WORK OF A DASTARD MOB.

night a large body of masked men
passed down Gay street, in the direc
tion of the jail. They were joiued at
various points along the street by at
least two hundred citizens. They ap
proached the jail in perfect order, ex
cepting the liriug of pistols. The
jailor surrendered the keys to the
main entrance, and the crowd broke
ihedoorof the cell containing Lee
Sellers, a young man charged with
the murder and robbery of Edgar
Maine, committed on !ast Tuesday
'morning, one mile east of tho city.

slashes. Both doors were soon bat
tered down, and the masked vigi
lantes shot at Sellers twice, without
inflicting any hcrious wounds. Then
seizing Sellers, the mob passed out
of the jail yard and went to the mid
dle of a high bridge over the Tcnnes
?ee river. A rone was placed around
the criminal's neck while ho was yet
ia the corridor of tho jail. He stood
with his anus folded, and never
tlinehed while the knot was being ar
ranged. He called for a drink of
water before leaving for the bridge

After reaching the middlb of the
bridge the mob halted and demanded
a confession. Sellers refused to say
:i worJ, and the rope was placed over
a eTos.-bi':irc, about twenty-two feet
:.b.ive the lloor, and he was swung
off. lie was not handcuffed, aud as
soon as the noose began to tighten
he climbed up tho rope hand over
hand, and gained the top of tho
bridge framing. He then crawled
along the crossbeams to one side of
the bridge. While ho was crossing
at least thirty shots were fired at
him, but not one of them with fatal
effect. He rose to his feet and yelled
at the top of his veice:
"My friends, come to me! I'm mur
dered! Come quick!"
The wounded man then lay down
on the steps, aud several shots were
fired at him. but none of them hit
him in a vital part. Runners were
sent lo the city for Ladders and an
other rope. Theciowdwas orderly,
and but few people outside of those
implicated knew auything about the
affair. Some voting men who were at
a ball left their dancing, and followed
the masked men in their dress coats.
After the ladders were brought two
men climbed up to the top of the
stringers to re adjust the rope. Sell
ers had then taken the rope from
around his neck, and lagged the
crowd to kill him and end his suffer-

London, Sept. G. Telegrams from
a gentleman who was recently sent to
Germany to inquire into the alleged
wholesale expulsion of Russian sub
jects fully confirm all previous re
ports. In a dispatch dated at Kon
igsburg he says: Many thousand
persons have been expelled from
towns in the eastern provinces, and
thousands of Russians havo been or
dered to leave by the 1st of October,
on the ground that they have not ob
tained formal naturalization, al
though many of those expelled per
formed German military service at
Danzig. The chief sufferers are mer
chants, artisans, workmen, and even
musicians, some of whom have been
settled in the country twenty years.
At least Mi) persons in Danzig at
present are under notice to depnrt.
At Konigsbnrg the same harsh state
of affairs exists, and the sufferings
likely to be caused by the forced re
moval of so many peple from the
comfortable homes which they havo,
by their industry, succeeded in mak
ing for themselves, excites the keen
est sympathy of the natives in these
cities, who are indignant at the pros
pective loss of so many wealthy
producers. The municipal council
of Danzig ha3 sent a petition to Bis
marck, setting forth in forcible terms
the injustice and injury which will
result from the enforcement of the
order of removal, and requesting that
it be rescinded. Tho sufforers them
selves havo thus far appealed in vain
to the provincial authorities for
amelioration of tho decree.
In your paper of the 2Gth instant
(writes a correspondent of the St
Louis Rejmbliuin) is a picture of tho
statue "Star of the West" a woman
shading her eyes with her hand. It is
not true to nature. A woman always
shades her eyes by turning her hand
over the palm upward 83 that the
back will not sunburn. During tho
civil war a woman in the army in
malo attire was discovered by this
gesture.
An exchange truthfully says: "It is
worth remembering that no newspa
per is printed especially for any one
person, any moro than a hotel is built
especially to please one guest. Peoplo
wbo become greatly displeased with
something they find in a newspaper
should remember that the very thing
that displeases them is exactly tho
thing that will please somebody who
has just as much interest in the paper
as they have.''

OREGON AND WASHINGTON CATTLE
IN ENGLAND.
Recent shipments of eastern Wash
ington and Oregon cattle to England
havo awakened considerable interest,
particularly among trade competitors.
These cattle, it appears, were driven
eastward and nnally shipped on board
vessels at Duluth. A British trade
paper, in commenting upon this ship
ment, states that the dead-meat has
proved a failure to all intents and
purposes. Not only does tho meat
uose in quauty, but the weight shrinks
by more than b per cent The live-
cattle trade, however, it regards as a
far more serious matter. That Wy
oming territory alone sends from its
borders nearly enough meat to satis
fy the requirements of London,
and now that the northern systems of
railways is finished, transit is com
paratively an easy thing. Three
year-old bullocks, weighing 1,000
pounds each, can be bought at rail
road points in Montana and Dakota
for Sd.40 per head. Transportation
from Montana to London adds S22.S0
to this figure, and at these rates "it
will bo found that in this trade of
supplying London with cattle from
tho great prairies of the northwest
there is an enormous and profitable
field for enterprise." The lowfignre'is
arrived at by direct shipments, with
out the intervention of brokers, while
cattle which are taken from some
other sources of supply pass through
half a dozen hands before they reach

F. J. Horswill describes tho Conner
coalmines on the south side of the
Skagit as superior to all coal mined
on this coast. Ho cites the Scotch
expert, P. N. McKay, as sharing this
high opinion of its value. Thero are
five veins of coal, the better quality
being found in the lower vein, an
eighty-foot one. Tho pitch is 50 deg.
to the southeast. A cross-cut tunnel
has been put in 171 feet long.
Ward C. Whito, tho most successful
dairyman in Wisconsin, uttered that
