CZ) !Slt gaUg Ustovuun ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY AUGUST it. 18S5 THE POINT OF VIEW. "All good men agree far more than they disagree." This is an old saying, and a most true one. It is as true in religion as in anything else. One seldom falls into conversation with a thoroughly earnest and sincere man of whatever denomination, with out being impressed with the fact that, however much men may differ as to methods, as to this or that spe cial dogma, on all the great practical issues of life they are one. He be lieves in honesty and you believe in honesty. He believes in temperance, kindness, in doing good, and, howev er far you may fail in practice, in your heart, at least, you too, believe in these things. Human uaturo is much the same the world over. The human soul, with its wanfo and wish es, its struggles, its defeats, its aspir ations, its self-chidiugs, its relapses, its longings, its darkness and divinc ness, is much the same. As the sun lit summit of a mountain rises above the mists which envelop its base, so above the fog of opinion the human soul rises; and peak speaks to peak along the whole chain. "What are the churches working for? This, above all things: that God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven. That is their aim, certainly their ideal aim, however much they may fail in at taining it. Through devious roads, to the same goal, to the same summit. We all hope to meet at the top, though some of us are following the old paths, and some of us are search ing for new ones, and some of us, per haps, have lost our way entirely, and have only the sight of the summit to guide us iu our struggle up the moun tain side. Why not, then, it is argued, let each man go his own way, so long, at least, as in some way he is strug gling upward and not falling back? Denominational preaching is some times distasteful, even to those who may agree with" the preacher. For it is apt to emphasize differences, and make men seem enemies when they know they are friends. It is sport for outsiders, who enjoy the quarrel, careless of the issue. It is almost certain to be misunderstood by the thoughtless, the superficial, the su perstitious, the narrow minded. It is caught up by narrow minded peo ple of all sects and of no sect, and made the outlet for all manner of prejudice and personal spite. Men see in this world just what they have the power of seeing, and they will read everything with their own eyes; and a mau is interpreted not wholly according to what he really teaches, but half, at least, after the power of the interpreter. Few men have the power of perfectly comprehending or perfectly reporting. Speaking to most men i3 like looking into a con vex or concave mirror, which always gives back a distorted image. So true is this that it often becomes a reformer's most earnest prayer to be saved from his disciples. For a man can easily endure being misunder stood and misrepresented by his ene mies, but how hard to be continually misinterpreted by our friends! Churches and religion are ofttimes confounded in the minds of those who think they arc one and the same. Churches are aids, necessary adjuncts as the aqueduct, the water pipe, is for the life giving liquid that flows refreshingly through it .1 PJSXXY SAVED. Makikg and spending, saving and .hoarding these keep the world busy. The hoards last only for a lifetime, and usually take wing when they fall to the next of kin. Then the process of making begins again, and it de pends on the nature of the individual whether the hard-earned dollars go into the old stocking and the savings bank or whether they find their way into circulation by ready expenditure. There is danger in both paths. Thrift carried to the extent of niggardliness is only less contemptible than lavish- ness which oversteps honesty. The virtue of living within one's means is classed among "minor morals," but it often takes real pluck to do it. In this country, especially, where people ape each other in arith metical progression, the temptation to outrun one's income is incessant. "A man's a man for a1 that"' is all very well in poetry and song ; and the sentiment is, perhaps, helpful to the honest man in jeans, who cannot afford broadcloth. But, in prosaic, everyday life, the clo.thes, the house, the living, are made the tests by which to judge a man. Fight it all we may, the fact remains, senseless and rasping as it is. There is no surer way of saving the pennies than by paying honest debts. Because, if one pays as he goes, he cannot exceed his income. Wants are modified, and Inxuries are discovered. Little by little, the margin widens; and there is a chance to enlarge one's expenditures or one's bank account, or one's charities. Thrift, honesty and generosity are quite compatible, and are a trio that fill homes with harmony. Ax almanac three thousand years old, fcttnd in Egypt, is iu the British Museum. It is said to be tho oldest in the world. It was found on the body of an Egyptian, who had doubt less regarded it with as much rever ence as he did the Egyptian Bible, "The Book of the Dead;" and in deed it is strongly religious iu char acter. The days are written in red ink, and under each is a figure fol lowed by threo characters, signifying the probable state of the weather for that day. Like other Egyptian man uscripts it is written on papyrus. It is not in its integrity but was evi dently torn up beforo its owner died. It clearly establishes the date of the reign of Barneses the Great, but con tains nothing elso of value. Stemk:s going through the Suez canal must stop whenever the pilot gives the word; and when the sun goes down, no matter where the vessel is, whether at a "station" or not, it must tie up at the bank. There is no risk in this, as no other steamer will attempt to go on after sundown. The pilots are a fine set of men, of different nations,- En glish, French, Greek, Italian, etc. They dress in a simple uniform, some thing like naval officers in undress. NEW TO-DAY.
