EXPENSES OF THE FUNERAL.
Sew Yore, Aup;. 11. The Sun
says: ''Much of the funeral car
drapery -was taken to undertaker
Merritt's last night, and what re
mains will be taken there to-morrow.
ATr. ATerrilt said he did not yet lmow ,
what disposition he should inahe o
the material. The origiual cost of!
the car was something over 81,500.
All published statements concerning
the cost of Grant's funeral car are
iuire guess work. Things have not
yet taken such a shape that it could
be otherwise. Air. Alerritt said last
night that ho could not tell what
his bill would be. Ho did not yet
know what were the expenses of a
number of details which had been
executed by him, and until he knew
this it was impossible to make even
an approximate estimate of what his
charge would be The lirst order
came lo'him in a telegram from
Fred. Grant the day the general died,
ibis covered tho canopy, coffin, em
balming and all Hint was done at
Mt. McGregor. The second came
from the war depertrcent, and cover
ed the funeral car, 300 carriages and
work here iu the city. So far as he
knew now he should render one bill
to the government and the other to
Col. Grant.
"What the doctors' bills are is
equally as much in doubt. Dr.
Douglas, up to tho time ot General
Grant's death, had received from the
family only $1,000. This was in the
form of a check made out by the
general himself, on receiving an in
stalment of his retired pay.
Destroy that Sltjn.
One may feel that he is getting old,
but ho naturally dislikes that any
thing about his appearance should
advise others of tho fact. Yet nothing
does tli!3 so effectually as thin and
falling hair. No woman wants to
marry a man, and business firms hes
italo to employ a man, who shows this
fatal sign. Parker's Hair Balsam is
worth to you, in this regard, more
than its weight in diamonds. Use it,
and have plentiful and glossy hair.
Many have had every trace of gray
ness removed and bald snots covered
by using a single bottle.
Wnnl's Rcspoasibilitj- for (trant'rf De.ith.
New York, Aug. 11. Of the distin
guished inmate of tho Ludlow street
jail, Ferdinand "Ward, the plunderer
of Gen. Grant, and in the estimation
of many his murderer, the fact is
made public to-day that Dr. Shrady,
on being asked for his opinion as to
the justice of such an acensation, re
plied: ''Well, it was not strictly
cancer that killed the genet al, for
the breaking down of his physiqne
was dependent on other causes. The
strain of his financial rniu caused n
dreadful prostration. Tha cancer
was well seated when physicians were
first called in, yet it is the trnth that
but for Gen. Grant's depression we
should have decided upon a surgical
operation that certainly would have
prolonged his life, and might pos
sibly havo saved him." Upon this
reasoning stands this terrible acen
sation against "Ward.
