HOW TO TAKE OFF A HIDE.
The hides of farm-slaughtered ani
mals have a poor reputation, because
of the careless way in rhich they aro
stripped. Calt skins and sheep pelts
are reduced one-half in value by be
ing cut and gashed, and improperly
stretched. When a hide is stripped
off it should bo stretched at once and
pegged out to dry, with the flesh side
upward. If it is rolled up, thrown
into a heap and left io dry in that
shape, it is so mean looking that a
buyer will offer only half its real val
ue. A few hints in regard to taking
off a hide may bo useful. The throat
should never be slit crosswise, either
in killing or in taking off a hide. The
skiu is slit from the chin down the
brisket, in a straight line to the tail;
it is then cut around each hoof; the
hind legs are slit behind over the
gambrel, but the front legs aro slit
up in front, over the knee. This
leaves the skin in good shape for fin
ishing the leather. The head and
legs are first carefully skinned, and
all cutting the skiu is avoided. The
skin is then easily drawn off by tak
ing hold of it firmly and pulling it
steadily. It is then spread out even
ly on a floor and salted with fine salt.
If there is but one it is best to stake
it out as soon as the salt has taken,
and dry at once in a cool, shaded
place. If there are more than one
they are laid upon each other and
salted quite freely, and afterwards
they are thoroughly dried. If the
skins aro to be kept on hand they
should be closely watched for moths
or grub3. American Ayrmilturist.
A Manitoban farmer Tvas sharpen
ing a stake Tvitli an axe, when a flash
of. lightning, accompanied by a single
clap of thunder, came from tho only
cloud visible a small one immediately
overhead. Tho bolt struck tho head
of the axe, splitting it into two xiieces
and breaking the handle. The
fanner was knocked to tho ground
insensible, but speedily recovered,
and upon searching about found the
fragments of his axe forced deeply
into the ground.
It was a neat trick to send the
Hartford to sea iu such a condition
that sho will surely have to be laid
up for repairs in some foreign ship
yard. There are people uncharitable
enough to assert that tho object is to
keep down expenses at Maro Island
navy yard, so as to make a fine show
ing for the new administration. If
no work is done at any of our navy
yards, what is tho use of maintaining
them?
Ten years ago the load for an or
dinary freight car was fixed at about
20,000 pounds. In ISSi the load car
ried had advanced to iU.UU'J pounds,
and now cars are being put on which
will tako 00,000 pounds with ease. In
tho meautimo tho weight of the car
has increased very littlo. Tho use of
steel rails is said to be tho principal
agent in bringing about this change.
It is a curious fact that wasps' nests
often tako fire, as is supposed, by the
chemical action of the wax upon tho
material of which tho nest is com
posee. Many of the fires of unknown
origin in haystacks and farm build
ings may bo thus accounted for.
