m She gaiftj sforiau. ASTORIA, OP.EGOX: SATURDAY. ACGUST22. 1SS3 27E OTHER SIDE. Ik the current xiumbar o the North American llctiew, the Rev. Al. J. Savage goes after the newspapers in a good unttired -way and evidently thinks that ho has niado out a strong case. After praising the news papers for all they are ho directs pub lic attention to all they might be, at the same time implying that it is the fault of the newspapers that they are not in all things perfect. Mr. Savage seems to have forgotten that newsnapers like churches, de pend largely upon the public for sup port; that editors, liko ministers, are not wholly perfect, and that this world is just what the people living in it make it. That a newspaper should advocate "special interests' is no more unrea sonable than that a minister at $1,500 a year should accept a :caU" from another congregation at $2,000. Of course when the newspaper advocries "special interests"' it is wicked and ungodly; of course when a $1,500 minister gets a "call" to go where ho will get $2,000 it is only because lie may ''widen the sphcro of his useful ness," but the secular miud hath oc casional difficulty in discerning the difference. Business is business even in the pulpit. The reverend gentleman's whole ar gument appears to bo the argument of a well meaning man who wants to be fair, but who hasn't much under standing of the subject which he at tempts to discuss. The best evidence wc can offer as to this is the well known fact that whenever men like Mr. Savage start to run a newspaper they iuvariably wind up with the sheriff in possession. Did it ever occur to the Rev. Mr. Savage that tho newspaper we speak of the American newspaper is a pri vate enterprise? just iike a grocery store, or a salmon cannery, or a bak ery, or a steamboat, or a millinery establishment, or anything else that is run as a legitimate business with regard to the laws o supply and de mand. The object o all these is to make money for their owners. "What ever motive may be given out for starting a newspaper, expecta tion of profit by it is the real one, whether the newspaper is religious, scientific, political, or literary. A newspaper is started or maintained whenever and wherever one or hio or half a dozen men think there is a prospect of a fair return for the amount of labor and expense required to conduct it. This motive is not lower than that wbicb leads people into any other occupation. To make a living and to bave a career, is tho original in centive in all cases. Even in purely philanthropic enterprises the driving wheel that keeps them in motion for any length of time is tho salary paid tho working members. So powerful is this incentive, that sometimes the wheel will continue to turn round when there is no grist to grind. It sometimes happens that the friction of the philanthropic machinery is so great, that but very little power is transmitted to tho object for which the machinery was made. Cases arc not wanting where agents for the evangelization 01 the heathon have for years collected just enough to buy good clothes and pay board at a second-class hotel. Of course tho newspaper man v. ho has no high ideals, no intention of benefiting his fellow-men by his newspaper, and uses it unscrupulous ly as a means of money-makiug only, sinks to tho level of the physician and tho lawyer who have no higher con ception of their callings than that they offer opportunities for getting money by appeals to credulity, and by assisting in evasions of the law. If a newspaper does not pay its owner it is no uso to him; no value to tho public. As a rule tho successful journal, pecuniarily, is the best. The reasons for this are on the surface. The impccuuious news paper cannot give its readers the news, nor able discussion of the news, and, still worse, it cannot be independent. The newspaper that depends upon puffs, or slobber, or personal favors for support is a poor affair, and, in tho long run, or short run, will come to grief. Some newspapers do suc ceed by sensationalism as some preachers do by a kind of quackery, a3 some doctors do by trimming and shifting to any momentary popular prejudice as soma politicians do by becoming the paid advocate of personal ambition or corporate greed, as some lawyers do but the newspaper only becomes a real power when it is able, on tho basis of pecu niary independence to freo itself from such entanglements. A man in a newspaper office with his hat in his hand and appealing for alms is given the same respect any other beggar gets. The claim of the newspaper on the public is just the same as tho saw mill, or the tailor, or the druggist : neither has a right to complain if the public do not buy at his placo of business. If tho buyer doesn't like the lumber or tho cloth, or the medi cine, he goes elsewhere. It tho sub scriber doesn't like one newspaper he takes another, or none. The appeal for newspaper support on the plea that such a journal ought to be supported by an enlightened community, or on any ground than that it is a good article, that people wantor would want if they only knew how good it was is childish. If a man wants to start a newspaper ho has lots of room; no one will hin der him; if when his newspaper is started he devotes it to the introduc tion of decorated teapots, with the noble view of coasing peoplo to live up to his idea of what a teapot should be all right; but he has no right to complain it he fails. Tho American newspaper is said to bo tho best in the world; no doubt it is for the American people. There is great room for improve ment, though not in the lino that Mr. Savago gently suggests. YOUIl OPINIOX JS ASKED. The Columbia sails for San Fran cisco this morning. A part of her cargo furnishes food for men across the sea. It also furnishes food for thought. She carries sonio eastern Oregon and "Washington wheat io San Francisco. This wheat was loaded on wagons and hanlcd to the railway station, loaded on tho cars and haulod to Portland, loaded on the river boats and hauled to Astoria, loaded on Ilia wharf awaiting the ar rival of the Columbia. She couldn't take it on at Portland because the river is loo low, so it was sent on ahead of her in little hundred ton lots. This niorniug it will be loaded on the ocean steamer and taken to San Francisco; there it will be loaded on the wharf and taken to an En glish vessel where it will be taken aboard and carried to Liverpool. There is no comment needed on this. If the producer, the man that pays for all this handling, can stand it. we can. But supposing we of Oregon read the above exact staloment of facta regarding a similar st3'le of wheat ship ments that obtained elsewhere: what would bo our opinion of the business sagacity of those who permitted or endured such a ridicu lous and costly system? jas::cjki.
