ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY 31 LV
:l. 1S5
'EXTERTAiXMEXTJ"
lincKKT visits of a semi-official na
ture to our seaside city have been the
occasion o some remarks, compli
mentary anil otherwise, regarding our
hospitality as a community, and our
action as hosts and hostesses to
guests.
It may not be wholly out of place
to say that the free entertainment of
visitors is no part of Astoria's duties,
and is not reasonably to be expected
by any one. "We have hundreds of
hospitable people here; gonerous cit
izens who are pleased to see their
friends and who make it as comforta
ble for them as means and circum
stances permit, as long as they choose
to remain, but this "setting 'em up,'
"free feed,'' "everything furnished,'
is not to be looked for, and if sought
may result in disappointment.
A moment's reflection will conviuc3
any lady or gentleman of the impos
sibility of having things so. Astoria
has thus entertained nearly 3,000 peo
ple this season and would gladly "en
tertain 100,000 more without money
and without price. "With us it is not
a question of intent, but ability. "Wo
would like to "set 'em up" for the
whole gang, whoever seas lit to come
and make it like salvation, but
churches cot money, and so" does
grub.
The foregoing might be put in
more dignified diction, but the mean
ing is there.
People come here not for any
yearning desire to embrace us, but
simply because it is n good place to
come to in the summer. They have
no particular use for us before thoy
come nor after they go, and in justice
cannot expect us to furnish free en
tertainment to those we never saw be-! a
fore and never expect to see again.
These few lines are written with
pen in hand hoping you are well and
leaving the writer in the same con
dition. They are meant in all kind
ness to disabuse the popular error
that we have a perpetual 4barbecue
down this way and are anxiously
awaiting the guests bidden and un
bidden. The most of us have to
work for our living and while we are
always glad to see our friends and
acquaintances and always have a
chair and a knife and fork for the
stranger within our gates yet in all
kindness we would suggest that the
aforesaid stranger would understand
that it is not a matter of course, that
it is a favor, a token of hospitality
,aud to be appreciated as such. As
toria is not a show town subsidized
by the state to entertain all who see
fit for reasons of their owu to come
here. It has no special source 3 of
revenue and as it docs all that can
reasonably be expected of it and a
good deal more, it naturally feels it a
nttie wiien uncomplimentary remarks J
are made because more is not done,
when the wonder is we do so much.
All of which is kindly meant and wc
trust will be received in the same
kindly spirit.
A HAM) BLOW
"Jon:; EoAcn has failed. A brief
dispatch and one of peculiar interest.
He was born in Cork, Ireland, about
sixty-five years ago. His career has
been one of the phenominal ones in
this country. At eleven years of age
ho came to America alone to hunt out
an uncle who lived in Texas. He
found that Tcxa3 was so far fiom
Kew York that he concluded to re
main in New York. The old iron
works of James Allaire were then
tho largest in the country. The lad
sought employment thero and wrs
told that he could be taken on as an
apprentice to learn the trade
by paying 3100. He worked at
odd jobs and hoarded for over
a year to get that sum. When
he reported to the foreman that of
ficial called him a good-for-nothing
Irish brat, and refused to set him at
worlc The lad marched over to tho
office. He went up to the proprie
tors desle. Pulling out his memo
randum he said: 'jfr. Allaire, Tve
paid you my 100; I've got your re
ceipt. But the foreman says I'm
good for nothiug, and won't take
hie on. I am good for something,
and I want my chance." Al
laire was pleased with the Irish
boj's pluck, and he got fair play. Ho
was offered tho foreman's place years
later, and refused it. Afterward he
was made foreman. The works passed
into the hands of Theodosius Secor,
and John Eoach set up a little shop
in Goerck street His first job was a
lot of grate-bars for a "Williamsburg
brewery, which ho made aud deliv
ered himself, carrying over two or
three at a time. "With his own hands
he made the pillars that still form the
front of Bellevue Hospital. In three
years he had accumulated 1,500, and,
leaving the balance of his savings in
the hands of Allaire, took a small
amount of cash and started for the
west, wiih the intention to buy land.
