One Hundred Thousand Islamites Devas
tating the African Interior.
Washington', Aug. 24, Secretary
oE State Bayard is in receipt of a dis
patch from Sierra Leone, jjiring ac
counts of the movements of an army
of 100,000 men in the interior of Af
rica. The dispatch is dated July Uth
last, and was sent by U. S. Consul
Lewis. Mr. Lewis says:
"I havo tho honor to bring to tho
notico of the department of state tho
fact of an extraordinary movement
amongthe Mobemmedans of tho Ni
griliau regions, extending from Tim
buctoo to the west coast It appears
that a Mandingo, named Lamudu, of
extraordinary intelligence and ener
gy, conceived the idea that ho was
called of God to wage a war for the
sunpression of paganism, and also
for the purpose of opening the roads
to the coast, which in certain districts
havo been for generations suojecieu
to excessivo blackmail and to tho
plundering of vagabond tribes. Dur
ing tho last five years ho has collect
ed an army consisting of foot and
horse, about 100,000 men. The Mo
ll ammedan youth, wherever he goes,
flock to his standard, anxious not on
ly to secure tho reward in tho hero
nflr nromised to those who fight for
their religion, but to carry off the-

ditions that battlo for the faith aro
sure to win. It i3 said that Lanindu's
army i3 divided iuto threo portions.
One is operating near tho head wa
ters of tho Niger. This portion re
cently drovo certain French troops
from tho gold regions of Boarse, of
which they had taken possession
and are now besieging Bammaks, a
largo town on tho Niger, occupied
about threo years by tho French, who
have erected fortifications there.
Another portion ef the army is oper
ating in the region east of Liberia,
and by suppressing disturbing ele
ments, unfettering trade and intro
ducing a knowledge of religion and
letters, is in one sense opening a way
for negro immigrants of intelligence I
ana energy irom amunua n iuon
out from
THE AFRICA-AMERICAN REPUBLIC
To the healthy regions of the interi
or. In another sense it i3 forestall
ing tho whole region for Mohammed
ism and making it difficult, if not im
possible, if indeed, it is desirable, to
convert that country to the faith im
ported from America by the immi
grants. The third portion of the
array is approaching tho coast a few
miles northwest of Sierra Leone. It
has secured the submission, by force
or Toluntarv surrender, of all the
tribes on the way for 300 miles back.
The largest and most important
kingdom on this sido of the Niger
was Soolima, on which Tallaba, a
large commercial city, was the capi
tal. For tho last sixty years tho Ful
ah Mohammedans havo been trying
by diplomacy and arni3 to subdue
this city to their faith, but it ha3 al
wnvs successfully resisted both dip-
lomat and warrior. Last year Lamu
du's army in overwhelming numbers
surrounded it and called upon ihe
king to surrender and profess tho
faith of Islam. This he refused to do.
The town was then invested, nnd af
ter a terrible siege of ilvo months
the king assembled tho royal family
and tho principal chiefs in his pow
der house, informed them that he
could hold out no longer, as his re
sources were oxhausted, but having
for more than 200 years belonged to
the ruling element, ho was deter
mined for himself aud family to dio
rather than como under Mohammed
an rule. He gave the chiefs their
choice, either to dio with him or to
go out of tho town and give them
selves up to the enemy. They do
milwl to dio with him. He then set
fire to the powder, and they were all
blown up. This ended tho Soolima
power, which for more than seven
generations had influenced tho trade
and politics of these extensivo dis
tricts and had commanded the prin
cipal highway to the coast Another
very important achievement of this
army is the
DESTRUCTION OF THE HOOBOO TOWER,
An irresponsible organization which
has been a source of annoynnco and
loss to caravans passing from tho in
terior to the coast Lamudu gave
orders to attack them in their mount
ain strongholds, which, until then,
had tiroven inaccessible to tho neigh
boring forces. They wero surprised,
their chief, Abol, was captured and
decapitated, and hi3 arms and legs
severed from the trunk, were sent to
the various countries that had suf
fered from his depradatory and mur
derous proceedings. The Hooboos
are described as renegade Faulabs
in the rebellion against King Timboo.
The roads have now been cleared of
theso tbiove3 and murder
ers so that an unprotected
child or female may travel iu safety
all through the district These opera
tions will not bo without a salutary
effect upon American commerce, for
thero is in that country an increasing
demand for American productions,
and many of tho articles produced by
tho people are Talaablo in tho Amer
ican trade. Lamudu's army is now
only a few miles from tho coast,
northwest from Sierra Leone. It is
said to bo their purpose now to deal
with the Timuch and Sherbro coun
tries, wbose constant ware keep mari
time regions in such a state of fer
ment that often tho car&Tans have
stranded through obstructions for
J hundreds ot miles. They find that
their greatest diflioulty is among the
const tribe?, and often fall victims to
the latter.
Rum, Romanism and Rebellion.
New York, Aug. 2t Bev. Dr.
Burchard wanders around Saratoga
like a ghost of an old gentleman. Al
though ho looks very calm and se
rene, as if he had the clearest of con
sciences, yet ho cannot bo very com
fortable. He is ono of the most
notorious men now living. "Wher
everhogoe3 he is followed by, tho
wink and snicker of some one who
regards Burchard's existenco as a
huge joke. "There he goes!" "That's
the man!" "Thati3 Cleveland's best
friend!" are tho constant exclama
tions uttered in his hearing. He
looks very patient under this fire.
.
Atlantic City is said to havo a flag
EO wired mat it cannot nang niiiy,
even if thero is no breath of air stir
ring. It is fixed above tho gablo of
a hotel, and is intended to convince
tho heated guest that his discomfort
is imaginary.

The Knlsance and the Remedy.
Foul water, filthy streets, bad sew
erage and unpleasant milk, when all
crowded together into ono city, mako
as malarious and unwholesome a state
of affairs as citizens can stand. But
the disgusted citizens need not think
themselves all bound for the ceme-
etery on this account Malaria and
every other unclean influence can be
fought off with lirowu s iron imtors.
Mr. F. Patterson, Marshalltown, Iowa,
writes. "Brown's Iron Bitters has
completely cured me of malaria."
It would be a strange thing to see a
southern stato furnish the next pro
hibition candidate for president But
it is not improbable. There are
swarms of prohibitionists in Georgia,
and they are actually talking about
running Gov. Colquitt for tho presi
dency in 188S.St.Zouis Iiepublicai
