The ship Blue Jacket gave $12,000
bonds in the libel case filed against her
and went to sea from Seattle last Satur
day. She belongs to the Black Diamond
coal company.
The corner stone of the new Episcopal
church in this city will be laid next Sat
turday afternoon at four o'clock, Hight
Kovefend John A. Paddock, bishop of
"Washington territory, officiating.
The ocean steamer Bonita has been en
gaged by the Arctio Packing company to
proceed from San Francisco to Now
Shagak for the men and material of the
cannery near which the bark Montana
was lost. She sails to-morrow and will
put in here on her way up.
Before Justice Goodell a jury cas9 was
tried yesterday evening wherein Chas.
"Wikkala sued the Wsahington Packing
Co. for $CG alleged to bo due him for fish
delivered last season. The jury brought
in a sealed verdict. The matter will
probably be compromised.
Loud thunder that roared above the
city and finally died away in hoarse mut
terings on the eastern hills; sudden dash
es of rain; vivid lightning and gusts of
wind; whito caps on the water; all this at
six o'clock yesterday merning: then
brilliant sunshino and a fine day.
Capt. Carroll and purser Downing of
the Idaho are reported to have a good
thing up in Alaska in the shapo of a fine
gold mine, alongside the famous Tread
well mine on Douglas island, from which
$ 150,000 was taken last July. There are
live of them, and it is said they have

hundred thousand a piece isn't bad these
times.
Captain Timothy, of tho British ship
Nortnbrook, has been presented by the
insurance companies with 200 guineas,
and a like amount has been given to the
first and second mates, carpenter, boat
swain and two apprentices, for meritor
ious conduct in getting tho ship to Liver
pool from San Franoisco after receiving
severe damage to the spars when only a
few days out from there.
Beasley & Hildreth are raising and
moving a house on Astor street, by the
Presbyterian church, and yesterday
found the bones of an adult, apparently
an Indian, about twenty inches below
tho surface. The skull was the only part
of the skeleton that hadn't crumbled;
great roots of trees chopped down on
that site over twenty years ago indicated
that the sepulture must have taken placo
about the same year the Columbia bar
was frozen over.

A TKBBIBLE ACCIDENT.
Drowning of two Jlen in the Mrcani Opposite
the City.
Word came from Knappton yesterday
of a dreadful accident that occurred last
Tuesday night, resulting in the drown
ing of two men and tho serious injury of
a third. The particulars are very meagro
and the most diligent inquiry yesterday
failed to secure any more than tho mer
est outlines of tho occurrence.
It appears that at eight o'clock last
Tuesday evening three men left this cit3
in a fishing boat belonging to n man
named Fitzpatrick living at Skamokwa,
intending to go to that place. When
about half way across the river and about
opposite Knappton one of the men who
was in the bow of the boat suddenly
lurched forward and fell overboard. One
of his companions who wa3 in the stern
steering made a jump to save his com
rade and he too fell overboard. At that
moment the boom of the sail came round
with such force as to partly overturn the
bo?t, the sail fouled and struck the water,
the boat capsizing and throwing the re
maining manlout. About ten o'clock ho
drifted ashore about a mile and a half be
low Knappton where bo found assistance
and was cared fer: ho was unconscious
when picked up, and dreadfully bruised.
Not till yesterday morning was ho able
to give any account of the affair and ov
en then was too exhausted to moro than
give the faintest outlines of tho terrible
fate that befell his unfortunate compan
ions. To add to the difficulty of getting
any information about tho matter it ap
pears that the man who was saved was u
stranger to tho other two men and was
simply a passenger. Parties on tho
Novelty heard that a man known as "Bos
ton Bill" was one of the men drowned.
The other man is described as being of
medium hight, dressed in black, carry
ing a gold watch. Tho name of the man
who got ashore is said to bo Frank Ham
lin. The boat, battered and stovo in.

where the man had drifted tho night be
fore. Further and more authentic par
ticulars are awaited with anxious inter

street; the petition was granted and the

transfer his liquor license from one
building to another. T. H. Craug was
granted permission to grade Main street
in front of lot 5, block 9G.
The committee on streets reported
recommending that street lamps bo
erected on Cedar street at crossing of
West Fourth, and on Hemlock at cross
ing of East Fifth; report adopted.

