasional "flyer" in wheat; buys pools on horse races; has a pew in the church; has never been indicted, but in politics be is an offensive partisan, being p mugwump; ran for office at ono time, was beaten and refused to pay his assessment; pays his bills when he has the money to spare. "Who, in taking passage in a great trans-Atlantic steamer, does not feel aa thrill of exultation over her mag nificent power. Against her the Storm King may hurl his elemental forces, nor pierce her amor, nor stop her onward course. But let me describe a scene when, ono morning in mid-ocean, there came an alarm from the pilot house followed by a cry: "The ship's rud der is lor.t!" From the confident ex pression, consternation came to every face. The wheelman being helpless to direct her coun-e, the vessel was at the mercy of wind and wave. Washington, Sept. 15. Some of tho now department officials are rather fresh, and have what the Methodists call a realizing senso of the dignity and im portance of their positions. Tho pro truding self-complacency of a chief of division in the treasury caused a funny scene the other day. In order that he may bo moro easily identified it should ba said that be was appointed during the last days of the Arthur administration, and Secretary Manning's reform has not reached tho room in which ho presides. He was sitting at his desk tho other day contemplating plans for retaining his position, when a tall, venerable man camo into the room, and in a quiet, ro spectful way, observed that he would like to see the documents in such and such a case. "What is your name?" asked the chiof of division. "Strong," was the reply. "What's your first name?" "William," and a queer smile stole over his face. "Where do you reside?" "Washington." "Lawyer?" "I formerly practised law, but have not done so for many years." 'Are you an attorney in thi3 case?" "No. sir." "What do you want to see the papers for, then?" "I have been appointed arbitrator by the courts, and it becomes necessary for me to examine them." "When were you appointed?" 'Nearly a month ago; iTiave been ab sent from the city or should have called for them before." "What'd you say the name was?" "William Strong." At this tho lady stenographer of the presiding genius of the office, who had been writhing about in her chair as if on the ragged edge of hysterics, jumped up and exclaimed: "Mr. , you don't appear to know tho gentleman. This is Justice Strong of tho United States supreme court." Tho justice got leave to look at tho pa pers. A Reliable Article. Practically the local salmon market is in the hands of a few Columbia river packers who hold from 50,000 to 75,000 cases of tho season's pack which consti tutes tho available stock on tho river. Whilo it cannot be said that thero is the inquiry which tho situation should have developed, there is no salmon on tho riv er seeking a market, and holders are firm in their demands for top prices. Tho light pack and active -movement of the present season has been a lesson to tho progressive packers on the river. To a certain extent in future seasons thoy will follow in tho footsteps of tho fruit pack ers of California. It has been demonstrat ed that it is more profitable in a season to pack for a certain market than to con tinue operations at full capacity regard less of stocks and the condition of trade: pnd already the healthful effects of an occasional exhaustive demand is an interesting consideration in dis cussions involving tho present situa tion and tho prospects of the industry. It is almost certain that tny change m tho policy of a few of tho leading can ning companies would be followed event ually through the entire line of Columbia river canneries, but no radical changes could bo expected in a single season. There is a disposition to buy brands. Thero is always an inquiry for certain packs which have found their way into popular favor through judicious manage ment. Certain packers have found in tho experience of years that tho public has learned to grade goods, that a care ful selection of material and neat work manship in packing brings a handsomo return lor tho time and labor involved in conducting a cannery on tho sound busi ness principles which have guided suc cessful men in other industries. Tho public quickly learns of any voluntary effort on its behalf especially in tho im provement of any lino of preserved foods. Tho enterprise of a packer follows his brands through tho world. It cannot bo disputed that thero is always a demand for certain packs of Columbia river salm on. In season and out of season and n all times they have tho call over the me diocre brands which are thrown upon tho market without the endorsement of somo standard canning concern. It is a note worthy consideration that thero has beon something of a general effort to build up a trade for special brands, and that this fact has contributed immeasurably to tho rapid distribution of tho pack of the present season. Such fortuitous changes in general situations should not bo profitless to tho packers. At tho opening of tho present season it was doubtful if capital sufficient could bo enlisted to carry forward a full season's operations, but under present conditions a more favorablo outlook for tho industry could not be desired. Prac tically the pack of 1SS5 has been market ed. Fair prices havo been realized con sidering general industrial and commer cial conditions throughout tho world, and tho opening of another season will find bare markets and depleted stocks where tho trade has relied upon supplies from tho present season's pack with every prospect of a great and general im provement upon tho prices which havo j ruled through tho season. It means that you lake a long pole and a short lino, put a piece of fish on tho hook, and spand the day flinging tho thing wildly over tho water as far as you can reach and drawing it back by iu: numerable slow jorks, The theory is that these impart tion think havo never yet seen a minnow whiz twentv-four feet thronch tho air. and then on diving work his way back to taw by a series of disgraceful wabbles, I concludo that cither tho pickerel has sotno very I peculiar ideas about his finny qpusms or that he is constitutionally fceblo minded, ' for I know ho is sometimes canght by ! this transparent swindle.
