TUTTS Hikk HI B3 SI Fk. DAKOTA'S GIRL FARMERS. Youn; Woruea Who Own the Land TLey Cultivate. MiTCifEi,!, D.T., July 25. Most of Ui2 young ladies who own and work farms in this territory hare a great abhorrence of notoriety, becauso ot tho number of bores that are sure to bunt them up, either in person or by letter. A floating paragraph about a young woman who has a farm near this place, which appeared in the newspapers about a month ago, brought her more than a hundred letters inside of three months. These missives were of every variety under the sun, and included nearly every thing, from ah offer of advice on wheat-planting to propositions of marriage. While speaking with her yesterday on these subjects she said: lI had some of the funniest letters you evsr read. About a dozen of them were from men who wanted to marry, evidently a lazy, shiftless lot, for not one of them could spell, and in every case tho letters indicated ignoranco even of the common court esies of life. They were principally from widowers, and all began by say ing that they had been thinking of going to Dakota for a long time. I suppose they all thought I would jump at tho chance to get them. I never answered any one of them. Some of tho letters were from old ladies in the eastern and middle states who wanted to give ma good advice, and others were from girls, widows and old maids, asking how I managed to get along, and what was necessary for them to do in order to get themselves established as well as 1 am. I answered some of these, and two or threo have written to me since.'' uTho worst nuisances I havo to deal with," she continued, are the men, young and old, "who come out to seo me. They are abont the toughest lot I ever heard of. I have had to drive somo of them oil the place, as they seemed determined to stay. I suppose it is so everywhere, but it seems strange that a womtn can't go ahead and accomplish some thing for herself without being wor ried to death by all the old btnnmere, cranks, widowers and dnde3 within a thousand miles. Ono young fellow came to see me last spring, and after following me around a sixty-acre lot twice, just becauso I treated him de cently, actually had the nervo to ask me if my thoughts ever turned to matrimony. 1 told him that they never had, though I didn't know what might happen if I came across just the right person. That seemed to help him along a little, and he asked what sort of a person it would have lo be. I told him I didn't know, and called his attention to the fact that my off horse was a little off his feed. "'How would I do?" said the young fellow, and I savs: 'If I had a ten-acre lot full of fel lows like yon I wouldn't lake tho trouble to scrape you up with a horse-rake.' "One elderly man from Pennsylva nia came hero last fall and, stopping in town, he would drive ont here ov er' day. He began at first by pre tending he unit a deep religious in terest in me. Then ho wanted to know howl stood financially, howl got my farm, and how much' I made from it. It took him several days to get what he wanted, and then he in timated a wish on his part lo take tea with me. I tried to get rid of him, but he was old enough to be my father, and was so decent about things generally that! finally con sented. After tea ho took a couple of chairs out on the east side of the house, and when we had both seated ourselves, he said: " 'I have been thiukin" for a leni: lime about marrying again. I've got " 'Now. you stop right where you are,' said I, 'or I'll set tho dog" on you. If that's the nature of your re marks, we'll adjourn this meeting right here. I've got work to do. and I don't want anv fnnliny firnnnrt ' "You never saw a man git like he did. He never said a word, and have never seen him since. "I rather like some of these youn chans from tho eitv. fhnnrli fh kind that are not making love, but wno are always wanting lo help you. They think they are so strong, and when anvthinc is to be dnnn thnv nrp so quick to take hold; but, gracious goodness, I could break a good many of them in two, if I wanted to. They are good boys, though, and I'll never say anything against them." This young lady, who is as brown as a berry and as solid as a russet, with all tho spryness and grace of tho gentlest of her ser, owns 1G0 acres of good land, and has it under a pretty fair stato of cultivation. Somo old farmers might make fun ot a few things, and she readily admits that she has much to learn, but she manages to make her living and con siderably more. Her mother lives with her. and with tho assistance of a stout ' maid-of-all-work, they get along without any male help. Before tho young woman camo hero she tried to make her living as a dressmaker in a small Michigan town, but sho failed at that, and finally determined to come hero and settle down on a farm. She laughingly says she does not Know now long sne -will Keep at it, and there are those who suspect that ueiore Jong somebody will come whose suit will not bo m vmn. TJp near Blunt there are two young sisters, not more than 25 vnrs nld. j who own and work a farm of 200 acres. They went on their claim be fore there was a building of any kind there, taking a tent along to live in, and, with the assistance of a carpen ter for a few days, they built their liouso and sheds and made ready for farming operations. These girls came from an Illinois town, where they had heard sfories of the pro ductiveness and cheapness of Dakota lands, and having no near relatives to oppose them, they struck out to make their fortune. During the first year they had a pretty hard time of it. They wero healthy, but not robust, and a great deal of tho work that they had to do would havo tried tho strongest mau sorely. Their capital was small, and they did not realize enough the first year to pay their own expenses; but neigh bors took an interest in them, and the assistance which they rendered carried '.them throngh. After that they prospered, and every year now thev do better than tho year before. Tne price of a wife in Patagonia has suddenly advanced to two SI goats and the brim of a plug hat, but it is only a temporary spurt, and the old figures ono goat and a plug of tobacco will soon be restored. Michigan has a judge who says from the bench: "Any girl fool enough to marry a drinking man should be compelled to live out her days with him, no matter what the abuse." How the Taxpayers arc Snlndled. Corrupt contracts Unbalanced bids. Unreliable estimates. Fraudulent bonds. Imperfect material. Un satisfactory workmanship. Fictitious figures. Favored contractors. All this on the public works. But how about tho works of your inner man? Impoverished blood. Bhenmatic riot. Lazy liver. Dyspeptic stomach. Give attention to these and set them right with Brown's Iron Bitterf. Mrs. Morlock, of Westminster, Md., says, "I havo used Brown's Iron Bitters a id found it a good tonic and ap petizer. A Colorado coroner held a separate inquest over each of thirty-two hu man bones found in the brush, and has been bounced for his enterprise. For pains in tho back nothing equals St. Jacobs Oil. It cures quickly and surely. Grasshoppers have made their appearance in the wheat fields of Dakota, near Fort Bufcrd, doing considerable damage. A rand-uephcw of Bonaparte lives in Baltimore and ha3 so much of the fightiug blood in his veins that no one dares tread on his coat-tails. The polygamists of Utah now intro duce one woman as "the wife" and the others as her "companions," and the law is put out over tho trick.
