Yoakan aro making some valu able improvements at their places on Cooh river, near the mouth, calcu lated to reclaim and bring under cul tivation a portion of that vast tract of land that Las produced nothing but marsh grass since its formation. Herron and Luse, at the slough be tween their lines, are putting in tido gato boxes, 2x4 feet in tho clear, under a wall of rock and dirt 30 feet in length across tho slough, 10 feet at tho bottom, 3 feet at the top, and. 9 feet high, perpendicular landward and sloping, with a rock front, to the river. Luse and Yoakam are putting in similar works at the slough between their lines, and at two sloughs on Yoakam's place he is do ing likewise, except at the smaller slough the box is only 2 feet in the clear. Herron is also diking his place around "Wallace slough. He starts his dike a foot high at the river bank and runs on a level to the hill, a half-mile back, where tho diko will be three feet high. It is expected that all tho above mentioned work will be completed during this month. Coast Mail. Satsop Railroad. Tho locomotive and ten logging cars for the Satsop railroad went up the sound on a scow iu tow of the tug Jilahdy. Mr. McDonald informs tho Chronicle that tho iron for the road will leave San Francisco to morrow on the steamer Umpire, and that after its arrival only ten days will be required to lay tho three miles already graded and tied, when log ging will commence in earnest Mr. McDonald says that his firm has not yet decided tho exact location of the mill on this side of tho Sound. Their mill in Michigan is just now finishing up its supply of logs, and will close down shortly, when tho Puget Sound enterprise will receive their undi vided attention. The lHh was the 37th anniversary of the passage of the act by congress which mado Oregon n territory. The llth day of August, 1S18, was a day to be remembered in Oregon history and each recurrence is remembered, especially by the pioneers who, before that, had no protection but a provis ional government. Tho 14th day of February, St. Valentine's day, 1859, was the dato of the stato being ad mitted to tho Union. The age which oysters may livo uuder favorable circumstances is yet unknown, but specimens have been found which were believed to bo from 25 to 30 years old. With care the bi valves may be kept alivo for a con siderable timo after removed from the habitat It is stated that they have lived on the floor of a cold cellar for three months. A bilk who was arrested at The Dalles for begging had with him a memorandum of his success as a beg gar, beginning tho 15th of January. His accounts showed that he had "collected' from that dato to the timo of his arrest S51-L15. Begging is a pretty good business after all. In several connties, says tho Eu gene Jteyister, since the late decision of tho mortgage tax law, tho loaning companies have offered to pay one third of taxes assessed against them.
