Various steam tngs and yachts beside the Uloicana were examined, but it was difficult to find a seaworthy ship possessing draught sufficiently small to enable her to pass tho treacherous bar at the month of the Magdalena river, eight een miles np which Rarrranquilla is situated. Meanwhile the rebels have evacuated and the lroop3 of the na tional government have entered this important port, bat Colombia (such will be the ship's designation), will doubtless bo iu timo to assist in terminating this and certainly in pre venting another revolution. Indeed two fairly armed cruisers o average speed, one in tho Atlantic and the other in the Pacific would suffice to keep tho maritime state of this turbu lent little neighbor in tranquility and peace. The Colombia will be armed with two Gatling guns and two rapid-firing breech-loading Hotchkiss cannon, fifty-seven milli meters in calibre. These are the very latest thing in the way of small can non and are made at tho factory of tho late American inventor of that name near Paris. They aro identical with those recently delivered to the British admiralty and fire she-pound shot or percussion fuse shell with great precision and destructive effect Commander Folger of the United States Navy, at the Annapolis prov ing ground, recently sent a chilled steel projectile from one of these guns throngh six inches ot wrought iron. It was almost impossible to wait the necessarily slow construction of the guns at the factor', their transpor tation heie, etc., nor could they be bought in the open market, so tho good offices of the United States wero invoked. The cabinet at "Washing ton, it is assumed, is not adverse to helping that at Bogata. Onr South American trado has been seriously crippled by the burning of Colon and tho practical closing of the ports of Cartagena and Barrauquilla, particu larly the latter. THE CASCADE BRANCH. The theory is entertained that thero is more significance in the resignation of Gen. Anderson as chief engineer of tho Northern Pa cific than appears on the surface. And that is that the project of ex tending tho main lino to tide water on Pnget sound, as contemplated in the charter, has been for the present abandoned. Tho fact is known that the bids invited some time since for the building of the Cascade tunnel were all rejected. This is perhaps the se cret of the straggle now going on between the present holders of the control of stock in tha company aud tho C. Ii. "Wright party of Philadel phia, who recently sent out circulars inviting proxies to vote at the Sep tember meeting, among other things, on tho ratiGcation of the proposed lease of the Oregon Railway and Navigation company's lines, which would givo tho Northern Pacific an assured outlet to the coast yia Port land. C. B. "Wright owns immense landed interests on Puget sound, and would of course like the Cascade ex tension pushed in that direction with all possible dispatch. It is safe to say that the definite policy of the company as to the Cascade extension will not be clearly defined until after tho September meeting. Consider able work has been done already on this extension, and it might be push ed through at an early date wero it not for the forbidding character of tho Cascade tunnel, which will require abouttwo yearn' time in the con struction and cost about a million dollars. If it shall be determined to build the extension at an early date, the tunnel contract will probably be let this season. Rut the result of tho September meeting will be await ed with considerable interest, es pecially on the west end. St. Paul Globe, 13. . What Yon Want to Know. Everybody wants an honest answer to this simple questien: What is the best medicine to regulate tho bowels, cure costiveness and biliousness, help digestion and give Btrength to tho whole system? People ask us this every day. "We answer, Parker's Ton ic. It is pleasant to the taste. All children like it. Mothers all praise it It will savo a thousand times its cost in every family. Editor Western Arffiis. Twenty thousand Hungarians who have been working In the Pennsyl vania mines are preparing to migrate in a body to north-western Canada, where tho dominion government will give them 200,000 acres of fertile land. They were agricultural peasants in their native land, and are tired of mining. This is the largest move ment of population in a single body that has ever occured in this country.
