CROP PROSPECTS IN THE VALLEr.
The Willamette Farmer rates the
prospective crop of wheat in the "Wil
lametta valley at 20 per cent less than
last year, and adds: "The crop pros
pect" is flattering, indeed, for while
some talk of shortage and rust, etc.,
others say that it will be more than
an average. Wo do not donbt but
that there will be less wheat raised
in this valley tho present harvest, but
it is because there is leas acreage
sown. There will be bettor average
yields than all anticipated." The J
vield of tho harvest of 1885 will 30011 '
now bo placed beyond more con
jecture or estimate, hence it is not
worth while to try to reconcile con
tradictory statements concerning it.
There is certainly no reason, thus far, j
why the harvest may not be a good
average. A rainy season is now a1!
that is to be feared, and many farmers
who lost their grain last year by being
dilatory will not bo caught by the
early showers again.
In Linn county harvesting is well
underway. An exchange says: "Sev
eral pieces of earlv fall grain in the
vicinity of Albany have already been
cut, and many farmers expect to thrust
in the sickle next week- There has
been much talk of rust, anditis prob
able that spring sown grain will bo
damaged to some extent from this
cause, but those whoso wheat fields
are already ripening inform us that
the harvest which is near at hand
will develop tho fact that this damage
to spring grain will bo offset by a
heavy crop of fall wheat. Several
fields near Albany will average from
thirty to forty bushels per acre, while
others, of course, will make much
less."
Yamhill county will turn out larg
er percentages of all products this
year than for any season for many
years past. Hay, grain, frnit, veget
ables, all givo promise of bountiful
returns. The Jieporter says: "A. G.
Chandler left a bunch of oats at this
office on Monday which he is cutting
for hay. This sample camo off a
piece abont two feet square, and if
the ncid bad all been ot the same
rank growth would have been cut for
the grain. It measures five and one
half feet high and would produce 100
bushels to the acre."
Between Portland and Lebanon all
the farmers are reported very busy
harvesting. A gentleman just down
from the latter place, states fully one
half of the fall sown grain along the
line of the road has already been cut
Tho prospects of an abundant yield
are very encouraging.
