LiE IN SIBERIA.
From a man ivho has been in Si-.
beria for several years past, the I'O'it
IniclUgenccr learns some thiDgs of
interest. The population is sparse,
and is composed cbiefly of mixed
breeds, with a few Russians and na-;
tives of unmixed blood. They live J
mostly uy lisuiug. xuc mu, hm;
tbose'on our own side of the North
Pacilic ocean, are of many varieties.
Salmon is the most plentiful and
common. Down the coast the salmon
are smaller, aud about like our silver
sides. The Ivamschatka salmon are
immense, ranging from 4.0 lo 100
pounds apiece. Off the coast are
cod, seal and whale. There is but
little communication with the outside.
Petropauloski is a forbidding place,
tLe country about being undesirable,
the town itself small (about 1000 in
habitants), aud poorly put together,
and. the people- ignorant, stolid aud
ubattractive. They go Dowhere, aud
see nothing but an occasional scaler,
whaler, trader or war ship. About
half the year they are frozen in.
They travel about with dog sleds.
Great tales arc told of the speed and
power of these animals. Our inform
ant says that he has himself gone
with a ten-dog leatn 00 miles iu nine
heurs: also that with the same team
ho has hauled 1,500 pounds of freight
80 miles in two days. Tho dogs are
fed wholly on fish, a single silver sal
mon constituting a day's food for oue
animal. It would be impossible to
live there without dogs, and some
families have several teams of them.
To keep from freezing resort is had
to skins aud furs. To illustrate:
The warmly stockinged feet are put
in a skm stocking, with the hair on
tho iuside. This in turn is pushed
into a loug-legged, skin boot, the
foot or which is partially Glled with
hay. This boot is tied closely around
the log, so as to keep ont snow aud
cold, and they answer not only for
boots but for pantaloons as well.
The seal islands, off the coast, are
leased to the Alaska Commercial
companj-, which get from them over a
hundred thousand skin3 a year. Other
persons are forbidden to engage in
tho traffic, yet violations of tho regu
lations are common. Five schooners
engaged in illicit sealing were seized
last year. The Russians favor Amer
icans in trade over other foreigners,
and they look npon us as allied with
them in bonds of the firmest friend
ship. Vladivistock, which is far
down the coast, near the Corean ,nul
Chinese linef , is buiJdiug np rapidly
and handsomely, and promises to be a
largo city. Russian war ships and
soldiers are kept there all tho time,
and in case of trouble that city wonld
become one of the most active points
in the empire. The country there
will slowly develop in the future, as
in the past, and the time will come
when it will be of considerable con
sequence in the commerce of the
world, and particularly in that of the
west coast of the United Slates. This
county already enjoys the bulk of the
Kamchatka trade, having even more
than Russia herself. The govern
ment permits the use of lands by the
people without price, but it passes no
title, and for this reason settlement
and improvement aro retarded.
Cream from unsound milk, cream
that has bceu kept too long after
skimming- uouo of these can be
made into first-rate butter, by any
skill in churning, or after any "treat
ment. Good cream will give pale
and spongy butler if churned at too
high a temperature. Butter will
come all the way np lo seventy de
grees, and even a little higher tip in
winter bat it tfill be poor; and fur
ther than this, if cream is churned
six or eight houra, and the butter has
not come, because the cream is im
perfect, or the temperature is wrong,
though the temperature bo rectified
and the butter brought, the product
will be inferior in color, texture or
flavor, and generally iu all three. It
has been so hurt by over-churning
that it can nover be restored to any
thing like excellence.
Captain Rufus Calhoun, of tho bark
Ceylon, informs Judge Swan, of Port
Townsend, that oa his voyage from
Honolulu m the bark U. U. wtit
moi'e, about tho middlo of Jnne he
sailed through an enormous school
of Mackerel in latitude 33" N., longi
tude 1353 "W., but not having any suit
able fishing gear, he was nnable to pro
cure specimens. Captain Calhoun will
take a complete mackerel outfit with
him on this voyage on tho Ceylon,
aud should he be fortunate enough
to again meet with tho school, he
will make it a point lo secure some
of them to test their quality. He says
they acted in the wator precisely like
the schools of mackerel in tho norlh
Atlantic.
