An Officeholder "Who Threatened to Chas- J j tie the Removiss Power. Governor George Alattbews, who was twice elected governor or Georgia, first in 17S7 and again in 1793, was a remarkable man in several respects. When asked who was the greatest man in the United States, he said: "My opinion is that George "Wash ington is the greatest, and 1 consider myself the next. "Wo are both Vir ginians." He was appointed by president Ad ams, territorial governor for Missis sippi, but when it was brought to his attention that Governor Matthews had signed the Yazoo fraud act and that the senate would not confirm the appointment, he immediately with drew it. Ho had notified Governor Matthews that he had sent in his nami' to the senate, perhaps writing, asking him if he would accept the appointment. In time it came to Governor Mat thews' cars that the president had re called his appointment and had sent in another name. "Without a day's delay he packed his saddlebags, gird ed on his sword, the one ho woro in the war, and started for Philadelphia, the then seat o government, to de mand an explanation of the treatment ho had received. In three weeks he was in Philadelphia, riding into the city about nine o'clock in the morn ing, and asking directions to the president's house. When found ho tied his horse to a post, aud ringing at the bell, a negro made his appear ance. ''Is President Adams in?" asked Governor Matthews. "Yes, sir." 'Tell him a gentleman wishes to seo him." "The -president does not receive callers at this time in the morning." "Your business is to earn messages, is it not?" "Yes. sir." "l'ell him a gentleman wishes to seo him." "The president does" "It yon don't carry my message I will crack your head with this sword," putting his hand on the liau d!e." The servant disappeared aud told President Adams there was a queer sort ot a man who wanted to see him, aud would take no refusal. "Show him into the parlor," said Mr. Adams. Pretty soon in came Mr. Adams, bowing politely to his visitor. "President Adams, I presume.'' said Governor Mathews. Mr. Adams bowed assent. "My name is Governor George Matthews, of Georgia, and colouel of the Eighth regiment of the Virginia lino during the war." "Glad to see yon Governor Mat thews; take a seat." "You appointed mc territorial gov ernor of Mississippi, and havo re called the appointment, and if you do not give mo a satisfactory reason for your conduct in the matter, I will chastise you, sir." President Adams saw that he meant what he said an I, using a good deal of diplomacy with him, satisfied his mind that there was no insult, slight or reflection intended in recalling the appointment, aud wound up by asking if he had a son. "Yes, I have a son, George, a man about my inches, with a liberal edu cation and for whose integrity I will pledge you my head. I wonld be pleased if you would give him some office." "I will give your son an office," said Mr. A ' "Thank you, sir. Good morning." and out he walked, mounted his horse, and Inrued his face toward Georgia. President Adams kept his word, and appointed George Matthews, Jr., a territorial pudge for Mississippi. "When Louisiana was purchased of France, Judge Matthews removed to Louisiana, and in time became a su preme court judge, and mado' some thing of a reputation as a jurist. Su vannali JVeios.
