Tho Portland Journal of Commerce of tho 1st has an article entitled "Portland's Direct Foreign Exports," and a very good article it is, but it would be interest ing to know whero tho Carnarvon Caitle and Haidee come in under "Portland's' foreign exports, unless tho Journal of Commerce has struck tho Oregonian,s racket and makes the "Columbia river of commerce" start at Portland. Something Abont the Funniest 1'laj of the the Day, Which Will Soon be Seen at Rosa' Opera Home. It will bo a pleasing announcement for our Ihoater-goera to learn that "Tho Pri vate Secretary," which is spoken of as tho most amusing play of tho day, and which has been such an extraordinary success, not only in England and Ger many, but in this country as well, is to bo seen hero on August 17th. Tho Mad ison Square Theater company, including W. K. Gillette, M. A. Kennedy, Frank Tannehill, Jr.,Fanuy Addison, Alice Sher wood, and others that appeared in the original production, appear hero for tho first time. "Tho Private Secretary" is a farcer in threo acts, abounding m complications which arise from tho desire of Mr. Cat termole to have his nephew, Douglas, sow his wild oats. This ho at once pretends to do. He is inspired with tho happy thought of entering tho houFo of Mr. Marsland, whero ho impersonates tho private secretary already engaged. Ho makes it his business to fall in love with tho first pretty girl ho finds in the estab lishment. In sowing his wild oats ho comes in contact with various female members of the family, ono of whom is a spinster whose sensitive soul yearns for spiritual manifestations. When Kev. Kobt Spaulding (W. H. Gilletto), tho private secretary, arrives, he is forced to perform tho part of tho medium, not, however, with any clearness as to his function. Tho excitement and absurd ities of this particular sceno set tho house in great turmoil. Tho private sec retary doubts his own sanity. Every thing is at cross purposes; all aro drawn into the whirlpool of contradictions and misunderstanding. As may be imagined from tho story of it, tho play is full of farcial fun, and tho rcsponso a continual roar around tho house. Spaulding is a "clerical error," and sets everybody with whom ho comes in contact to blundering about him. Ho is a booby, always in the wrong place, and tho dilemma is funny enough with out dialogueand really too ridiculous for words. It must bo seen to bo epprecia- ieu, anu inai it win do wen periormea, n casual glance will convince almost any ono that this company which appears hero, will comprise an unequaled cast of characters: RCV. Tho Progress of tho Photographic Art. Everyone remembers tho important misery of "sitting for ono's picture" in the days of boyhood or girlhood. The torturo to tho sitter of old was some thing very real. If tho fussy "artist" would only have permitted his victim to sit as he sat at home, there would have been littlo to complain of. Evidently, howerer, thero was one lock for everyday life and another for the "studio." Tho man who never opened a book from one year's end to the other, stood bolt up right, close by a marble column, with his finger inside of a copy of "Locko on the Human Understanding." The moth er of a family, in terror lest her heated face should "come put frightful," or agonized by the amblings of a fly across her nose, sat glaring at a spot on the wall, her countenance rigid with a wood en smile only seen in photographs, while tho man of science waited, watch in band, for tho fatal moment when the cap was to descend, and all waq over. Peo plo dressed to bo photographed, and dressed so fearfully unlike nature, that when their "doppelgangers" appeared m the photographer's case, it was regarded by their acquaintances as a sign of supe rior ncutenesa to recognizo tho prototype. The man with whom half tho town were familiar in hi3 shirt sleeves, looked ex tremely stiff and unhappy as ho stood by tho regulation marble pillar of painted fir in his Sunday clothes, with his fore finger in tho property copy of Mr. Locke's erudite treatise. Tho photographer of the old school fixed the person to bo taken in front of a bull's eye, and requested him to look "as ho usually did." Then with a yiew to securo this end an implement of torturo called a "head rest" was fixed on his oc ciput, evidently under tho impression that this curve of iron was tho usual ap pondago of an arm chair. A second or two later, tho artist declared with well feigned resignation that ho must "poso you again," anu posing in his vocabulary always meant pulling down your shirt cuffs, laying your right hand in an un natural position over a shaky littlo table, propping up a lock of your hair to make it resemble tho typical portrait of Byron. Then after ono or two final pulls and pushes, and easings of tho bust backward nnd forward and sidoways, as sculptors manipulate their clay models, tho "sit ter," heated, irritable and perspiring, was requested to "look pleasant." At last tho cap was taken off, the watch pro duced, and a minute of torture, it seemed hours, inflicted on the man who, in a mo ment of good naturo and ambition, re solved to "bo takoa." Tho result wo all know. A portrait taken in a dentist's chair would have been as pleasing. The only satisfaction a cynic got out of the busi ness was that tho chap with the lens did not get off scot-free. Before he poured the collodion on the plato which had to be so laboriously cleaned, and then dinned it in the mysterious bath, nnd re treated into the dark room with it, and ' dipped it again, ho generally managed to leavo some traco of the operation on his person. A photographer of the wet t process times could always be known by ! his fingers. As for tho rare amateur, this rash man, at least during tho early stages ofhis novitiate, had to seclude himself from society, -as his hands were stained beyond tho powcrof chemicals to cleanse them. All this is now yery ancient history. It seems as- out of date to hear people talking of the collodion process as it is to ' read of Niepco experimenting with tho ' bitumen of Judea, or Dagcerrc rendering ! his silver plates sensitive by the aid j rendered miraculously sensitive by eela- tino mixed with bichromate of potash havo revolutionized tho whole art. It is ' no longer photography, but photoglypliy. ' dealer ready for use, without tho opera-' tor requiring to touch them, and, indeed, ' so sensitive that if touched they aro in-' q eaa. o VVn . jared, and if exposed to tho faintest ray 'ill fll fcl ' I I of light they are spoiled. Then, at the' I 1 ina 111 I IT II M ' fitting moment, ono is slipped into tho . v x camera, a littlo eaten is raised, a cmck is heard, nnd quick as the twinkling of an eye, a view is secured, There w uoj iroauie; scarcely any inecuauioai skiu is exercised. Practically, tho operation is instantaneous, since a passing train, a galloping horse, or a bird in flight can be pictorially fixed.
