(z) Itc gaUtj gMfonan, ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY SEPTEMBER C. 18S5 "Called Back:" the inugwnmps by the New York Republicans. e The official census of Minnesota, just completed, shows a population of 1,118,450, an increase of 337,718 since 1880. The number of immigrants landed at Castle Garden so far this year is 25,000 or thereabouts less than during the corresponding period of 188L It is a curious fact that the Buffalo Telegraph, the first paper to publish the Maria Halpin scandal, has not only ceased to exist, but has been absorbed by the Evening JVeew, Cleveland's home organ. Divers have brought to the sur face from the wreck of the steamship Atlantic, which was lost near Morris rock, N. S., in 1873, a bar of iron with seventy sovereigns attached, which must have been affixed by some chem ical action. "About nine thousand actors will start from New York with the various traveling attractions in October," said a prominent theatrical manager to a Sun reporter recently. 'New York is the point from which nine tonths of the shows start." The failure to hold the September term of court in this county is to be regretted for several reasons. "With the legislature rests the blame, though, as in most cases of the kind, "blame" is useless. "What is needed is legislative timber of a different sort. A curious result of the new act in England for the protection of young girls, which advances the age of con sent to sixteen years, is that girls under sixteen who have not previous ly lived a correct life, find the great eat difficulty in obtaining situations as domestic servants. Gen. Sherman, writing the other day to Col. Pavey of Pittsfield, Mass., declining an invitation to visit the Berkshire Hills, added: "I will not have an hour to myself till after Sep tember 15lh, having to travel 5,000 or or G,000 miles to comply with engage ments to oblige other persons than myself." The engineers of the St. Gothard railway are said to have reported that it would bo impossible to transport the 200-ton guns theKrupp manufac tory at Essen has engaged to manu facture for the Italian government, and of which one is now ready, as the line and bridges would sink be neath such a weight. Considerable present effort is made to boom Yaquina. The News' San Francisco correspondent and Portland newspapers generally ap pear to be enthusiastic over things that way. "We are glad to see such disinterested aid to a worthy project. Yaquina has natural and acquired advantages that deserve attention. The French are going to commem orate the revolution by a tremendous exposition in tho centennary year of 1889, at Paris. An immense building will be put up, extending from the palace of the Champs Elysees to tho Place du Concert de 1'Horloge, and life as it was in Paris a hundred years ago will be reproduced by various peculiar devices. . California papers are discussing the financial wisdom of cities going in debt; tho majority favor the idea, and say that it is a good plan. No amount of plausible reasoning or deft logic can controvert one plain established truth what man is there better off for being in debt? and what is a city or a community but an aggregation of individuals? It is reported in London that King Alfonso will ask the emperor of Aus tria to use his influence with tho German government in behalf of Spain, and to persuade Prince Bis marck to abandon his scheme of oc cupation of the Caroline islands. King Alfonso is further reported as saying that the affair has so aroused the Spanish people that ho would lose his throne should he recede from tho claim of Spain to tho islands, and that Spain would bo ruined if ho should push his claim. The Oregon Pacific railroad, under the name of tho "Willamette Valley k Coast railroad, submits to the people of Linn county a proposition to se cnre thoir aid for extension of the road from Corvallis to Alhany. They are asked to subscribe $50,000 for the purpose either in money or such land and water privileges as tho company may be willing to accept as part of the subscription. They offer to es tablish a depot in the town of Albany and to erect depot buildings and re pair shops thereon. The United Slates authorities at Port TownBend have sixteen Chineso on hand who had been smuggled from this side of the line to the other last Friday, and were ordered back to British Columbia by the district court. The United States marshal arrived with the Chinamen, and they not having certificates were asked to pay 650 entrance fee. This they had not, and the United States marshal did not pay it for them. They were taken back to Port Townsend, and it will now be necessary for the govern ment to decide where the Chineso are entitled to find a resting place. The work on the line of the C. & O road above Delta will be begun at once, but until next spring it will be confined to certain points where the greatest difficulties will be met with, such as hills that must bo tunneled, or great ledges that must be cut through. During the winter the work will bo pushed ahead as fast as its nature will permit, although it is not possible to make uso of so large a force of workmen as the company would like to employ. But the work done, although in a nature prepara tory, will prove of immense value when tho work is pushed next spriug all along the line, as will be done. If nothing interferes with the progress of tho work, the line will be completed to the Oregon boundary within one year. J. Kergovatz, a chemist of Brest, has discovered a mode of disposing of tho mortal remains of humanity which he considers preferable in ever way both to inhumation and cremation. All that is necessary is to rub the body over with a solution of plumbagino aud then plunge it into a copper bath. But copper being rather an expensive mineral, zinc may bo substituted for it in case of the poor. On the other hand, persons of luxurious tastes may use silver or gold if they please, the effect being the same. Tho discover er has tried his system eleven times on tho human subject and on a huu dred dead animals, and ho has never once known it to fail. Among tho manifold advantages which would result from tho adoption of this sys tem, M Kergovatz mentions ono which, if generally availed of, will strike a death blow at one of the fine arts. By simply prolonging the dura tion of tho bath the body is rcndred as hard and as indostructiblo as granite, and thu3 tho country is provided with "ready made statues of great men, ' and the state and the communes will be saved in the future the considerable oxpeuso which our present dependence on the statuary art for memorial purposes imposes on them. 3I.VKIli:i.