An Accident Defers the Race.
Sakdx Hook, Sept. 8. Tho Puritan
and Gcnesta proceeded from tho anchor
age to tho starting point at 10:30 o'clock
this morning. Tho wind is increasing
from tho lighthouse. At 11:30 o'clock
the signal was given to the yachts to get
ready, and ten minutes later as tho racers
rounded up to cross tho iino the Gcnesta
was seen to lose her bowsprit. Sho im
mediately came about as did tho Puritan
when a large hole was discovered in the
latter's mainsail. Efforts were mado to
rig up a bowsprit, but without avail, and
at 12:40 the judges' boat took the Gencsta
in tow and returned home. "When the
accident happened the yachts were ready

with her husband left Astoria for Lew
iston, Idaho, on the 8th lust, their fu
ture home, where he is engaged in mer
cantile business. Tho lady was a res
ident of Astoria for many years, and
enjoyed an enviable reputation for so
cial virtues, energy of character and
business capacity. Though we have
lost ono of our most estimable ladies,
we congratulate our sister Territory in
having another gem added to her diadem.

Tho Hon. John Kelly, tho head and
front of Tammany Hall, a man of
strict integrity, an indefatigable
worker, early at his office, late to
leave, so burdened with business that
regular meals were seldom knownby
him, with mind in constant tension
and energies steadily trained, finally
broke down !
The wonder is that he did not sooner
give way. An honest man in all
things else, he acted unfairly with his
physical resources. He was ever
drawing upon this bank without ever
depositing a collateral. The account
overdrawn, the bank suspends, and
both are now in the hands of medical

ITTttID SALMON.
The London Grocer, under the above
heading reports two remarkablo cases re
cently prosecuted under tho "Sales of
Food Act" by tho polico authorities of
the great metropolis. In the first caso tho
offending parly was a peddler who admit
ted on tho witness stand that he had
found some fish in a wasto bin, and sub
sequently sold them for fresh salmon.
The story was hardly credited by tho
magistrate, but tho testimony of witness
established tho truth of tho astounding
statment. It was developed on tho trial
that the fish wero found to be bad, and
woro thrown into a waste bin in tho fish
stall by a salesman. Soon after, the peddler
arrived, and, with tho consent of the
salesman, carried tho fish away, and
they wero offered for sale at four pence
per pound. Tho peddler was fined 5,
with tho alternative of a months impris
onment with bard labor. It would seem
that the salesman had n guilty know
ledge of tho intention of the peddler, and
he fchould hare been punished with him,
aud with equal severity.
Tho second caso brought out a story of
possibly a moro astonishing character
than that told by the peddler. The de
fendant was a general dealer. Ho was
arrested for offering for salo three hun
dred cans of salinoa unfit for human
consumption. Tho defendant testified
that when he bought tho goods the seller
had opened seven or eight cans for him,
and they were all sound. Ho had never
bought goods in that way before. In an
American court of justice, under such an
act as the ''Sales of Food Act," the deal
er's testimony would have put tho brok
er or jobber from whom he purchased,
on his defense if ho had been lucky
enough to escape arrest at tho timo tho
offienso was charged against the dealer.
Notwithstanding tho dealer's plea of ig
norance he was found guilty as charged,
and in its review of the testimony, the
court dwelt with great severity upon tho
personal responsibility of tho" dealer for
tho character of goods ho offers for sale.
Tho conduct of the defendant was de
scribed as infamous in selling these cans
of food, when they were not ht for con
sumption, "as they wero all in a fright
fully putrid state.'
The defendant was sentenced to two
months' imprisonment with hard labor,
without tho option of a fine. It would
bo interesting to learn where the canned
salmon was packed and what labels wore
upon the cans.
New IoUl Cards.
The new postal cards aro now in circu
lation. They aro prinsed on harder ma
terial than some of those formerly in
use, and are easy to write on. They aro
handsome in appearance, tho printed
matter being of a light brown color.
Tha warning on the face, which has had
various phraseology, as "Put nothing on
this pide but the address," and "Nothing
but the address can bo placed on this
side," becomes in tho new card, "Noth
ing but tho address to be on this side."
The words "United States" appear on n
scroll, and under them the words "Postal
card," and a row of thirteen stars is be
tween tho two lines. A youthful head of
Jefferson appears on tho stamp, partly
surrounded by a wreath. There is moro
ornamentation than on those formerly
in use.