Lewis river, except tho Cowlitz, is
the largest tributary of the Columbia
river below the "Willamette. The
north fork is the larger and more rap
id branch. During mean and high
stages small river boats can ascend to
Cedar creek, about ten miles above
the junction of tho forks. Small set
tlements exist above Cedar creek, but
the stream is too rapid and obstructed
by bars of heavy material to afford
navigation. Valuable cedar and
white pine, as well as fir, aro reported
to abound on the headwaters.
Two men, named Jack Woodruff
and E. W. Otey, are at present at tho
mouth of tho Umpqua river engaged
in tho slaughter of seal for the oil,
for which they find ready sale at
Gardiner.
HORRIBLE SUFFERING.
Vicksbckg, Miss., July 19. A- re
port has just been received of a hor
rible butchery iu a convict camp at
Crew lake, La., on the Yicksburg,
Shrcveport and Neiv Orleans railroad.
It has leaked out that Philip Riley
was whipped so unmercifully that he
died from the effects. Riley, who
was about 18 years of age, was sen
tenced in New Orleans to one year's
servitude for larceny. He protested
his iunoccncc to the honr of his
death, and it was reported that ho
was to be pardoned by tho governor
this monih. There are about 371 con
victs iu the camp3 who are employed
in working on the railroad wheeling
dirt and raising tho road bed. The
camps are under control of Captain
C. T. Husted. One of his lieutenants
a man whose heart is as hard as
stone is Joo McQuarters, who is
kuown among the prisoners as ' Joe,
tho butcher." It is slated he beat
and whipped young Riley after he
had fallen at his work, sick and faint
from weakness. The boy plead with
McQuarter in vain for mercy. ."While
the lash was being applied four negro
convicts held the victim down. Young
Riley was carried from the pillory to
what is called a hospital. He became
speechless, and death soon took him
beyond the reach of the inhuman
wretches at Crew lake. The stories
told of the horrors of convict camps
are almost incredible, but there is
good reason for believing that tho
worst has not baen told. Tho "Le
gree1' of slavery time3 was a philan
thropist compared with the convict
cont.actor. The prisoners are worked
sixteen hours a day. They are half
famished for want of food. "While
the convict lives the contractor is de
termined to grind tho largest possible
nrofit out of his bones. "When the
convict dies the contractor loses not
a penny, as the supply of this kind of
labor is at all times equal to the de
mand. At one place whero the Crew
lake convicts were housed for a few
weeks, twenty-three newly made
graves are to be seen. Protests are
being raised in many quarters against
tho murderons barbarity of contract
ors; but the legislature of Lousiana
is proof against public opinion. It is
quite likely tho ontragC3 incident to
the convict camps will bo tolerated
for many years to come.
Jewelry Storo RobLcd.
A large jewelry store in Bo3tonwas
robbed recently, by some ingenious
rascals who had secured tho combin
ation for the safe lock. Thev carried
off about S20.000 worth of choice
jewelry. This was a serious loss to
the jeweler, but not so bad as if he
had been robbed of power to digest
his dinner. Stolen jewelry is bard
to rec jver. But Rrown's Irou Bitters
will restore digestion. Mr. Charles
Wolf, Kenton, Ohio, says: 'I used
Brown's Iron Bitters for dyspepsia
with satisfactory results."
At a late hour Friday night Coroner
Winlermute, of Tacoma, issued a war
rant for the arrest of M. A. Walker,
Helen "Walker aud Charles Walker
on the charge of being guilty of and
accessories to thecrimoof the murder
of William Lockwood, whoso dead
and mangled body was fouud on the
railroad track Thursday morning
after having been run over by the
cars.
