The mills on the Sound" aro now all runniug on full time, and have a daily capacity about as follews: Tacomn 200,000 Foitlilakclv 200,000 Port Gamble 1.-0,000 Port Madison 80,000 Port Ludlow 80,000 Utwdadv SO.OOO Seabed;". 150,000 Port Discovery 100,000 Total 1,040,000 J3y these figures it will ba seen that if the mills put out their daily full ca pacity there will not, at this rale, be a large accumulation ot logs at the end of the summer's operations for the mills to go on duriug the winter, should the demand for lumber con tinue. At present prices, and with the dull state of the market, with all the seeming activity, mitlmcn and loggers are enabled to realize very small profits, even if they are able to come out whole at the end of the sea son. Wages in the camps vary from $21) to S0 per month. Last vear they wero from $40 to $133. A 24 foot fir log recently cut in Snohomish county by Blackmail Bros, measured SO and ftii inches; respectively across the smaller and larcor ends. Published facts in relation io the revelations of the l'all Jftill Gazelle show a frightful stale of affairs. The "legal age' of women in England is fixed at HI, and taking advantage ot this license to prey upon children, young giris have been enticed and drugged by the paid tools of promi nent men of Loudon. One procuress confesses that a leading physician purchased from her an average of three young girls in two weeks, paying therefor from $2.) to $33 each. The (!i"t!!c says Hint some of the houses in which ouug girls aie lured have und.rground rooms, and stune are country villas, which have thick walls, and aro furnished with double carpets and heavily curtained windows, se curely closed by thick shutters; and in one of these places a girl might scream blue murder, and her cries be unheard. One woman said that in her experience she found that dragged and mined girls never knew what happened to them until the next morning. They would cry a good deal from pain, and a sense of their Lu uiliaMon and n i In 93 cases out of 200 the victims were usually girls under fiftcui, and wbcu they realized their position they would abandon hope and lead a lire of shame thence forth. A well-known member of par liament laughed heartily when asked what he knew of surmised concern ing the trafiis in young girls. He said: "It is true that maids are ob tained at so much a head. I myself have procured a hundred at $23 each. The girls kuejv what they were doing, and it is nonsense to call it rape. They know their purity is a realizable asset, and they are not slow to set a price upon it.' Commissioner Sparks, in his anxiety to find under existing laws some rem edy for the acknowledged fraudulent practices by pre-emption claimants, has ordered that the issue of all pa tents shall be suspended until each individual case can be investigated. His object is a good one, but this seems a harsh method of attaining it, as well as one of doubtfnl legality. It is questionable whether he has the power to withhold patents upon the presentation ot proofs required by law, unless upon complaint and charges in the way specified by law. This indefinite suspension of the date for securing complete title seri ously interferes with the honest pre emptor's chances of selling his claim should circumstances render it neces sary to do so, as well as defrauds the county in which the land is situated of tho taxes, which can only be levied after the patent is issued. Tho best remedy for pre-emption frauds is the abolishment of the law altogether, and such modification of the home stead laws as will render their pro visions less of burdensome and appli cable to a greater number of people. Our public laud is going fast, and no person should bo permitted to ac quire more than 169 acres from tho government. Even at that rate it will all be gone in a few years. - . m - " - - Whv will you cough when Shtlohs Cure will give immediate relief. Trice lOctsOOctsandSl. Sold by iY.E. Dement A COWARDLY MURDER. The following particulars of a cow ardly murder are taken from the Bak er City Hatjelirmli of July 9th: "Yes terday morning about half-past 2 o'clock, news reached this city that a foul murder had been committed last Tuesday morning, near the "Malheur agency." The messenger reported that a man by the name of John Cooley had shot and killed James Lavery, a farmer and stock raiser of that section. Immediately a warrant was issued by Justice Boynton and placed in tho hands of Sheriff Dealy, who at once dispatched a deputy to the agency to serve the warrant. The particulars, as near as we can learn, are as follews: A dispute arose be tween the two men as to who was the rightful owner of a piece of land they both claimed. Lavery claimed he had done everything required by law, had made final proof, and tho land belonged to him, while Cooley main tained that as he had a prior claim he was the rightful owner. On the morning of the Gth inst. John Lavery, brother arid partner of the deceased, in company with two hired men commenced cutting hay on the land. They had been at work but a few minutes when they were fired upon by a person concealed in the brush near by. The men thinking it dangerous to remain, immediately stopped work and returned home. On the following morning James Lavery, thinking there was no danger whatever, and considering the shoot ing of the previous day as a mere bluff, repaired to the field, and was about to commence work, when he was confronted by a 50-calibro needle gun in the hands of Uooley, who, lev eling the guu at Lavery's heart, fired, the ball entering the left nrm between the elbow and wrist, and thence passed through his heart. The citizens of the surrounding country immediatelyafter the killing turned out en masse to capture the murderer and found he had been taken four miles north ot the Malheur agency about -1 o'clock in tho af ternoon by a young man named A. J. Whitley. "When within a few yards of Cooly, Whitley leveled his gun and ordered him to throw up his hands, which order he obeyed, and was then taken by "Whitley to the Baker City jail, reaching thero at,ll o'clock the same night. The prisoner claims that he was ;on liis way to Baker City to give himself up. The deceased was about 2S years ol age. He was always considered n quiet and peaceful citizen and was highly respected by the -people who knew" him. He leaves a mother, sis ter and two brother to mourn his sud den :.nd unexpected death. The re mains were brought to Baker City and buried. rsnious fur Fr ratlin. Most appropriately is Brown's Iron Bitters called a family medicine in viaw of such cases as that of Mrs, Cook, of 57 Frelinghuysen Ave., New ark, N. J. That lady writes, "1 Lave used Brown's Iron Bitters since last summer with great benefit, especially for indigestion' and always bny half a dozen bottles at once. There aro three to use it; we all feel stronger than for years defore, and can rec ommend "it to all who suffer from dys pepsia, loss of strength or indigestion, righlf ally termed tho king of evils." At a recent meeting of tho San Fraucisco academy of sciences, Prof. Duvulson read a paper by Arthur IS. Emmons, on Mount Pitt, in the Cas cade range ot southwestern Uregon. Prior to 1875 no ascent of Mount Pitt had been made. Mr. Emmons' ex plorations revealed the fact that Mouut Pitt is a volcanic mountain containing two extinct craters, one half a mile and the other three-quart ers of a mile in circumference. The elevation of the mountain ij 0,713 Teet above tho level of the tea. MJothtn ShouM "ots Thi-s." Under this caption an old physician writes to a Cincinnati Aledcal Jour nal, that in view of the fact that peo ple living at a uistanco irom cities are frequently obliged to resort to conirh mixtures already put up for use, they should provide themselves with ciily such remedies as are known to" be free from opiaC3, pois ons and narcotics; thus avoiding not ouly danger, but even ratal results. He" recommends the recently discovered Bed Star Cough Cure which analyses and tests by various Boards of Health proved to be purely vegetable as well as prompt, effectivo aud entirely harmless. The Skagit JNews tails of two huge trees lately cut in the Skagit valloy. One wa3 a spruce which measured 29 feet in the circumference at 18 feet from the base; 23 feet 50 feet up and is 150 feet in length. The other tree was a fir, which yielded a sawlog of 9 feet 10 inches in diameter at tho larger end. The Beauty ofTouth. No matter how handsome and stal wart a vounjr man may ba otherwise, nothing can make up for a partially bald head. Shining talents are at tractive, but a shining poll is not.