A CLEVER SWINDLER.
Hon Tom Davis Managed to Rob Ills Cus
tomer. New Yobk, Sept. S. Beferring to tho
trade in "counterfeit" money pursued by
Tom Davis, tho murdered 6port, report
says: A man named Mapes, of Easton,
Pa., answered one of Davis' circulars.
He brought with him $5,000 in good
money. Davis met him at Chatham
square and led him to a saloon near tho
Bowery. They entered and sawn con
federate named Butler sitting at a beer
table. Davis called for beer, and while
ho whispered to Mapos, looked suspicious
ly at Butler. "Gentlemen," the latter
said, "I fear that I disturb jou," and
left the table. Before he did so he de
posited on a shelf underneath, where
beer glasses are sometimes held, a well
filled envelope, bound with red string.
Davis took from an inside pocket an en
velope exactly similar, and counted out
$20 0 worth of genuine money in hundred-dollar
bills. Mapes examined them
and said they wero worth $5,000. As
soon as he said this Davis, in an absent
minded way, called for somo beer. Tho
waiter was hnrrying to the table, and
Davis glanced at him suspiciously,
quickly picked up the money, bound the
envelopo with a red string, and dropped
the parcel in his lap, at the samo time
winking at Mopes. Tho verdant believed
that he understood, for as soon as tho
waiter was gone, an envelope tied with a
red string, was handed to him, and he
gave Tom Davis $5,000. Both the men
arose and walked out, and the crook But
ler walked up to tho table, picked up the
$20,000 envelopo and had a drink. Mapes
had gone off with a bundlo of blak
papers.
As a "sawdust" man Davi3 had no
equal, and as a bunko-steerer not oven
the absent "Hungry Joe" was as adopt
as he. About a year ago Davis opened
an offico at 2GI Broadway for the sole
purpose of bunko-steering. An officer
in the society for tho suppression
of vice said that bunko-steering,
not proving as remunerative as was ex
pected, tho offico was turned into a panel
house. "Ono of Davis' victims," said tho
officer, "was a westerner. Ho wanted to
buy $5,0G0 worth of goods, and said to
Davis in tho effice: 'I want you
to act on tho square, or I'll mako
you.' Davis Baid: 'You aro armed?'
'I am' tho visitor said, and showed
two Bowio knives in his boots and
a brace of revolvers under his coat. Davis
told him that if he was found with weap
ons on him ho would bo arrested and ev
erything would fail. The westerner there
fore, surrendered the arms, on condition
that they be packed in tho valiso with
his money. Davis consented and tho
bargain was comploted. Tho panel slid
open, and tho heavily guarded westerner
went homo minus his money and woap
ons. Indeed, it is said that ono of the
crooks who went down to seo him safely
aboard tho train stole his gold watch and
chain."
FOREIGN SALMON MARKETS.
"The Loudon and Liverpool slocks of
canned salmon have been largely ofer
e3timated," said a gentlemam who has
just returned from England, whoso ex
tensive dealings in canned goods qualify
him to speak authoritatively of the
world's stocks. "I am not prepared to
give figures, but tho idea that thero is a
stook sufficient for two years' ordinary
demands is absurd. Tho markets are in
better condition to-day than they havo
been for months. Stocks are cleaning
up, and in salmon tho market has a much
improved tone. During tho season just
ended the standard packs navo bad n
creat deal to contend against. Fresh
salmon has sold at six pence per pound,
and other foods nave been relatively as
cheap. Inferior goods and cheap canned
meaU there having been a largo impor
tation cf the latter havo also retarded
the salo of salmon. There is always a
demand for a first-class article. In all
the English markets canned goods are
sold on their merits; tho poor stuff never
pays tho shipper, but for a time inter
feres with tho movement of standard
packs. Just now tho demand is falling
off there. Grocers aro receiving their
dried fruits and holiday stocks, and next
month canned goods will bo forced into
tho background, but by tho first of next
year trado will be resumed again, and
dealers anticipate a very firm market.
"Tho stock in tho United Kingdom is
much lighter than has been estimated.
The consumption has been estimated at
a thousand aises a dav. Thero is always
a stock of at least 100,000 cases, without
which tho markets would bo regarded as
practically bare. Beforo any of the pres
ent season's pack reaches the markets,
stocks will havo been reduced to a com
paratively small excess of the reserve
stock, for everything indicates an active
demand at tho opening of next year, and
tho present situation promises a general
improvement on prices."