Allaire's failure in business killed
this project and loft the young man
under the necessity of working as a la
borer in order to live, lie relumed to
Kew York and shortly afterwards he
was a married man b this time set
up in business, in which he prospered
for a whilcbut was afterwards financi
ally ruined by the explosion of a boiier.
Undaunted, he started afresh, and be
came the owner of the fonndry in
which were built the largest engines
ever constructed in the United Slates
up to that timo. After a few years
lie bought out the Morgan iron
works, the Neptune, the Franklin
forge and the Allaire works. In
November, 1871, he also bonght the
ship-yards at Chester, Pa., owned by
Eaincr & Sons.
He always gave a man a chance and
paid every one just what they were
worih. He got some government
contracts, did good work and made
some money. Since Cleveland's elec
tion Boach has probably been the
best abused man in this count ry. and
yet probably no man ever deserved it
less. Eoach has constructed millions
and millions of dollars' worth of
steam vessels, has never lost :i cus
tomer and never had a lawsuit. No
ship-owner ever took a ship from
John Roach's yard in an unsatis
factory condition. The belter he was
known, the more he was respected
and appreciated. Liberal to :i fault,
ho could not ignore an appeal for aid
or sympathy and churches, charitable
organizations and individuals were
objects of his charity, A man with
less malice never lived. He had a
good word for everybody. The poor
est and the most ignorant of his
workingmen could approach him
with confidence. lie knew he had a
friend in John Itoach. Abetter hus
band or a more affectionate father it
would be hard to find, "lloaeh," said
newspaper man, "have you any
any hobby?" "Yes," was the ready
reply. "May 1 inquire what it is?"
"Yes," said the ship-bui!der, it is "my
family."
Sometime ago he contracted to
build four vessels for the government.
He built them in exact accordance
with the plans given him by the ad
visory board. The first one, the flol
phin, was refused, and Secretary of
the Navy "Whitney and Attorney
General Garland made all the politi
cal capital they could out of the
matter. Garland latelely decided
that all the contracts were void, and
as John Eoach had put all his money
into the vessels there was only one
thing left for an honorable man to do.
He put all his affairs into the hands
of his assigns last Saturday and re
tires, a ruined man.
jIr. "Whitney and Mr. Garland have
persecuted this man as a scape goat
for the delinquencies and shortcom
ings of others, in the hope of mak-
iug political capital out of it. On
them and on the policy they repre-
sent must lio the blame.

President Elijah Smith, of the O. lL &

the Coos bay region, where the Oregon
Southern Improvement company, of
which ho is president, hns interests, has
been interviewed by a Stundard reporter
and states that he had a pleasant journey,
passing from Koseburg to tho coast by
sfagfi. during which migration ho was
obliged to subsist on jerked venison and
antediluvian bacon, and usa a hay barn
as his sleeping apartment. IIo is not
impressed with th9 immediate possibili
ties of the Coos bay country. Tho laud
for agricultural purposes is almost use
less, and as it can only afford timber and
coal, and as these commodities aro very
low in the market, it will bo some time
before that section can hope for any
marked improvement. He&aid this com
pany owned about l,CO0.OD0 acres of coal
laud in that vicinity, but had not begun
to make any openings in that direction
vet. and were not likely to until tho Gov
ernment completes the jetty at tho bar
in the bay and facilitates navigation.
The company's new mill commenced op
erations on tho 14th, with a capacity of
130.000 feet a day. There aro about six
million feet of logs ready for tho mill,
wliicli will likely be Kept in steady opora
tion until that lot is consumed. Tho de
mand for timber is not active, but the
depredations of tho teredo compelled
them to get their logs out of tho boom. .
IIo said thero was no intention to remove
the mills at Empire City up to the river
there; that they would get rid of the logs
before the little destroyer could make
any inroads.
Uegarding tho lease, 3Ir. Smith says he
is not absolutely certain that it will be
consummated and go into effect by the
first of tha month; that, in fact, tho
parties to tho leaso aro so uncertain in
their arrangements and agreements that
ono could not be positive untill they took
actual hold. President Harris had gone
to the cast hurriedly, to bo present at a
meeting of tho directors of tho Northern
Pacific, to bo held on tho 23d inst., when
he woald present tho advantages of tho
