ASTORIA. OREGON:
SATURDAY SEITUMKEU 12. 18S3
Postage stamps Lave been in uso
iu this country bnl thirty-eight years.
Prior to 18A7 postage was collected in
money, and its prepayment ras op
tional. So many ot the boys sent to West
Point prove tinablo to pass the ex
amination for admission that about
fifty congressional districts are un
represented. Two races of men are dying out
the Laplanders, who number 30,000.
and the Maoris of New Zealand, re
duced from 100,000 to 43,000 since the
days of Capt. Cook, and likely to be
extinct by tho year 2000.
Judge Field, of the supreme court
of the United Stares, relates in his
momoirs, just published that in 18C2
there occurred a mysterious epidem
ic, the origin and nature of which
have never been explained. A mere
touch with the end of the finger was
sufficient to convey tho infection.
Of the 5,000 patent medicines of
American concoction now in the mar
ket, GOO kinds are thought by the
Uoston Globe to be of real value.
The trade amounts to S22,000,0C0 a
year. Of this 10,000,000 is expended
for advertising. Tho proprietors di
vide tho profits of 3,000,000 annual
return.
PoktiiVXd journals justly complain
of the glaring defects in the public
school system of that city. It would
seem that more attention to the com
mon school part of the programme,
the essentials, and less ornamental
frills and flub-dubs would better suit
ihe people that pay the taxes to keep
the tiling going. And they are right
A south ei:x contemporary doesn't
liko tho president's leisurely way of
distributing the spoils among the
victors, but it lakes no stock iu anj'
proposition to rebel against the ad
ministration. ''"Where there is so
much hunger and thirst,' it remarks
with bitter caution, "it would be
foolish to quarrel with the only pan
try in sight"
A Milton, Msiss., merchant, lately
deceased, found out one da' that his
till had been robbed. lie held his
tongue, however, and waited until
Time's whirligig tossed the culprit at
his feet. This is how the culprit
came: Three months afterward one
of his customers said to him: ''Did
you ever find out who look that mon
ey out of your till? The merchant
replied: 4,I never have until now,
but now I know it was you. as I have
never told anyone that I lo3t if
The man was compelled to pay back
the money.
A busiieIi of grain, whea compact
ed into lard, or cheese, or butter, can
find its market any where in tho
world where the cost of sending the
grain itself would mako a market for
it impossible. Besides, this in the
making of the lard or butter, a ma
nurial residue is left on the laud in
stead of being carried away to fertil
ize foreign fields. This is the kernel
of the argument for mixed farming
instead of grain farming.
TnE results of a series of observa
tions carried out by the hydrographiq
bureau at Washington, iu order to
determine the length, depth and du
ration of ocean wavcs, havc been pub
lished. The largest wave observed is
said to have had a length ot half a
mile and to have spent itself in twenty-three
seconds. During storms on
tho Atlantic waves sometimes extend
GOO feet and last from ten to eleven
seconds. Tho most careful measure
ments of tho heights of waves givo
from forty-four to forty-eight feet a3
an extreme limit
Doddkidge reckoned the difference
between rising at five and seven
o'clock for forty years as equivalent
to adding ten years to ono's life. It
is a hint by which many might
profit, yet it is a dangerous kind ot
teaching; for in our nerve-exhausting
age there are multitudes whoso lives
will bo seriously shortened, and their
working power lessened, if they do
not take all the sleep they can hold.
A brain-worker recently remarked,
"When I havo had plenty ot sleep
and a leisurely breakfast, I can do
more in n few minutes than at other
times in five hours."
One hundred and fifty million
tons of matter in solution are nn
nuaUy ponred into the Gulf of Mexi
co by the Mississippi. At this rale
one foot of land over the whole basin
would be removed in 4,000 years.
Similar calculations applied to the
St Lawrence, the La Plata and the
Amazon reach the result that 100
tons per milo is removed from tho
entire American continent every year.
Ono cubic mile of earth is deposited
every year in the Atlantic ocean from
America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
And so the continents waste away
and form material for new ones in the
geological ages.
m -
Some time since a vessel arrived in
New York having on board as vil
lainous a looking lot of gypsies as
ever robbed a hen-roost They wero
accompanied by a menagerie of mon
keys and bears, and gave so poor an
account of themselves that tho au
thorities very properly refused to
allow them to land. It now trans
pires that they have played tho Chi
nese game on tho United States offi
cials by going to Quebec and coming
down across the borders of Vermont.
It would seem that the veriest vaga
bonds on earth can laugh at any re
striction acts which congress has so
far been able to impose.
I. - !. I.
In view of tho fact that this was to
be above everything else a "business'
administration, the confession of act
ing secretary of the treasury, Fair
child, that he casually gave assent
last May to an expenditure consider
ably in excess of tho appropriation
in the case is curious and suggestive,
not to say comical. It was done he
explains, in the course of attaching
his name to tho routine documents of
the department; but it will be apt to
strike the country that an officor who
is in tho habit of putting his name to
papers authorizing expenditures of
money without reading them has a
queer idea of business methods aud
responsibilities.
It is hardly worth while to point
out the inconsistencies of the third
party prohibitionists; but ono thing
may be cited as a specially giddy fea
ture ot their philosophy. They claim
that the cause of temperance de
mauds a political parly devoted ex
clusively to the task of fighting the
liquor power, and yet whenever they
hold conventions and make platforms
they take up all other issues in sight
as well as that of prohibition, regard
less of all sense of fitness. If it be
really true, as they assert, that tho
success of the temperance reform de
pends upon the development of a new
parly, why do they not confine such
party strictly to the work for which
it is organized, aud which is its only
logical claim to favor.
