m F She Satftt Syrian, ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY AUG UST 7. 16S5 VEXUS AND JUPITER. Ox present evenings Yenus and Ju piter may be seen almost side by side sparkling in the western twilight. To the naked eye there is not much difference to be perceived between Jupiter and Yenus. But in a good telescope the difference is very great, and the astronomer knows that it would take 1,400 globes like Yenus to equal the bulk of Jupiter. Yet Yenus is only a trifle smaller than the earth. These two worlds now shining almost side by side in the sky are still more different in their condition. They represent two different conditions in planetary history. Jupiter not withstanding its enormous size, isi speaking in a geological sense, a mere baby beside Yenus or the earth. The telescope shows that its huge globe is still in the throes of that age of fire and vapor which precedes the formation of a planetary crust, and when the observer understands the magnitude of the forces at work there is hardly any phenomenon in the heaven 3 so awe-inspiring as a telescopic view of the drifting, toss ing and whirling surface of Jupiter. Yenus, on the other baud, appears to be in very much the same condition as the earth, possessing a cool and rigid surface, wrinkled and diversi fied with mountains and plains, and enveloped by an atmosphere in which float clouds like those that refresh tho earth. The study of the planets has never been pursued with so much industry and success as at present. Astronomers arc just beginning to understand that it is possiblo for them to learn much about the past and f u lure of tho earth by studying the present condition of its sister planets. "Whoever looks at Jupiter and Yenus in the western skies sees two worlds, one having all tho phases of the earth's history since it was "without form and void" still bofore it, and tho other as old in a planetary sense as the globe we tread, and, per haps, possessing as wonderful a his tory since life appeared upon its sur face. In a hurried quotation from "Win. Shakespeare, Esq., with whose pres ent addrcs3 we are not familiar, Tun Astorian last "Wednesday, used the expression "still harping on mine un cle." More exact quotation would have been, "still harping on my daugh ter." As that is the only mistake Tnx Astorian thinlcs it has made during an entertaining discussion with tho Oregonian, it hastens to correct it be fore its attention is directed to it by its astute contemporary whoso lack of tangible argument worth answer ing is so painfully apparent to those who fain would bo its friends. There are annually made in the United States about 3,250,000,000 ci gars, of which number Kew York city produces 700,000,000, -with a round valuation of $25,000,000, it be ing the largest cigar-manufacturing center in the world, not excepting Cupa, which produces annually 47, 900,000 cigars for importation to this country, or nine-tenths of all the ci gars imported from foreign countries to the United States. Tom Fitch of California aud Ari zona, is in Baker City in this state, and will probably locate there. He and Henry Edgerton arc the two best talkers on the coast and if he stays in Baker City long enough to be elected to the legislature, as ho surely -would be, the Oregon legisla ture would never dream of adjourn ing senator or no senator, while his eloquence held out. The Washington Post says that more than 82,000,000 has been paid to John Boach on account of the four neW cruisers. The article shows that not only the Dolphin but the Atlanta, Boston, and Chicayo have been near ly paid for. The following figures are given as authentic: Doli'liinJ Atlanta! The Canadian Pacific lacks 200 miles of being in daily traffic opera tion from end to end. Forty miles of road are about ready to turn over to the operating department, and 1G0 miles remain yet to build. Thero are few towns in England under 20,000 inhabitants that have a daily paper. There are few towns in America of 20,000 inhabitants that have not from two to five papers. The Missouri RepuWican, a staunch Democratic paper thinks that if old Henry A. Wise could bo resur rected long enough to see his son, John S.. running for governor of Yir- ginia on the Republican ticket he would go back to his grave feeling that he had not hanged the lamented John Brown altogether in vain.
