AN EASTERN FACTORY. A contributor to the 2s ew York Evening Post recently gave this in side view of au eastern shoe factery: I have visited one of our eastern fchoe factories and examined the num berless details of vork tbrongh which the materials have to go until tbo last finish is put on a very grace ful pair of lady's button boots. Ex cepting the cutting of the pieces, ev erything is done by machinery, even to the sewing on of the buttons one of the latest Yankee inventions. The packing expenses (wooden case and a paper box in which each pair is pack ed;. They are retailed probably at SLVj, ami are good, solid, honest leather goods; no paste work. The earnings of the operatives are the average paid for this kind of work, and certainly twice as high as paid in England, or anywhere in Europe. As every tiling is "piecework, the oper atives cau earn high wages only when llicy possess an amount of effi ciency and skill, wliich are acknowl edged characteristics of eastern op orathes, male and female. The degree or intelligence and nerve power which the faces of the oper atives show would hardly be found iu any factory outside of America, and is the only answer we can give to the oft-repeated question, "How if other nations adopt our methods?" ilany an English shoemaker, attract ed by the high earnings of operatives in American factories, had to give up the contest, as he could not earn half the wages of an American with the same tools iu the same factory. TRANSFER OF FLOUR 3IANUFAdTRE. The United States has become a great manufacturing nation. AVe are striving to-day to conquer anil obtain possession of the great markets of the world. This is becoming restricted from year to year, because new states and territories are rapidly creating new centers of manufactures. A fevr years ago, the great center of flour manufacture was in what was called the Geiiessee country, with Roches ter as the chief city of the flour trade. Now the center of this interest has been transferred to Minneapolis, on the west side of St. Anthony falls. It is probable that tho central interest will be maintained thero for many years. But it cannot be permanent, for the wheat-producing center is con stantly pushed further into the north west. But at Minneapolis the great improvements in the milling of wheat have originated. Better flour and more of it was the result. The roller process ha3 taken the place of the grinding process by burr millstones. Hereafter the center of flour manu facturing will steadily follow the cen ter of wheat production. That is in evitable. A few years ago this theory would have been sharply questioned. But railroads have penetrated all the great wheat-growing districts. "Where fuel is cheap thero will bo no diffi culty in erecting flour mills in tho more important wheat-growing dis tricts. There will, of course, be many local centers of flour manufacturing because at present wheat-growing is extended over a large arei. They have been making new figures on ihc coal supplv, and "it is now be lieved that it will' take 11,000 years to exbaust-tho supply even if yon don't sift your ashes. YOVXG 3IK. N-KI:AI THIS.
