BRJBVl Ml I IDIS I I II 13 THE I ?e BLOOD UNDER THE MICROSCOPE. "The only msiance on record -when the blood of two persons -was com- parea in a criminal inai, sum ur. Piper, the microscopic expert, to the San Francisco Call, "was in a mur der case in Chicago. Tho compar ison settled the innocence of the woman on trial for her life. A come ly woman, with S'20,000, married a man in Chicago, and placed her snug little sum in bis business. In the course of time he began to abuse her, and fiually sho decided to apply for a di vorce! The doublo calamity of losing a woman to beat and withdrawal of herS20,O00 from bis business made the brute furious, aud next morning he was found dead in one corner of his bed chamber, a bullet having gone through his hcait Ilis wife was found wounded in another part of the room. She said that her hus band had come homo the night be fore in a rage and began to abuse her "while she was in bed; that he hit her on iho head with the butt of his revolver while her head was on the pillow and spattered blood over the liuenj that she jnmped up, and be shot her, inflicting a slight flesh wound in her side. She then rushed at him, and snatching the re volver from him, shot him through the heart He reeled to the corner where he was fouud and died. Tho prosecution did not believe her story, and set up tho theory that she shot him while he was asleep, and dragged him to the corner, and then inflicted thevwouud on herself. The carpet where tho dead man lay was satur ated with blood. According to the theory of the prosecution, tho blood on the pillow was his also. I put the section of the pillow with the blood upon it under the microscope and drew on a card-board tho shape of tho corpuscles, enlarged about 2,000 diametres. I then put the blood on the carpet under tlie microscope in tho samo way. The comparison was won derful. The corpuscles on tho pillow were bright, round aud clean. They were beautiful. Tho corpuscles on the carpet were largo and disfigured, the result of disease. Comparison settled that question at once. The blood corpuscles were as different as day aud night, and sustained the woman's account of tho shooting. Sho was acquitted on that and other evidence. As between human blood and dog's blood, tho microscope en ables the expert to determine precise ly whether a specimen is from a hu man being or a dog. lint it is im possible to determine between human blood and a hog's blood. This fact convicted ono man that T know of. Ho claimed that iho blood on his clothes was dog's blood. I was ablo to show that it was not dog's blood; but if he had said it was hogs blood I could not havo contradicted the statement." RAISING THE DEAD. Dr. Richardson, in a recent num ber of the Aseleprad, suggests some serious reflections on tho questions of what is death? When does death occur? May life be restored after actual death? By combining "artifi cial circulation" with artificial respir ation a dog was restored to life ono hour and five minutes after being killed by an overdose of chloroform, tho heart being perfectly still, cold andxassing into rigidity. Animals that Lave been killed by suffocation, the heart and other viscera displayed by partial dissection, wero so far brough t into a st ate of muscul ar irrita bility that tho experiment was stopped from motives of humanity, lest the mutilated body should return to con scious sentient life. Frops roisoned by nitrate of amj 1 were restored after nine days of apparent death; in one case after 6igus of putrefaction change had commenced. Various methods of effecting these resuscita tions are described, the most original and effective being that of pumping warm denbriuated and oxygenized blood into an artery in such a man ner that the stroke of the pump shall correspond with the natural pulsa tions of tli2 artery, asd to the stroke of the heart, which is thus awakened to its customary work. Tho action of peroxide of hydrogen in reanimat ing the blood and restoring animal heat in a really dead body is quite startling. JJr. ittcliardsons paper appears to justify the conclusion that a drowned or suffocated man is not hopelessly dead so long as the bodily organs roniain nninjnred by violence or disease, and tho b.'ood remains sufficiently liquid to be set in motion artificially, and supplied with a little oxygen to start tho chemical move ments of lire. IiEwiSTON, July 31. A messenger brings tho following from L. P. Brown, dated Mt. Idaho, July 30: "War is raging among tho Indians on the Clearwater, which may lead to an outbreak of the tribe. Nino Pipes and Aleck were killed to-day by a re turned hostile The trouble was about some property. Hostiles have have been on Salmon river threaten ing trouble. A very uneasy feeling exists among the people on the prai ries, they fearing an uprising of the tribes." In a letter from Grangeville it was said that a brother of one of the murdered Indians came there and wanted to buy a pistol to slay his brother's murderer. There is great excitement Mayor Tjatrobo of Baltimore, in a public card endorses Bed Star Cough Cure as a harmless, effective discov ery, free from the objections of other cough mixtures, THE rUGSLEY-JTcINTOSII QUARREL. Under dale of July 23th, the Wil apa correspondent of the Pacific Journal says: Henry Pugsly had a preliminary examination last Saturday beforo Justice Skidmora and was acquitted on the grounds of excusable homi cide. The testimony, as near as I could learc, was substantially as fol fel fol eows: Pugsly and. Mcintosh had some words earlier in the day, and Pug3ley told Mcintosh that ho did not want to fight him. After that Mcintosh and Hastings had a quar rel, and Mcintosh came at Hastings with an axe, whereupon Hastings stood him off with a coudIo of wedgo axes and told him not to come any fnrther. Hastings then said he would quit, and Pugsly said he would quit too. Mcintosh said to him "No you won't. Go back aud go to work.'' Pugsly tried to pass and Mcintosh rushed upon him with a shovel and Pugsly dodged down. As he dodged, ho picked up an axe that was lying in tho chute, aud raised up and shoved the axe at Mcintosh. The axe struck Mcintosh ou the left arm, cutting through the arm and thence diagonally down be tween the rib3 and entering the heart, killing him almost instantly. It seems that Pugsly was in a place whero he could not get out of the way and was forced to defend him self. If he had not dodged just as he did, the shovel would have severed his head from his body. WANT THEIR 3IONEY BACK. A meeting of parties interested in payments made upon lands of tho Oregon Central railroad company was held at the St Charles hotel, West- port AV. 1., a few days since. Sam uel L. Lovel wa3 elected chairman and Bobert James secretary. Tho chairman addressed tho meeting, stating that its object was to tako concerted action to recover the amounts paid io the company upon their lands, which were now forfeited; that tho company was now iu tho hands of. a receiver and the agents refuse to refund the money made as payments upon land, us agreed in the contracts. A suit would be nec essary in order to compel such pay ment If tho parties interested would uuite the percentage of cost would bo small; therefore he sug gested that a committee be appointed to ascertain the amount of claims that would be willing to unite in pressing this suit, and then the per centage of said claims that it would cost to conduct tho suit to a termin ation. A motion wa3 carried that the chairman constitute a committee of one to take such action as neces sary lo carry out such suggestion. Tlie number of claims presented was 122, aggregating the sum of $1,780. Tho meeting was then adjourned, subject to the call of the chairmin. Can't be Beat." Thjs comes from one whoso ca3e is ono .among thonsauds. Mr. A. B. At the com ing meeting at Gasticu, Prince Bis marck will attend the Empeior Wil liam, and Count Kaluok will attend the Emperor Francis Joseph The meeting, therefore, will be of great interest Destroy that Sica. One may feel that he is getting old, but ho naturally dislikes that any thing about his appearanco should advise others o'f tho fact Yet nothing does this so effectually as thin' and falling hair. No woman wants to marry a man, and business firms hes itate to employ a man, who shows this fatal sign. Parker's Hair Balsam is worth to you, in this regard, more than its weight iu diamonds. Use it, and havo plentiful and glossy hair. Many have had every trace of gray ness removed and bald spots covered by using a single bottle. mi Capt James Coogan, of New York, is negotiating for the purchase of the house at Point Pleasant Ohio, in which General Grant was boru, with a view of having it set up in Central Park.
