ASTORIA, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, J 885.
A TERRIBLE CYCLONE.
Sweeping
Death aad Destruction
Philadelphia.
Over
PiirfcADELrniA, August ;$. A ler
riGc cyclone, sweeping up tho Dela
ware river this afternoon, strnck tins
city near Greenwich point, demolish
ing a portion of the works o the
Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing
company, and injuring several ot tue
employes. Then it took a course
across the river, wrecking the river
steamer Major Iteybold and the fer
ryboat Peerless. The storm blew
Pilot Emory Townsend aad Captain
Eugene lleybold. of the steamer lley
bold, into "tho river, drowning tho
former and pjiu fully injuring the
captain. Thr Peerless was swept
clean almost to the water's edge.
When tho Major lleybold was struck
it was seen that the cyclone's im
mense force came from its rotary
motion. Several people were thrown
through a hole to the lower deck, and
all the upper works were swept away
like chaff. Tho confusion among the
passengers was indescribable, and
several jumped into the river, but it
is believed that all were rescued.
"While the cyclone was upon the
vessel everything was as black as the
blackest night bofas were broken
to splinters, and carpets torn to
shreds in tho cabin, as if they had
been paper. Tho cyclone lasted
about a minute, and after it passed
the vessel rolled and pitched fearful
ly in the groat waves, and came near
swamping.
Tho storm then passed over to tho
Jersey side, striking John Dialogues
shipyards and destroying the build
ings of tho establishment Then it
took a course along the Now Jersey
river, demolishing all tho buildings
in its path up to tho bridge at Cam
den. At this point the cyclone took
an easterly course to Camden, and
that part of tho 23lh ward of Phila
delphia known as Ricbinund. In its
ravages in Camden scores of dwelling
houses were unroofed and some of
them thrown down, and tha damage
to business property along the river
front is enormous. Hundreds of
families are rendered homeless, and
one victim, Charles Daizey,wa3 killed
outright
At the American dredging com
pany's wharf another, Harry Stoven3,
had a leg cut oft by a itymg pieco of
timber and will probably die.
The track of tho storm through
Eichmond, marked with death and
destruction, was almost due north
from the Port Bichmond coal wharves.
About 1M dwelling houses were
wrecked, or so badly damaged as to
be rendered unut for habitation, and
200 families were driven from their
homes to be cared for by neighbors
A number of persons wero serious
ly, aud some fatally injured. A girl
cf ten years, Lizzie McVeigh, was
willed at her home, 172 Melvalo street,
m sight of her mother, who was her
self pinioned to tho floor by falling
rafters a few feet from tho dying
child.
The cyclone is describsd by those
who witnessed its progress in the riv
er, as an immense black, cone-shaped
cloud, with tho apex rosting upon the
water and tho base mingling with
rain clouds which hung in dense
masses from tho sky. It is impossble
yet to estimate tho amount of dam
ago done.
John Dialoguo of Camden, whose
works were destroyed, says: "Look
ing out of the door upon tho river I
saw the tornado's approach. I could
see the buildings of the Philadelphia
salt works on tho Philadelphia side,
going like chaff. Then tho storm
struck the Major lleybold, which was
partially abreast of my place. Por
tions of her upper works wore hurled
fully 400 feet into tho air. a tremen
dous roar preceded it. The moving
fury resembled a denso mas3 ot roll
ing black smoke, and it traveled with
in ten feet of the surface of tho rivor.
A singular phenomenon was noticed,
not only by myself but by all my ineu
in the yards. This was a huge ball
of fire" fully ten feet in diameter,
which swiftly accompanied the storm
cloud. I saw this ball ot fire explode
about 250 yards north of me, with a
report so tcrnhc as to shako tho very
foundations of buildings in my yard.
Following this came a number of ex
plosions, but with loss force. All the
sky to tho eastward was unusually
bright, and had a sort of rainbow ap
pearance. In fact, this was one of
the most remarkable sights of the
kind that I had ever Eeen. The ball
of fire which exploded, I am satisfied,
played the mischief at tho American
dredging company's place."
Short & Harb's threo story mill on
Salmon street, Bichmond, this city,
was completely wrecked and scat
tered in all directions. There were
about eighty people employed at the
mill, moEt of them young girls, and
the effect was to throw them into a
panic. A large number jumped from
the second story windows, and were
only slightly injured, while others
were hurled to the ground with tho
falling walls, and strnck by flying
timbers and bricks.
Before tho storm the air was filled
wilh flying debris, and people, seeing
the awful sight, fled in terror by hun
dreds to their cellars. The cyclone
lasted between four and five minutes.
and was marked with terrific puffs
and roars. It is a singular fact that
flat-roofed houses suffered most The
wind, with tho greatest ease, catching
them unaer tno cornice, lutea tnem
as though they wero sheets of paper.
There is hardly an instance where a
mansard roof building was wrecked.
So great was the violence of tho
wind that the fronts and sides of the
houses andlwy windows were ma3hed
in as if they were eggshells. Boofs
were carried hundreds of yards away,
shade trees were mowd down like
platoons of soldiery on a battle field
and great monster trees that had
stood tho storms of years were up
rooted or broken off like pipe3tem3.
Tho eccentricities of the wind could
bo seen on every side. Bnildinga
which it would seem an ordinary
storm would demolish, and which
were in tho direct path of the storm.
were spared, while their neighbors
modern structures of brick would bo
gutted or wrecked outright.
Behm:?, Aug. 3 Tho North Ger
man Gazette, in replying to the article
in the Paris Temps in favor of in
creasing the French cavalry force on
tho Bhino frontier, says: "Despite
ail of Germany's efforts to mintain
peace, it is evident that Franco in
tends to have war, and is only waiting
for the occasion." The statement
caused a sensation, as the Gazette's
political articles are usually inspired
by Bismarck.
The Iron Iaterests.
Whether we should finally decide
on Protection or Free Trade in iron
may mako considerable difference to
the capitalists and ironworkers. To
the person who suffers from debility
and languor tho most important ques
tion is the proper amount of iron in tho
blood. If it is not present thero will
be misery, faintness, weakness and
wrotchedne33. The only reliable iron
preparation for tho blood is Brown's
Iron Bitters, which enriches, strength
ens and renews tho whole system.
