Washikgtok, Aug. 2L According to a prominent official of the interior department, Secretary Lamar is once more relapsing into bis old habits of forgetfulness and absent-mindedness which so distinguished his days in the United States senate. When Mr. Lamar was appointed there was a general feeling that ho was not enough of a practical worker to at tend to the great mass of business in the interior department. At first tho secretary took hold with a vim and surprised his critics. Lately, how ever, he has gone back to "his old habits with a vengeance and the bu reau officials are greatly concerned about the work. They "say thnt in the midst of his duties, the secretary will walk into his office, stroll down to the room of one of his subordi nates and talk for hours about tho south, the mistake of the secession moveraenr, etc. At other times Mr. Lamar will go out fdr a few minutes walk and forget to come back all day. He has made no arrangements to go away for a summer visit, but just takes things easy here, alternately working and dreaming. Almost a Dad. Bar Haebor, Me., Aug. 24. A sto ry is going tho rounds to the follow ing effect and has caused a sensation here: Hon. Alfred B. Conkling, of Xew York, nephew of Boscoe Conk ling, a few days ago was in tho com pany of a lieutenant in the nary, when the latter engaged in somo remarks derogatory to Gen. Grant's character. Conkling denounced the lieutenant, and subsequently sent him a challenge to fight a duel. Tho latter declined on the ground that it was contrary to tho navy regulations. Thereupon Conkling sent him word he would shoot him on sight The lieutenant then accepted tho chal lenge, bnt tho admiral interfered and prevented him from leaving his ship. Both Conkling and the officers of tho vessel decline to givo the lieutenant's Starved to Death. Erie, Pa., Aug. 21. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Bepose, poor but very proud people, entered tho poor director's of fico yesterday, bringing their beauti ful young daughter who was dying for want of food and medicine. "For God's sako givo her some food," said the man, struggling with his prido and former station in life. When it came their turn to bo waited upon and they were about to present their child to corroborate their story, it was found she had died whilo wait ing for her turn. Tho parents, who had kept their sufferings secret from their many neighbors, wero with dif ficulty restrained from committing suicide. Tho ago which oysters may livo uuder favorable circumstances is yet unknown, but specimens have been found which were believed to bo from 2o to 30 years old. With care the bi valves may bo kept alivo for a con siderable time after removed from the habitat It is stated that they have lived on tho floor of a cold cellar for three months.
