A STRANGE TRANSFORMATION.
JoiiTET (HI.), Aug. 13. Mary Dan
iels of Terre Haute, a white woman,
and Charles A. Stewart, a negro,
hailing from the same city, were re
leased frcm tho Jolicfc prison this
morning, after serving one year each
for bigamy. Mary eloped from Terre
Hante, leaving her white husband,
and Stewart left his colored wife.
The two went to Marseilles, 111., and
were married, hut were followed up
from Indiana by Stewart's dusky bet
ter half, who had them arrested and
convicted. A peculiarity about the
Daniels voman is that when she
reached the prison her face and
hands had been colored by some kind
of a stain that gave her the appear
ance of a bright-colored mulatto wo
man. A year's sojourn behind the
bars had bleached out her skin to its
natural color, so that when she was
called upon for discharge this morn
ing the prison officials were aston
ished to see that instead of being a
mulatto Mary Daniels had bine eye
and a fair skip, and rosy cheeks, and
instead of kinky hair her head was
adorned with bangs of light browu
color. Stewart had neen released
several hours ahead of the woman,
but instead of leaving town ho hung
about the prison, waiting for her re
lease. She remained at the prison
until the St. Louis train arrived,
when she got aboard, giving her col
ored lover the slip.
HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
Grained wood should ho washed
with cold tea.
If paper has been laid nuder tho
carpet all dnst may be easily removed
with it
Mortar and paint may be removed
from window glas3 with hot, sharp
vinegar.
Copperas mixed with the white
wash put upon tho cellar walls will
keep vermin away.
Ceilings that have been smoked
should be washed off with soda wa
ter. Drain pipes and all places that are
sour or impure may be cleansed with
lime water or carbolic acid.
Strong brine may be used to ad
vantage in washing bedsteads. Hot
alum water is also good for this pur
pose. Tho warmth of floors is greatly in
creased by having carpet lining of
layers of paper under tho carpet
Cayenne pepper blown into the
cracks where ants congregate will
drive them away. The samo remedy
is also good for mice.
If gilt frames, when new, are cov
ered with a coat of white varnish, all
specks can then easily ba washed off
with water without harm.
If a bedstead creaks at each move
ment of the sleeper, remove tho slats
and wrap tho end of each in old news
paper. This will prove a completo si
lencer. It tho wall about the stove has been
smoked by tho stove, cover the black
patches with gum shellac, and they
will not strike through either paint
or kalsomiue.
Carpels should be thoroughly beat
on the wrong side first, and then on
tho right side, after which spol3 may
be removed by the use of ox-gall or
ammonia and water.
Furniture needs cleaning as much 33
other woodwork. It may be washed
with worm soap suds quickly, wiped
dry and then rubbed with an oily
cloth. To polish it rub with rotten
stone and sweet oil. Clean off the oil
and polish with chamois skin.
The "Whatcom Reveille says: "The
people of Bellingham Bay are tho un
happy possessors of booms withont
business, saw mills withont lumber
produce without market, railroads
without cars, water works without wa
ter, coal mines without coal. Let us
hope that the new gold fields will vield
some of the yellow dust. Tho lle'ceille
is tried of chronicling tho birth of
booms which die abornin.' "
A lobster used to be a meal for an
old-fashioned family, when a family
was eqnal to a modern boarding
house, and there was enongh and to
