Au Important DUfoverj.
A discovery has been made in Pay
allnp valiey, "W. T., about fifeeen
miles east of Tacoma, wbicb promises
to revolutionize the oil trade. The
exact location is near Eli. about six
miles from the Cascade branch of the
Northern Pacilic railroad. On this
spot over a year and a half aco traces
of oil were discovered. F. E. Smith,
who is interested in this important
find, reports that tho discovery was
kept quiet and prospecting continued
and the oil indications wero so en
couraging that a corporation was
formed called tho Tacoma Oil com
pany, with L. F. Thompson, the hop
king, president, and V. II. Fife as
secretary.
A few weeks since the officers of
tho company became so well satisfied
that there was a vast deposit of oil
where their lands were located that
they sent to Pennsylvania for two ex
perts and also for well-boring ma
chinery. Tho oil experts, with their
boring apparatus, havo arrived, and
began operations last Monday.
The indications, the Pennsylvania
men say, are the best they ever saw,
and the confidence m striking a fiow
iug well is very great.
The oil so far found is what is
known as ''amber," and burns in a
lamp readily without being refined.
It is of tho highest known grade. It
is anticipated that the borers will con
sume thirty days lime in siuking the
well 1,500 feet.
There is already considerable ex
citement over the affair in Tacoma,
and oil prospectors are out in every
direction.
The importance of this discovery,
should it provo that flowing wells aro
plenty, cannot be over estimated.
Vith oil in plenty tho country around
Tacoma could supply the entire Pa
cific coast and tho whole ccunlry for
at least half way across tho continent.
Washington territory may yet havo
its coal oil Tommys, and as Colonel
Sellers would sav, "There's millions
in it.'
