The German authorities, with a view to discourage emigration, have forbidden the railways to carry emi grants at reduced rates. A dispatch from London says: M. Lesser states openly that the pos session of Herat has become necessa ry for Russia and ought not to cause Pitixcn Fkedeeick Charles, the Red Prince, left a fortnne of up ward of 10,000,000. The bulk of his estate goes to his son, Prince Freder ick Leopold. The London Life reckons the val ue of the Times" advertisements on a recent Saturday to be about .2,180. This is at the rate of 13,000 a week and 52,000 a mouth. HALr-PESNT dinners can be ob tained in London, consisting of a rich stew made of the best quality of pota toes, carrots, onions, oatmeal and meat, and a second course of bread and jam. The clerks of the first assistant postmaster-general, at Washington, who have been denied the usual month's vacation, will apply, so says a Washington dispatch, for an extra month's pay. The Oreyoitlan thinlcs that the state exhibit at the New Orleans ex position did no material good and that it would be a foolish waste of time and money to repeat the experi ment next fall. The trip from New York to Boston via Hartford, distance 229 miles, was made by a train a few days ago in five hours, deducting about seven minutes lost in slops. This is con sidered a great feat in railroad trav eling. A sextimen't in favor of tariff pro tection is making considerable head way in Great Britain, and has devel oped itself in the suggestion that a royal commission be appointed to in quire into the prevalent depression of trade. President Clevelaxd anil the members of his cabinet have lately received a good many telegraphic messages obviously written by insane persons. There is only one sane feat ure to these telegrams. They are marked "Collect." A German newspaper contains an obituary in which occurs the follow fellow follew ing: "Our dear eon Gustavo lost his life by falling from the spire of a Lutheran church. "Only those who know the height of the steeple can measure the depth of our grief." Lewis Purdy of Shrub Oak, West chester counly, Virginia, probably the oldest postmaster in continuous service in the United States, celebra ted his forty-fourth year last week. He was appointed by President Har rison in 1811, and has never missed a day in the performance of his duties. Duitixo the last hundred years the English race has multiplied fivefold, the Eussian fourfold, the German two-and-ahalf fold, and the other European races in a smaller propor tion, Italy haviug nearly doubled, and Prance and Spain having added only about 5o per cent, to their pop ulation. Men should always yield when their wive3 wish a new dress or any other article of wearing apparel. A negro in Yirginia refused his wife a new pair of shoes, and she went be fore the magistrates and informed of his committing a murder some twent years ago; and now tho husband is behind tho bars awaiting trial. A warning to married men. Sir Richard Caktwktgiit places Canadian finances in rather an un favorable light. IIo declares that there has been an increase of S100 000,000 in the debt, for which there is nothing to show bat two railways, one of which has been given away, while nobody cares for the other. Since 18G7 tho population has in creased bnt 30 per cent, while the debt has advanced 200 per cent, expendit ures 150 percent and taxation 150 per cent. Ox tho day of the failure of Grant & Ward, May 6th, 183i, Jesse 11. Grant had on deposit with the firm $113,415, which he had deposited with it at various times as his bank ers. A demand was mado for the payment of tho amount, but, as it was not paid, suit was brought in the supreme court for its recovery. The defendants put in no answer or de murrer to the complaint, and on the 11th judgment was rendered in favor of Jesse R. Grant for 8121,472, being the amount claimed together with interest and costs. In 1801 the population the United Kingdom, exclusive of the Channel islands, and the army, navy and mer chant service abroad, was 15,902,0G0. In 1SS1 it was 31,931,000. This growth has been pretty evenly distributed through the decadeB. It has been greatest in England and "Wales, the population of which has grown from 9,001,000 in 1S01 to 27,499,000 in 16S3, or more than threefold. In Scotland the increase has been from 3,52.,G00 to 3,90S.000. The N. Y. Herald's Alexandria, Egypt, correspondent has had an interview with Hussein Pasha KhalhT, the former governor of Berber, who was present near Khartoum at the time Gordon was killed. Hussein is the special commissioner from the Mahdi to the Khedive, this being the only way in which ho could return to Egypt. He says there is no truth in the report of the Malidi s death. The idea of Gordon having escaped from Khartoum is preposterous. It would appear to bo settled that Gen. Grant's remains are to be buried in Central Park, Now York. It is a mistake to bury him there, and savors loo much of the show business. The place for the hero's sepulture is at Arlington cemetery near Washington, where lie the bones of tens of thous ands of Union soldiers. There he should be buried and there should stand a handsome memorial .monu ment. A statue of Grant would be appropriate in Central Park, but the natural feeling3 of all will protest against his burial there. XSXESSktfSI JIJOKS. In Jewell.
