THE TAMOUS PONY EXPEESS. Twenty-five years ago, settlers . starting for the far west, with their I heavily-laden wagons, knew that the juuiuu.) wouiu ocenpy six monms ol hard travel, and might involve many dangers of varied character chiefly from hostile Indians, prairie fires aud rattlesnakes. Once starlpd on that far journey, many weay mouths must elapse ere auy tidings could reach them from the home thev had left. Great was the excitement when a company of fearless, determined men announced their resolution to carry letters from the shores of the Atlan tic to those of tho Pacific in fourteen days. The feat was deemed impos sible. Nevertheless, the Central Overland California and Pike's Peak express was duly organized, the vast j expanse of country right across the great continent was divided into runs of sixty miies, and at each terminus rude log huts were erected as stations and stables for men and beast?. The latter were strong, swift ponies, selected for their hardiness and great powers 01 endurance, and the riders were all picked men, ex perienced scouts and trappers, noted even in that region of keeni hard ridiug men for courage and good horsemanship; and manv a time must both have been tried to ihe uttermost in the course of those terribly long and awfully lonesome rides "across the trackless prairie, continually in danger of attack, by day or by night, by wild Indiaus or highway robbers. Once a week an express messenger started from either side of the great continent. From the first moment to tho last, not a second must be lost. As long as the pony conld gallop, gallop eh must; and the eager beasts seemed as keen as their riders, and scarcely needed the crnel spnr to nrge them on. For sixty miles at a stretch they must keep np their ut most speed, and when at length the goal is reached, where the next mes senger was waiting in the saddle, ready to start without one minnte's delay, the precious letter-bag was tossed from one po3tmnn to the other, and ere tho wearied incomer had even dismounted, his successor had started on his onward way. Then pony and man might rest and feed, and rest again, till tho return of the messenger with a re-filled letter-bag, which was warranted to ac complish its journey of upwards of 2,000 miles in 240 hours. (The rail way on the New York side being al ready constructed as far as St. Joseph, that station was the eastern point to whicli tho Pony express had to run.) Tho Pony express was continued for two years, accomplishing its work with amazing regularity, and involv ing many a feat of splendid riding and wild adventure. It proved, how ever a ruinous failnre, from a com mercial point of view, and the com pany colVipsed with a deficit of S200,000. "Wanted 'cm Whole. He had just floated over and hadn't landed long enough to shake the salt water out of his blooming ears, but knew a thing or two, you know, and knew what lie wanted and how to get it, yon know. He fixed the waiter with his eye-glass and that's tho only way ho ever did fix him and said: Look here, I say, I want me breakfast, you know, "and I'm agoin' to have two ole eggs, yon know; bring them first and I'll tell you w'at helse, you know." And by" and by the waiter came back with two boiled eggs. They were blue with ago and iudigestion, and had been marked for the tomb ever since tho pedestal was paid for. Their offense was rank, and they would havo taken precedence of the Emperor of Babylon. "Dese yer de olest aigs we got", sa'j,' ex plained the waiter, 'May's a conplo de cook found in do bottom of a bar rel dat was left over from last sum mer. Ho says ho 'lowed to sell 'em to do book-binders, bnt if do genlmn liko3 his aigs ole he kin have 'em. Tell yon, sah, der do bo33, for olo aigs." And the guest had to wait until hi3 baggago arrived before he could find tho "h" ho wanted. Tho IMorcy letter forgery was never satisfactorily brought home to tho parties responsible for it; but at least one of those engaged in making it effective is undergoing punishment for his perjury. He was sentenced in 1SS1 to eight years' imprisonment, and Gov. Hill has just refused to pardon him. That forgery was one of tho worst crimes ever com mitted for a political purpose, and no one of any influence seems to have any sympathy for the villains en gaged in it. Dcslroj that Sln. One may feel that ho is getting old, but ho naturally dislikes that any thing about his appearance should adviso others of the fact Tet nothing does this so effectually as thin and falling hair. No woman wants to marry a man, and business firms hes itate to employ a man, who shows this fatal sign. Parker's Hair Balsam is worth to you, in this regard, more than its weight in diamonds. Uso it, and havo plentiful and glossy hair. Many have had every trace of gray ness removed and bald spots covered by using a single bottle. - The Multnomah Railway company has executed a mortgage to the Cali fornia Safe Deposite and Trust Co. of San Francisco, as trustee, which has been filed in the county clerk's office in Portland, to secure $70,000 on tho railroad company's bonds, with which to construct a railroad from that city to Vancouver. Awriterinthe forthcoming Century will discuss tho questron, ""What shall be done with, our ex-presidents?'' We don't see that anything need be done with them.
