CONCEUNIXfi THE GRANT MONUMENT.
Washington, Aug. 1C Gen. S. S.
Brtrdette, commander of the G. A. R,
has returned from tbc encampmenls
! at Gettysburg and Springtield, Ills.
To a Hi-publican reporter Gen. Bur
, detle to-day said that at each of
these places be spoke lo veterans te
gardtng tbc erection of a monument
to Gen. Grant, and they were unani-
inously in favor of its location at
Washington. "It would have done
I you good," .a;d he, ''to see tbo en
thusiasm that was awakened at the
chance given the boys to honor their
dead commander. The Grand Army
propose to subscribe 10 cents from
, every member, and there are 300,000
ot tisem lurougiioiu mis country.
They mean to erect a monument to
Grant in "Washington, and I don't
think the dav is far distant when
Gen. Grant will bo placed for final
ret in Washington.
Iu reply to Gen. 11. J3. Hayes' letter,
suggesting that tho authorities of the
G. A. It. encourage their comrades to
contribute to the building of a monu
ment on the grave of Gen. Grant,
Gen. TJurdetto says: "I have been
unable to bring my mind into accord
with yours on that point. I hold to
the opinion that tho G. A. It will de
sire, iirst of all, to erect its own dis
tinctive monument lo our comrade,
not at great cost, but for that pur
pose raising only such a sum as is
composed of the equal contributions
of each individual comrade that shall
b. within the reach and glad gift of
the poorest. The national monu
ment lo bo erected lo Gen. Grant
should be of such proportions and
cost as to be beyond the reach of pri
vate benevolences, and ot right and
propriety ought lo be ordered by the
congress of the United States and paid
for out of the national treasury, and
that consequently the Grand Army
should not be called upon for the ef
fort you indicate."
The Proposed Leac.
riiiiiADuriPiiiA, Aus- 17. In the
negotiations for the lease ot the Ore
gon Railway and Navigation com
pany's property by the Northern Pa-
ciilc Railway company matters have
advanced so far that tlie terms of the
proposed lease having been approved
by tho Northern Pacific directors,
thev are to be submitted to the stock
holders of the company at the annual
meeting in September. Charles P.
Wright, formerly president ot tho
Northern Pacific, and still one of its
most influential managers, is said to
be opposed to the lease, for the al
leged reason thai it will make Port
land the Pacific terminus of the road
instead of 'lacoma, where he has
largo vested inteiesls. If the lease is
consummated the company will be in
possession of a through line to the
Pacific, terminating at Portland. If
it be not consummated, the necessity
of constructing the Cascade division,
terminating at Tacoma, will become
at once imperative.
Pakis, Aug. 17. TSInlransiyiuni,
Pocheforrs paper, jesterday pub
lished a letter which, it is alleged,
proves that Olivier Pain, the French
man who was the reported military
adviser of El Jlahdi, was executed at
the instaneo of Pritish officials in
Egypt. This letter says that the
British put a price on Pain's head,
and that he was tracked aud arrested
and then summarily credited by ord
er of the stall' of the English army,
at the time it was engaged in war
against El Mahdi.
Nnvr Oumzaxs, Aug. 1G. A special
to the Times-Dunavrat from Vicks
bnrs says: Aun Ilogan, colored, died
in this county yesterday, 120 years of
age. Her peculiarity was her hair,
which was three feet long, a sample
of which was on exhibition at the
world's exposition at New Orleans.
Lokdok, Aug. 16. A dispatch from
Suakira states that Osman Digma
has forsaken his followers and fled to
Kordofau. The result is that many
sheiks are going into Snakim and
offering submission to tho British
commander.
Cairo, Aug. 16. Information has
been received here that civil war has
broken out at Khartoum; that the
treasury has been sacked, and that
El Mahdi's successor and other offi
cials have been killed.
Grasshoppers are numerous iu por
tions of Montana, and a government
agent reports that not only are there
large uumbsra of this destructive
Rocky mountain species at work, but
the comuiou native, and now migra
tory species, are also much more nu
inerons than usual.
The secretary of war has instructed
Gen. Miles, in command of the de
partment of tho Missouri, to hold
troops in readiness to enforce tho
presidents recent proclamation in re
lation to cattlemen on the Cheycnno
and Arapahoe reservations.
Capt. F. E. Pierce, of the First in

probable that officers of tho army

THE CHOLERA EPIDFJHC.
Madrid, Aug. 1C Cholera reports
for to-day show that there were fif
teen new cases and twelve deaths in
tho city of Madrid, and sixty-five new
cases and thirty deaths in tho prov
ince. The slight panic which broke
out a few days ago has subsided, and
the epidemic shows no further sign
of an increase. "Wherever the disease
prevails tho most stringent precau
tions are taken to prevent its spread.
Some of the most crowded houses
have been emptied, and their tenants
temporarily lodged for miles outside
the city. Public buildings are being
disinfected daily. The epidemic is
ravaging viranada, but is decreasing
in other southern provinces.
Marseh.IiES, Aug. 16. There were
twenty-seven deaths in this city to
day from cholera. At the Pharo hos
pital nineteen cases wero admitted
and seventy died, whilo seventy re
mained under treatment.
Madrid, Aug. 16. Returns from
the cholera infected districts of Spain

Saturday of 4706, and a total uumbor
of deaths from the disease of 175S.
Tho plague has made its appearance
at Barcelona, where seventy cases
and sixteen deaths are reported.
MarseiiiTiES, Aug. 16. Several
deaths from cholera have occurred in
the Innatic asylum here. Several
deaths aro reported at Monries and
Salon, caused by typhoid fever and
smallpox, which are of a severe type,
and very active.
LoxDOjf, Aug. 16. A letter from
Saigon reports that 600 French sold
iers ha,ve died of cholera in Formosa
and Pescadores; that tho hospitals
are overflowing with sufferers and
that the epidemic is increasing.
Old "Clubfoot," an immense griz
zly bear that has destroyed hundreds
of dollars worth of stock, and long
been the terror of Siskiyou, says
the Shasta Courier, was slain some
days ago by three hunters, who were
induced to go after him on the
strenth of a liberal reward. In the
fight the bear made minco meat of
a herd of dogs, and only gave up the
ghost after a pound or two of lead
had been pumped into him from
Winchesters-at short range.
Iu an article on the Pacific Mail
trouble the New York Tribune shows
that the proposed new mail service
via England and Brindisi to New
Zealand and Australia, will not ouly
be much slower, but more expensive.
The poslofiice department at Wash
ington has been informed by tho Pa
cific Mail company that it will con
tinue to carry mails from San
Francisco until tho expiration of its
contract with tho New Zealand gov
ernment, which occurs on November
29. Direct mail service from San
Francisco to Australia and New
Zealand has consequently been re
sumed. The Mystery or the 3111k.
'Milkman's Milk'' is quoted by a
popular journal as being ''weak and
quioting'. In a ucoudensed milk"
factory in tho milk district of New
York State, it was found to bo worse
than that. The farmers had diluted
it with water and thickened it with
borax and saltpetre. Is it any won
der that after feeding on this moss
the people suffer from indigestion?
Brown's Iron Bitters conquers indi
gestion in young or old; regulates
bowles and kidneys, and promotes
perfect health in spite ot the milk
adulterators.
The Bristol, England, Jlurcury
and Daily Post says: "The Austral

this country invariably used St.

invaluable remedy for sprains, sore

tusions." Thirteen Chinamen who were being
conveyed from this to the American
