Cz) fo gnitij gMtoraw, ASTORIA. OREGON: THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 10. 1S35 "HARD TIMES'' INDEED. We iu Astoria and Clatsop county and Oregon and the northwest don't know what "hard times' are. True, the general depression of business bears upon us in common with all the inhabitants of the world, but for tunately for ourselves the utmost limit to the "hard times" suffered by us on the Pacific coast is enforced! economy, plainness of living and deprivation of accustomed luxuries. "Where a man formerly smoked two bit cigars he has now to be content with plain bit ones ; where a woman previously kept two servants she must now content herself with one or do her own housework; old clothes are renovated, the intended new pi ano is not bought; there are less of delicacies on the table and little leaks in the domestic purse are stepped: ten-cent pieces and even nickels are not despised; a dollar looks bigger and buys more than it did three years ago; not what we want but wjjat we need is purchased. These consti tute a good deal of the little domes tic conditions that make up a large part of the "hard times' that one hears so much of on every hand. But in the crowded east how dffer ent and sad the story! There, whore human life is the cheapest and plen tiest commodity in the marliet, the keen competition, the struggle for existence has occasioned conditions of whose existence we dwellers on this coast can form but slight con ception. Fancy living where a dollar a day is considered "good wages,'' aud where a man with a family can get but ten or fifteen days' work in a month and take his pay in "due bills" good only for supplies to bo bought at a store owned by the man or cor poration that employs him. To that poor worker times are "hard"' indeed. Multiplied causes make up the con dition that reduces American labor to worse than Mexican peonage. Take the great state of Pennsylvania for example. Iron, zinc, granite, slate, and coal have tempted thousands vast armies into the broad domain of Penn's state. Nature has done ev erything to make her one of the rich est states in tho country. Almost everything necessary for the perfect making of tho king of metals is at hand. Tho ore and the fuel are there. The anthracite coal regions are iu the possession of great corporations. During tho Molly Maguire troubles these great corporations determined that they should never again bo troubled by strikes, and to-day the whole region is so crowded with la borers that, notwithstanding the enormous output, not more than a third of the miners are employed at a time. Most of them have work, but tho work amounts to very little for each man, and from ten to fifteen days a month is about what the men have. Therefore, tho income of tho laborers is very small. A miner who receives nominally .$2 a day makes really not more than 1, and an in side laborer who is paid at tho rale of $1.50, makes seventy-five cents a day. Tho companies filled the region with labor by importation. A man's wages range from $11 to $33 a month. The best paid coal miners about $35. The prevailing rate of wages in the iron mines is seventy cents a day. Tho amount of money which each in dividual has for food and clothing, medicine, aud all necessaries count ing three adults to a family, a man, his wife and two children, ran ires from ten cents to thirty-four cents a day. A miner has work from ten to twenty days in tho iron aud anthra cite regions, and it is the half or two thirds time which makes the rate of wages meaningless. Rents are high. A man whose monthly income is $10 pays $i for rent, and in some places rents run up to $15 and $30. Five dollars a month is tho amount charged generally by tho companies for the tenements which they own. These people, living thus in dwell ings without a single attractive fea ture, eat scauty and unwholesome food. Ten cents a day will not com mand much in the way of meat, and tho men d not have much besides the cheapest kind of vegetables. Tho ordinary dinner in a miner's hut con sists of potatoes and cabbage. A thrifty man will keep a pig, and if he can get a piece of ground, will raise potatoes and cabbages, lie is sure then, through the winter, of a barrel of pork and another of sourkrout. But the great majority of miners have to buy their food, and it is very expensive, especially where the com pany store is maintained. Many families are starving, aud the chil dren of miners may be seen every evening at six o'clock at tho bridges in Pittsburg bogging of the workmen coming from the iron and steel works for the scraps left in their dinner- cans. One of the causes ot the ter rible distress and the pitiful poverty of the mining regions of Pennsyl vania is the importation of foreign labor. Poles, Hungarians, and Bul garians swarm through the coal mines. Tho Poles sometimes make good citizens, and so do tho Hun garians. Tho Bulgarians arc a wretched lot They come in great numbers and will work for almost nothing. They rarely become skilled miners, but are content to remain laborers. They spend nothing. A dollar a week is a good income for one of them. Fifty or sixty of them will live in a single shanty, sleeping on the floor and eating the refuse of slaughter houses. With their bread they use lard instead of butter. When a Bulgarian has sent home $300 he quits the country. He has acquired an ample fortune. Happiness is but a condition of relative terms. Were one of these men to bo put in tho place of the poorest man on this coast he would consider himself very well off. New York Democrats who don't like the World have determined to resurrect tho Star and run it That paper cost John Kelly $300,000. Ho has a mortgage on it now for $90,000. Mr, Dorsheimer will bo the editor and the Star will twinkle on tho 1st of next month. The appearance of cholera at Na gasaki, Japan, suggests the probabil ity of that dreadful plague reaching Oregon. Cleanliness, temperance, a quiet mind, aro the best preventa tives. A very strict watch on inward bound vessels would also be iu order. -HARRIED. On Tuesday evening. Sept 8th, istt, by the "lev.
