Indians was in Kentucky,1 says a western man to tho Philadel phia JVi cics. Tho whites came along and wanted their lands. The govern ment said to the Osages: "Go over in Illinois, and we'll givo yon land there for S'AoO an acre and "pav vou S3 for your Kentucky laud." The'ln dians had to go. Before long the whites caught up with them, and tho story was: "Go over to Missouri, and we'll give you land for SL50 per ac re and pay you S10 f or this." They went. The ax of tho white man was soon heard, and again the story went: "Go over to Kansas and we'll give you land for 8L25, and pav vou S15 for this." "Great Scottf said the Osage chiefs, or whatever the Osage for that mild expletive is, "we'll keep moving as long as you liko at this rate."' So over to Kansas they went. Here tbey stayed a few yetirs, and at last the government said: "See here' we can't go on doing this. We'll have to put you over in the Indian tern- Jory, where we'll give you land for nothing and will pav S18 an acre for this.' It is easy to suppose that tho Osages went aud there they are to day. Uut this isn't all the storv. There are to-day just 207 Osages. They have in bank a great sum of money which inakes them the richest Indians in tho conntrs', and not only that, they have in the ludian tcrritorv a tract of rich land that is as large as Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Delaware combined, nnd as fertile as the Garden of Eden. This land the "cattle kings" have got hold of by paying the chiefs a small sum for the bargain and receiv ing a lease in return at a lower rate, The young Osages think this rather hard lines., but they have got so muct money that they don't need to grum ble; in fact many people will wish they were Osages when thoy read this story. Southern women seem elated over the fact that Miss Cleveland has writ ten a book. Every letter from south ern women to tho publishers has somethincr to say about the fact that Miss Cleveland is the social head of a Democratic administration. The women of tho south aro all politi cians, and furthermore, aro patriotic. Another reason why Mis3 Cleveland's book is popular in tho south 3 be cause she is a temperance woman. In that region tho temperance party is waxing strong, and tho women all make a point of this characteristic That there is nothing on temperance in the book is of no consequence; thej are solid in their support of her because she is for temperance, and for that reason thousands of them will buy her book. The southern preacher, "Sam" Jones, says that certain men " onght to havo been in hell long ago. " Hor ace Greelej' used to say in opposition to the doctrine cf the uuiversalists, whose worship he attended, however, that there "are not half as many damned as there ought to be." These efforts to correct tho failures and mistakes of tho Almighty are liko tho regrets of Alphonso of Castile that ho was not present at the creation to give the Creator somo excellent hints which ho believed would have greatly improved the result of the six days' work then aud thcro accomplished." " You've como from tho rink," said the maiden fair To the south who was on her waiting; "Pray tell mo what's tho attraction there To-night. Is it f nucy skating? " Ho rubbed his spine "and his face be trayed His bosom's agitation; "Tho same old attraction is there," ho said, "Tho attraction of gravitation." For.
