Stearns & Co., of Forty-second street, New York, is only one of a numerons progeny. The girls could earn on an averago & a week, out of which fines had to be paid. These fines ranged all the way from twenty-five cents to a week's wages. They were imposed for every conceivable thing if a girl was seen with a paper on herloom,if she washed her hands, if sho ate a piece of bread (butter is a luxury), if she spoke to her neighbor, if she came in a few minutes late (althongh they are piece workers), and for a hundred other things. A foreman had beenemployed who was said to be too easywith the girls, because he was not a ruffian, al though under his regime hundreds of dollars a year were paid as fines into the firm's treasury. A new foreman was engaged who came tip to the saintly Stearns' idea of a disciplina rian, and he was keeping a book ot mitdeeds. The girls were scared; and they struck before he had a chance to imrjose the fines. He thought to in timidate them by coarse language bnt the good btearns would not believe that he would use such language. Stearns, himself, when asked whether ho thought S3 a week was enough for a girl to live on, said thoy could livo on S2 a week, if a number of them hired a room and clubbed together lived as the Chinese or Italians do in the Sixth ward, a dozen or more in one room. He also stated that ho did not keep tho fines, but expended them in "charity." He helps to snpnort, it 13 said, the Cremorno Mission in Thirty-third street intended to re form fallen women. ''Better," said a Unionist, "pay living wages and pre vent womon from falling." The entire story is sickening, wero it- not that it is only one of a class. It is needless to state that silk manufacturing is a highly protected industry- The Northorn Pacific stock records show that tho shipments of young stock cattle into Montana for the sea son amounted to 72,000 head. Half the cattle went into tho territory from the cast, and tho other half from "Washington territory. There wero also 4,000 head of horses and 2,400 head of sheep shipped into Montana from the west end of the Northern Pacific line. It is considered so unlucky in Flor ida to bo tho first person bnried in a cemetery that the friends of the de ceased person whoso body was des tined to meet that fato averted it by burying a log of wood in advanco of his interment. In the other states of tho Union it is considercd'unlucky to be buried at any time. Bis Lo3ft ras Ber Cain. "Well madam' said a fashionable physician to a wealthy lady patient, uif you don't like my prescriptions, per haps yon had bettor try Parker's Ton ic, or some other quack stuff." 4You don't mean it Doctor," she answered, "but your advice may be good for all that. Sometimes what yon call 'quack stuff' is the best and most sci entific medicine, after all." She got a bottlo of Parker's Tonic and it cured her of neuralgia arising from a disordered stomach ond nerves. She told her friends and now they all keep a doctor at home in the form of Park er's Tonic. A Nevada court held that a man who has S3 in his pockot and his board paid for a week ahead is "a capitalist" within the meaning of the law. The Clangor of an Alarm Bell Close bj, in the stillness of the night, rould scarcely startle the ordinal individual mote than do trilling noises the nervous invalid. But once the nervf-s are braced and the sys tem invigorated with llostettcr's Stomach Bitters, this abnormal sensitiveness is suc ceeded by a tranquillity not to be disturbed by trivial causes. Impaired digestion is a fertile cause of nerve weakness and unnatu ral mental gloom, and a vigorous renewal of the action of the stomach is one of the surest means of Invigorating and quieting the nerves. Insomnia, or sleeplessness, a form of nervous disease. Is unquestionably benefited uy seuatives. wnen it is proiongeu. or oi ire qucnt occurrence, but Its permanent removal Is more elfeciually achieved with the Bitters.
