It will be a pleasing announcement for our theater-goers to learn that "The Pri vate Secretary," which is spoken of as tho most amusing play of tho day, and which ha3 been such an extraordinary success, not only in England and Ger many, but in this country as well, i3 to bo seen hero on August 17lh. The Mad ison Squaro Theater company, including W. H. Gillette, M. A. Kennedy, Frank Tanuehill, Jn.Fanny Addison, Alice Sher wood, and others that appeared in tho original production, appear here for the first time. "The Private Secretary" is a farce, in three acts, abounding m complications which arise from the desire of Mr. Cat termole to have his nephew, Douglas, sow his wild oats. This he at once pretends to do. Ho is inspired with tho happy thought of entering tho house of Mr. Marsland, whero ho impersonates tho private secretary already engaged. Ho makes it his business to fall in lovo with tho first pretty girl he finds in tho estab lishment. In sowing his wild oats ho comes in contact with various female members of the family, one "of whom is a spinster whoso sensitive soul yearns for spiritual manifestations. When ltev. liobt. Spaulding (W. H. Gillette), tho private secretary, arrives, ho is forced to perform tho part of tho medium, not, however, with any clearness as to his function. The excitement and absurd ities of this particular scenq set tho house in great turmoil. The private sec retary doubts his own sanity. Every thing is at cross purposes; all nro drawn into tho whirlpool of contradictions and misunderstandings. As may be imagined from tho story of it, tho play is full of farcial fun, and tho response a continual roar around tho house. Spaulding is a "clerical error," and sets everybody with whom ho comes in contact to blundering about him. Ho is a booby, always in the wrong place, and tho dilemma is funny enough with out dialogue,-and really too ridiculous for words. It must bo seen to bo apprecia ted, and that it will bo well performed, o casual glanco will convince almost any one that this company which appears here, will compriso an nnequaled cast of characters: Kev. Kcibt. SpauMmg, private secretary to Mr. Maryland W. II Gillette Mr. dttennoh', a rich Kast Indian, . M. A. Kennedy Douglas, ids wild nephew Frank Tannehlll, jr. Mr. M:irland. a country squireH. Miss Eula Talbot MN; Ashford, spinster ami chaperonc ...Miss Fannv Addison Mrs. Stead a landladv...Mis Alie Sherwood .Mrs. Spaulding Z. Miss TIaud Gireux Mnl the little Spauhlings. Tho play will bo produced hero under tho management of Carl Adler. It is his intention to bring nono but first class troops here, nnd tho high reputation that tho Madison Square theater company has all over the United Stales will no doubt ba sustained in Astoria. Frca Exhibition. And auction sale of twenty highly fin ished oil paintings at B. S. Worsley's auction rooms by Prof Schafer of San Francisco. Tho above nanio should bo sufficient guaranty to any lady or gen tleman that this exhibition is worthy of the attention of our best citizens. His exhibition at tho mechanics fair last year was tho largest ever made by any artist on this coa3t and was awarded over 1,200 in premiums. Mr. Schafer now is about to depart for Eu roie and he has been prevailed on by his brother artists not to throw his collec tion on the San Francisco market which would break prices in art. He has there fore shipped thorp to Portland whero he " ui-po-seu oi eigaiy paintings auu uas left twenty to bo closed out here at the mercy ol our citizens. Tho collection will be ready for inspection this oveniug and closed out to the highest bidder on to-night at eight o'clock sharp, re gardless of their value. The paintings will bo on inspection this evening at 15. S. Worsley's auction rooms. Thlrlj-tMO ilnmlreJ Tons Liirhttrasc. At a meeting of tho board of trado last night C. H. Prescolt, manager of tho Or egon Railway & Navigation company, made a formal offer to sluico out to sand bars at Martin's and "Walter's is lands and at St. Helens if tho citizens of Portland will pay half tho cost $4,000. Tho company through Mr. Prescott, of fers to furnish a steamer freo and pay half the charges of her operation dur ing twenty days, timo enough it is thought, to make deep channels through all of the bars. Mayor Gates also ten dered hia services to direct tho work, lormer siuiciug operations naving been nnder his superintendence. CfllXOOK'S LETTER. Writing from "tho Columbia river" under date of July 31, to tho California Grocer and Conner, "Chinook," discours ing of salmon, says: I notico that the London Grocer notes as "discreditable" tho practice of rela beling ordinary brands with fancy desig nations such as "Crown," "Royal," etc I havo been informed that some inferior salmon which is packed upon the Colum bia is relabeled by a large Liverpool firm, and that in consequenco tho quantity of salmon sold nnder tho brands noted above is usually inoro than double tho real volume of tho pack in queston. In that event the name of tho river upon which these brands are packed would seem exceedingly appropriate. I desire to note hero that the onus of guilt is not with the packer. It would seem that the Liverpool firm in question is at fault. At a timo when everything which is wrong is attributed to tho packer of salmon it is cheering to show that he is not alono in wrong doing. With a pack so small as tho one in question it would appear easy to detect any attempt at de ception. Is it not time to classify the Columbia river salmon packers? We hear a great deal nbout discrimination, but does it attain to any result? Our London friend3 who ought to attend to this seom remiss. How would tho fol lowing classification suit? First-class. Packers who have only one brand, who put up no other fish than salmon, and who usa their label only up on fish which they pack in their own canneries. Second-class. Packera who besides putting up fish in their own canneries purchase salmon which they know to be good, but upon which they use their own label. Third-class. Packers who put up salm on under several brands. The first only has the namo of tho packer. The second has1 a fancy name (McGinnes perhaps) and if there bo a third, as I know there is, tho third is geographically uncertain. Fourth-class. Speculators who claim to be packers who havo obtained a label which they are ready to put upon any thing which they can purchase at low figures. I might add another class, but as tho goods which they put up have frequently to bo removed from tho cans with a spoon (as a well known Brussels grocer reported last season,) I omit this grado becauso I am not writing about soup. Nowhere wo havo a clearly defined gradation affording amplo opportunity to protect the best salmon and to ensure tho purchaser against trash. But will it do any good to point out any means for guarding against imposition? This is tho ago of fraud. Salmon alono is not at fault. RUT IS IT DEAD BEYOND BESUBRECTIOJU Two stage hands entered tho room, supporting tho trembling figure of a weather- beaten joke. "Oh, Pm hero," ho hoarsely whispered, looking pitifully up into tho manager's faco with a won smile, "'ready to go on, even if it's for tho last time. Never disappoint tho pub lic," he murmered softly. Then his eyes closed and ho lay very still. The man ager bent over him and chafed bis hands, whilo tho others applied restoratives. "I'm better now," said tho aged Gag, as he sat up nnd gazed feebly about. "Ah! there's my cue. I'm going on. Let mo pass!" A second later wo heard from tho interlocuter: "And so you sav that you were eating an egg, while everybody else on board the vessel was starving?" "I was," replied tho End Man. " And whero did you get tho egg?" " Tho ship 'lay to,' nnd I got one." Then a mist oame before the eyes of tho old Gag. Ho staggered back into tho wings and fell. Sobbing Conundrums bore him tenderly to his dressing room and Weeping Jokes implored him to op en his eves. It was too late. The sound of laughter and applause camo from tho auuiionum. a sniuo oi lneuaoie sweet ness lit up his face and faded away for ever. The old Gag was dead. Chicago Inter-Ocean. THE YOUXG IDEA.
