A SERIOUS CHARGE.
Baltimobe, Sept. 14. Frederick L.
Clayton, senior partner in tho ship
brokerage firm of F. L. Clayton &
Co., Alfred Brotherton and George W.
Brown were to-day arrested on a
charge of having conspired to de
fraud insurance companies. Clayton
owned the brig O.T. Stillman, of
which Brotherton was captain and
Brown first mate. Tho brig sailed
from Charleston, S. C, September 2,
lSSi, with a cargo of staves for the
West Indies. On September 24, she
was abandoned at sea, and her crew
were picked up three days later by a
passing schooner. In tho early part
of April, ISSo, tho brig was picked up
nnd towed into Bermuda. Her cargo
was insured for $20,000, and all of
this amount was paid to Clayton, on
tho statement of Capt. Brotherton
that he was compelled to abandon the
brig because of heavy weather and
tho unseaworthiness of tho vessel.
"When the Stillman arrived at Ber
muda she was examined by agents of
tho underwriters, and they found the
vessel iu excellent condition, but with
a number of holea below the water
line, which had evidently been bored
from the inside. The underwriters
at once put the matter into the hands
of a detective, and they pushed it
with all their energy.
Clayton was released on 810,000
I ail, but for the others bail was re
fused. A singular coincidence is the
fact that only this morning informa
tion was received hero the schooner
McDonald, which Brotherton took
command of after the Stillman was
wrecked, had been cast away off
Turk's island, from where she was
bound to Baltimore, and tho 3fvDon
ald was also owned by Clayton. Tho
offense with which Brotherton is
charged is punishablo with death.

the salvation army. Stead's credulity
is universally held as establishing his
utter unfitness to conduct a newspa
per, and decent people havo no sym
pathy for him, because his method of
securing reform flooded London with
gutter literature, and his stooping to
associate with a wretch like Mrs.
Jarrett, who so grossly deceived him,
induces many to question- the man's
sanity. Tho feeling which his trial

bursts of violence against Geneial
Booth's army.

is one that Blaine desires to receive
tho republican nomination for gov
ernor of Maine this fall, and that ho
already has put tho political machine
iu that state in operation to attain
his end. Blaine's principal object in
being a candidato is to keep in the
political field, and to prove he can
carry his own state.
A man in a Michigan village
opened his month so wide when ho
yawned that ho couldn't get his jaws
together again. Ho was taken to a
neighboring town, where a physician,
with the aid of two able-bodied men,
pulled his jaw sockets into their
proper place. He might have been
cured at homo by some one simply
inviting him to take a seat and then
pulling the chair from under him as
he was in the act of sitting down.
There was recently submitted to
the commissioner of Indian affairs a
request from a Kiowa Indian study
ing at Lincoln university, Penu., to
be admitted to citizenship. Ho was
informed in reply that it could be
done only by some act of the general
government. The fact that Indians
are born in tho country does not
make them citizens.

pended on the vote of Ohio this fall,
and knowing that the people of Ohio

the results of the war, sought to re
new the battle fever, so that he might
reap his reward in emoluments and
salary.
