The members range in ago from 50 to 76 years, and repre sent the four great classes of religion m England the High church and Low church Episcopalians, the Rom au Catholics and non-Conformists. Politically the commission is equally vvell assorted. The two Anglican bishops were appointed to their pres ent sees by Gladstone, and are mild ly liberal." Cardinal Manning is con servative, and Morley is a radical of radicals. The commission began its labors to day. The acceptance of this task by such meu convince the most skep tical that the Guzette revelations are not mere assertions of sensational journalism, but they expose a fright ful imminent danger, which the guardians of the church, state and society must seize without gloves and throttle without mercy before it over whelms their orders. Sir Richard Aehton Cross, home secretary, announced in the house of commons yesterday that the govern ment had concluded that it was not advisable to prosecute the Pall J fall Gazette for its recent publications. In aristocratic circles there is much indignaliou expressed over the refusal of the government to prosecute, and over the alleged lowering of their dig nity by eminent churchmen m con senting to have anything to do with the subject. There is good reason to believe, however, tbat most ot this in dignation 13 simulated. It was not until the government had distinctly refused to prosecute that the aristo crats became clamorous for prosecu tion, and the reasonvinu)bvions?-'Th"e Pall Mall Gazette, it driven to the defensive, certainly would have car ried out its threats of reveal ing the names of the lecherous aristo crats, if "confronting princes of the blood with brothel-keepers and of snbpenaing half the legislature to prove its charges." The fear or exposure has receully made life un bearable to many a titled and wealthy ruffian who holds his head high in London society. This terror is now removed, or at least greatly modified. The courts would surely have dragged forth names; the new commission is much less likely to do so. It is an nounced that it will treat confidential ly all information placed before it, but will make a general report as to the truth of the Gazette's revelations. Lovers of scandal for scandal's sake are therefore likely to be disappointed, but the recommendation of the new commission in the way of more strin gent laws will be so potently backed that legislators, guilty and innocent alike, -will hasten to consent to their passage. Washington, July 15. A sensa tion has been created here by the an nouncement by "Brick" Porneroy that he will receive subscriptions for tho erection of a monument to Mrs. Sur ratt, who was executed as a conspira tor in the assassination of Lincoln. Pomeroy claims that Mrs. Snrrat was worse than murdered; that she was an innocent woman, without murder in her heart. He points to lho fact that all tho members of the military commission that condemned Mrs. Surratt to death are dead, except Jndge Holt; that he is residiug in a snburb of this city and is almost crazed, and that a majority of those dead committed suicide proof, ho thinLs, that they saw tho injustice of their verdict Citizens of Surattville, a small village in Maryland, near hero, have subscribed $1000, which they believe will guaranteo tho suc cess of tho project to mark tho rest ing place of the deceased conspira tor. "Wichita, Kns., July 15. Daily Eagle special from Cheyenne agency says: A dispatch is received from Fort Supply of the arrival of a courier, who reports finding the bodies of two cowboys, on the range on tho Cher okee strip, who had been murdered, and their bodies staked to the ground by Indians. 9 lad j- Physicians for Bombajr. The Bombay merchants recently appointed a committee to try to in duce some lady physicians to go from England to pratice medicine, in Bom bay. One lady has sailed, and more are to follow. The advance of Russians has made tho Afghans anxious, bu they aro determined to resolutely resist any attempt to seize their territory. They are puzzled at these war-like preparations of the Russians under cover of Pacific assu rances. It is believed that General Alikbauoff, commander of the Rus sian advance is determined to force on war, and there he is deceiving the czar in regard to his real intentions. Tho downward tendency in the stock market to-day was assisted by rumors that the government had re ceived information confirming ru mors received by tho 2'imesot a Rus sian advance on Zulfidar pass. The news of this hostile demonstration on tho part of Russia, together with Churchill's assertion in the commons last evening that England -would as sist the ameer if he asked for assist ance, has created much excitement In the commons this evening Lord Randolph Churchill, secretary of state for India, replying to a question in regard to the reported Russian ad vance in Afghanistan, stated that the government had heard of no move ment Speaking of the retirement of members of tho British Afghan fron tier commission in the direction of Herat, Churchill said that tho Hcrat iese, hearing that the Russians had continued their descent on Herat, had invited Commissioners lates and Pease to enter their city, and the re quest had been complied with. News is received of a combat between the forces of Iho revolutionists and those of Qnin- tero Calderon.lt took place in Taraal- ameque, and over d'JO rebels were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. At a coroner's inquest in Philadel phia recently over the body of a child. the jury returned a verdict that death was caused by tho administra tion of a patent cough syrup, con taining morphia.
