AN OCEAN TRAGEDY.
1 Suicide of a Sea-Irk Woman on the At
lautic.
on the ocean.
tVmong the many well-
lo do steerage nassencers
vi-siLin??!
their old homes were Mr. and Mrs. I
Shore, Yorkshire people, returninrj to
sec lheir relatives. They had vith
them five interesting children, all un
der twelve years of age. All had been
more or less sejisick for the first two
J days, but on the ocean growing
smoother they soon recovered their
! health and sp'irits. On tho third day
out from Sandy flook tne motuer
asked her husbaud'to bring her a cup
of tea. She seemed weak and nerv
ous, bus amid the group of her little
ones quite hap.n in attending to
their wants and listening to their
prattle about the novelty of their
srrronndings.
Suddenly, just after the father had
left his family, the passengers near
by heard an affrighted chorus of
childish voices crying: "Mother,
mother, dou'tF' Then the passen
gers saw the mother, as if impelled by
listeria, ascond the companion-way
as rapidly, as the motion of the vessel
would permit; next those on deck
were astonished to see her rush in a
frenzied manner to the bulwarks,
step en a box and throw herself head
long over the side of tho vessel. All
happened so suddenly that there was
no lime to intercept her, and the
steamer was going at full speed. In
stantly the thrilling cry was heard,
"A woman overboard I ' Tins aronseu
evervbodv. Simultaneously the
bridge bell raug, "Stop engines!'
The vessel was stopped as soon as
possible, a boat was lowered, and the
crew immediately pulled back into
the foaming track, but uselessly. A
seaman at the sido of the vessel who
saw the whole thing, said: "She nev
er rose, sir, and went down with S300
in a belt around her waist.'
During! the following four das,
till land was reached, Shore sat on
deck dazed, surrounded by his five
weeping children, he mourning rncsl
of all for their mother, who was
doubtless temporarily crazed by her
sufferings from her seasickness, and
least of all for the loss of his little
savings. But the sympathies of the
passengers were awakened and n
goodly collection made for him. This
scarcely aroused him from tho do
spondency into which the tragedy
had sunk him. On arriving at Liver
pool the poor fellow had instantly
left the ship before the correspondent
had boarded her. "instances are
rare of such suicides being accom
plished," said a medical man of great
experience at sea, "but the desire to
throw one's self into the sea after
ocean nausea is a common and dan
gerotis incident of seasickness."
TUP. ROACH FAILURE.
Xew York, Aug. 12. -The Tribunv
to-day says: "Tho secretary of the
navy received this afternoon tho as
signees of John lioach & Son, Geo.
IL Weed, Geo. "W. Quintard and their
counsel, Aaron J. Yauderiool. From
what could be learned about the con
sultation, Mr. Whitney is to take
charge of the works, plant and tools
of John Iioach Sc Son, and to finish
the cruisers. Mr. Weed is to handle
the money, and mike the profit if
thoro is any, acting virtually in the
capacity of the government's agent.
The compromise is looked upon as
the outcome of Secretary Whitney'a
discovery that it was impossible to
complete the cruisers at the govern
ment navy yards. A plan was inves
tigated, the place selected being in
the yard in Brooklyn. Upon advices
furnished by his agents, Secretary
Whitnev found it would cost at least
S300,000 to get the yard in condition
to do the re quired work and buy the
necessary tools, aud even then it
would have cost five limes more in
labor and materials to do the work
thon it would cost tho contractor."
The Tribune goes en to say that
Secretary Whitney found the con
tract for the remaining work on the
Chicago wrs S2S5.000. and that if
done in Roach's yards it would cost
$193,000 to complete her; that tho
contract price for the completion of
the Atlanta aud tho Boston wa3 SSo,
(00 each, and that tho work to be
done would cost SiO.000 each. These
were tho conditions that wero dis
cussed, at the conference, and the re
sult was an arrangement by which
tlic assignees are to release the ship
yards and plants and materials, with
out dispute, to the navy department
and the work of completion is to be
carried forward under the secretary's
personal supervision. The assignees
however, are to furnish tho labor,
materials and tools, and are to re
ceive tho full contract price for each
vessel. If, however, it should cost
more money than tho stipulated
prices to ' finish the crnisers, the
bondsmen are lo bold themselves
liable. This plan was entertained by
Secretary "Whitney when he issued
bis order of August 7.

SINKING OF. THE STEAMER LATONA.

charge a small cargo of wheat at one
of the lower docks. She kept close
to the line of wharves, and by the
time Morrison fctreet was reached she
was moving at full speed. The buoy
being gone, Capt. Miller did not no
tice the submerged pier of tho old
bridge, the pier immediately west of
the pivotal pier. The top of the pier
is less than two feet, below the sur
face of tho river, aid the steamer ran
against it with full force. She struck
on the port side, ripping a very large
hole through her planking and tim
bers. The shock was so violent that
the five or six passengers were
thrown from their feet Of course,
the water rushed into the hold
and almost instantly extinguished
the fires and drove the engineer and
fireman to tho upper deck. Capt
Miller immediately sounded signals
of distress. These were answered by
tho steamer City ofSellwood, which
took hold.of the Latona. The Trav
eler close at hand, also camo to tho
rescue, and the two assisting boats
attempted to get the Latona, over to
the east side and beach her, but she
filled so rapidly that this was impos
sible. When half way across the riv
er, and about 200 yards above the
bridge, the cargo of wheat shifted
and the boat sank, listing to star
board at an angle of about 45 de
grees. Sho lies in fifteen feet of wa
ter. Two passengers became panic
stricken and jumped overboard. One
was picked up by a skiff; the other
swam to tho Morrison street dock
and was hauled up. A horse belong
ing to the owners of tho Latona was
drowned. The Latona is owned by
Messrs. Jones, Nolan and Muckle
Bros., of St Helens and is valued at
about SS,000. Sho can probably be
raised without great difficulty. The
cause of tho accident is that the men
whos'e duty it was to look after the
matter neglected to replace the buoy
which marked the pier. During the
afternoon and eveniug the sunken
craft was visited by hundreds in
pleasure boats. Oreyonian, 12.
