ASTOPJA, OBEGOX:
SATURDAY AUGUST 1.1. 1SS3
HARD TIMES AND MATRIMONY.
Ax Ohio man has compiled a table
vvliicli shovs very clearly the effect of
Lard times upon tbo matrimonial
market. Just before the -war tbe
number of marriages in tbe state
averaged about 23,000 a year, tbe
total in 1800 being 23,10G, out of a
population of 2,339,51L Tbe influ
ence of tbe war was reflected in Ibe
fall to 19,010 in 18G2 and 19,300 in
18G3, while the return of peace was
followed in 1SGG by tbe unprecedent
ed number of 30,-i79. The average
settled down to about 2G,000 a year
after 1870, but the influence of tbe
panic of 1873 is seen in the drop
from 2G.G7S in 1874 to 23,489 in
1875. A similar result has fol
lowed the business depression
of the la3t two years, and the
number of marriages fell from
over 30,500 iu 1SS2 and 1SS3 to only
23,720 in 18SL Two other things are
shown by an analysis of tbe table.
One is the fact that tbe number of
marriages in Ohio is appreciably less
in proportion to the population
now than it was a quarter of a centu
ry ago. Before the war there was
one marriage every year to a little
over 100 inhabitants. The same ratio
now would require an annual average
of about 32,500, while for five years
past the average has been only 29,255,
and the highest number 30,G59 in
1883 is well short of these figures.
Another discovery is that the number
of children to each marriage has
fallen off iu a marked degree. In
1SG0 there were 23,10G marriages,
aud the mmber of births wa3
71,170. During the last five years the
number of marriages has averaged
29,255, and number of births has been
but G8158 fewer births than twenty
five years ago, with a married popu
lation over 25 per cent larger. Tho
disparity would doubtless appear still
greater if the comparison could be
restricted to the native population,
for a full eighth of Ohio's inhabitants
are of foreign birth, and another con
siderable percentage are the descend
ants of foreigners, among whom large
families are the rule. It would prob
ably be found upon such an auahsis
that the fecundity of Ohioau? who
are cf New England descent has di
minished iu as marked degree as that
of the inhabitants of the region from
which the' went
Evebxbody is familiar with the
general effects of the business de
pression upon manufactures and
trade and tho labor market, but it
was left to a Chicago paper to show
that there is no business which has
suffered more from hard limes and
tbe dullness of trade than the banks.
Kates of interest have been extreme
ly low, and have been constantly
growing lower for three years past.
But low as interest has been, the
banks have been unable to lend any
largo proportion of money in their
vaults, and it has laid idle for tbe
want of borrowers with acceptable
credit. The banks have been so
gorged with money that they have
bought 3 per cent, and other extreme
ly low priced bonds for investment,
and paid &uch premiums that they
realized little more than 2 per cent
intorest on their money. Bankers
ba e never had quite so hard limes
aud so heavy a pull as they are hav
ing now. Heretofore in periods of
depression interest has been high,
and the banks could find more bor
rowers than they had money. Now
the depression affects the bankB more
than any other class, and they sensi
bly feel its drain and exhaustion.
The city of Minneapolis has a cur
ious provision in its law relating to
the liquor traffic. Besides charging
a license fee of $500, the law marks
out certain patrol limits, including
tho business core of the city, within
which all tho saloons there are must
be established, and where they can
ba kept under close police inspection.
As to the rest of the city, including
all tho main residence portions of the
city, where, probably nine-tenths of
the inhabitants have their homes, ab
solute saloon prohibition prevails and
is rigidly enforced.
It is reported that Commissioner
Black, who received some weeks ago
a letter from 'a little girl twelve years
old," in which she pleaded for tho re
tention of her father, who is a Bepub
lican in office, and which request was
noticed publicly as having been
granted, has been overwhelmed with
letters from "little girls twelve years
old," asking the same favor. The
letters are now consigned to tho
waste basket
The Milwaukee expert, Talmadge,
in his final estimate places the total
wheat crop of tho United States at
324,000.000 or 305,000,000 bnBhels less
than last year.
Montana's output of gold, silver
and copper this year will reach $30,
000,000 much the largest figure ever
attained, and Montana thinks herself
on tho eve of a remarkable mining
development, which will rival in mag
nitude that of Colorado in the
"seventies," and be less speculative
and more enduring.
