PIONEER DAYS IX OREGOX.
I a. story ol iql is iuiu ui ncui j
Woods who was one of tne project
ors and builders of the Star of Ore
aoii, the first sea-going vessel built
on (he northwest coast. When the
schooner was well under way of con
struction, Woods went to Vancouver
to see if the doctor would let them
have such material for rigging, sails,
etc., as was indispensable to finish
her. The doctor had already been
pursuing a system of repression to-

cans, some of whom had como with
who had been crushed out by the
trade power of tbe Hudson Bay com
pany. Usit though poor m purse anu
reckless of lire, they would never sub
mit. On this occasion tho doctor
took rather a high and mighty tone
to Woods, and afieclcd to believe
that the vessel they were building
would be tho means of drowning its
owners, and the company would nev
or get its pay. At last Woods changed
his tone also, and said, "well, your
company does seem all-powerful here
inst now and it is true 1 am a very
poor man, but I can tell you, doctor,
poor as 1 am and look, 1 ve got an
uncle that is rich enough to buy up
many such companies as yours.
"Tut. tut, mt," savs the doctor,
"who is your undo that is so rich,
and vhat is his name?"
' We call him Uncle Sam," replied
Woods, "and he'll be along here some
of these days and will probably
change the condition of things some."
Sure enough. Commodore Wilkes'
expedition shortly afterwards sailed
in over the bar of tho Columbia, aud
Dr. AloLaushun probably remem
bered the effort that had on a previ
ous occasion been made to repress
the action of some of these very samo
men, when they determined to go to
California and get cattle of their own
and be no longer dependent on the
Hudson Bay company for the loan of
cows t milk. At that timo Mr. S lo
cum had sailed in over the bar, left
his vessel in the river and came up
into the Willamette valley, took part
in the first meeting held, at which
the bird of independence screamed a
little; advanced money to Rev. Jason
Lee for purposes or cattle purchase,
aud offered a passage down tho coast
to the parly going on this first Amer
ican cattle driving enterprise. The
wise doctor had not forgotten that
these men had nut only thus brought
cattle to supply the free settlers and
missionaries of western Oregon with
a start of cattle, but these men find-
insr a countryman of their own the
owner of 900 head of sheep m Sacra
mento valley, persuaded him lo start
half of them to Oregon in their com-
rauy. Air. Lease, the owner of the
sheep found no difficulty in disposing
of them when ho got here, members
of the Hudson Bay company becom
iug the largest purchasers. This was
onlv four years previous to the time
of Wood's talk. When tho doctor
got opportunity he stated to Commo
dore Wilkes the application that had
been made to him for supplies for the
little vessel aud asked him to examine
it, and say if men might safely risl
their lives by c.onglosra in such a
craft The commodore did so, and
pronounced the vessel safe to double
Cape Horn, and offered to becorao re
SDausible for her outfit
He only thus warranted the en
terprise of tho builders, but according
to Col. Nesmith's address of 18S0, ho
furnished them with .in anchor, haw
ser, nautical instruments, and an
American flag and a clearance. The
Star af Oregon sailed, made her port,
Yerba Buena (San Prancisco) in five
days, and was sold for 350 head of
cows. Her owner then became the
nucleus arouud which a second driv
ing enterprise gathered, consisting of
42 men who brought to the Willam
ette valley an aggregate of 1,250 head
of cattlej GOO head of mares, colt3,
horses and mules; and 3,000 head of
sheep. They were seventy-five days
on the way, says Col. Nesmith, aud,
on their arrival with their herds, the
monopoly in stock cattle came to an
end in Oregon. But that I fancy was
not the worst result, if Dr. McLaugh
lin refused to furnish the outfit for
the schooner in tho first place, as a
means of repressing American enter
prise, the furnishing of the instru
ments, flag and clearance, were new
points on Woods's side of the ques
tion, and altogether tended to show
Dr. McLaughlin that to interfere too
much with Simmons's enterprise
might aud probably would only stim
ulate it
It was certainly waste of time to
mention fear of death lo Woods as a
reason for refusing him what ho
wanted. He it was who, when driv
ing a logging team in the woods on
the west side of tho now city of Salem,
saw a panther catch and kill a deer,
and seizing up a club, drove the pan
ther oil, shouldered the venison and
drove on his team to the sawmill with
the buck on his back. Such men
don't scare well by possible conse
quences to themselves or any one
else. It is likely then that by 18M
Dr. John McLoughlin had begun to
perceive amongst the incoming immi
grants a spirit of self-reliance that
opposition only stimulated, and which
very likely drew his hearty admira
tion. It certainly soon was manifest
to Archibald Makinley and Dr. "W. p.
Tolmie, the latter of whom, as .early
as 1841 had, while on a visit to Scot
land, on being questioned by Robert
Chambers, ol,Chambers Edinburgh
Journal, as to what was necessary to
enable Britain to maintain her hold
on Oregon, indicated liberal dona-
tions of land, to free, self-directing,
self-reliant settlers and that journal
was speaking to tEe north British
people for such elements of power, at
the very time (September, l&ti) the
second largo wave of "home builders"
were moving down the Pacific slope.
