W k gutty storfu. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 18S5 Jim Brows, of Covington, Ky., wanted his neighbors to remember bim when bo was gone, bo two years before bis death be planted sis acres of Canada thistles. Stead, the editor of the Pall Jlall Gazette, is on trial in Loudon for ab duction. The titled roues whose beastly practices he exposed will uevor forgive him for his action. President Cleveland returned to the "White house from his trouting trip in the Adirondacks yesterday, fully.restored to health and will re new his tussle with the politicians to day. The London Grocer says the opin ion is expressed that in the coming year the price for prime brands of Columbia river fish is not unlikely to creep up to 24s per case; if so, the days of low rates and undesirable qualities are clearly numbered. Two years ago the last spike of the N. P. K. B. was driven; Portland cele brated, champagne flowed, banners waved, and all was gay. Mr. Hilgard was the center figure and the New York bears made a raid on the Ore gon stocks. It doesn't seem so long ago. Our European friends are always able to afford us Americans a news item. Last spring everyone thought that England and Bnssia would sure ly fight, and now that the growls of the lion and the bear aro dying awa', Germany and Spain arc quarreling about some worthless islands in the Pacific. Spain "discovered" them 300 years ago aud never thought enough of them to colonize them; but when Germany took possession of one of the rocks the excitable Spaniards felt that their "honor" was touched. It is not at all probable that it will be a war of anything but words; should it come to blows Ger many would whip the Spaniards quicker aud worse than she did the French. Alfonso, the Spanish king, seems to be in an unfortunate predic ament; if ho fights ho will bo whipped, aud if he doesn't fight his own people will dethrone him. It is with regret not unmixed with apprehonsion that all good men will view the unpleasant relations existing between the progressive Democratic editor of the Standard and the retro gressive editor of the Mountain Sentinel. Of the latter the former says he is "part of a bad element." and that "he will blight any newspa per he is connected with.'" Of the former the latter says that he had been a Bepublicau till Blaine's nom ination sent him "forward to the Democratic mourners' bench.'' 'Tis sad to uoto two stately barks that sailed the stormy seas clash in col lision when the sun of success shines on the rippling wave of party harmo ny. Perhaps, however, the editor of tho Mountain Sentinel is of that class who would rather reign in hell than serve in heaven. C. E. FaiiKner is the name of the accomplished gentleman and scholar recently appointed chief of the rec ord division in the pension office at Washington. Ho has fifty clerks under him. Tho Indianapolis Times published a letter regarding the man ner of Mr. Falkuer's appointment. The editor of the Times is in receipt of the following, which he prints pre cisely as it was written: "Washington D C August 20 18S5 Mr "William Holaway Editor of the times Sir will you Please send mo a copey of the times that has Jap turpy Letter in a Bout my apointe in the Pension office it was one day this weeak Yours Eespectfulley C K FatjiiKNek I have hearde that he Eoto ono But I Couldont git the Date of the Paper. CEP None can doubt Mr. P.'s honesty or courage. The simple fact that he is a federal appointee is sufficient ev idence as to that; but in all humility Tiie Astorian regrets that Mr. P. ap pears to consider spelling to be pure ly a matter of private judgment The Col. Grocer aud Canner has been interviewing "a veteran packer'' who, talking about canned salmon, says: ""We are steadily approaching the time when the demand for actual consumption, not alone on this coast and east, but in Europe as well, will show tho depletion of the world's salmon stock. Never since packing on this coast has been dignified by classification among the recognized industrios, have stocks run so low. Three months time will show tho scarcity in this city and throughout the coast. In less than six months canned salmon will bo in strong de mand east, and before next packing season is over, London and Liver jpool markets will be cleaned up clos- er than ever before. It is not to be said that there will be a demand which can not possibly be supplied, there may not even be a strong de mand, but the market will get the strength which should naturally fol low such a condition of affairs, and a revival of trade in this line of canned goods, will create an improved feel ing in packing interests generally. We know that we are short on the coast supply, and it is said that En glish markets have a much improved tone. It is my opinion that the com bination of circumstances against which packers have complained dur ing the 3ear will ultimately result in the greatest good which has fallen to the industry in a number of seasons."
