FOARD k STOKES CASCADE CONSTRUCTION NEWS. j A Standard reporter speaking to a i a gentleman who holds to the gentleman identilied with construe-' opinion that Prof. Eaird deserves tion affairs of the Cascade division, ' much credit for stocking Oregon of the X. P., said that things were ' waters with shad, writes to inform us progressing quietly on the line which J that iu view of the absence of a state is in process of construction from J fish commissioner, the press of Ore South Prairio to "White river. The ! g0u should be mindful of the obliga- conlractor of the grading work lias tion and express thanks for these been advertising for men for the past favors, etc. Possibly; but if the mis few weeks, but the inducements of- erablo snecimen of fish called shad. f ered are not sufficient to attract labor ers unless they are totally stranded, iu such a case, they go to work for a brief period, and when they have ac cumulated enough to get out of the country they generally pack their kit and sctk fresh lields. The reason why there is a dearth of men is ac counted for by a reduction in wages from $2 to S1.73 for laborers, and bridge carpenters from S3 to $2.75. Hair of the men refused to submit to the reduction, and construction was delayed for a few weeks until fresh recruits could arrive on the ground. Track is being laid at the rale of about a mile a day when the course is clear, but- track layers are often hindeiedby the bridging sometimes for a week'at a time. The two tun nels, twenty miles the other side of South Prairie are still unfinished. The boring is going ou with all possi ble haste, but in one of the tunnels a serious obstruction has been en countered in the shape of a sand baok, where it was ex pected they would have solid rock throughout. This is unfortunate, as they will have to expend twice the amount of money in lumbering and keeping it in repair than they would ir their expectations had not been thwarted. It may prove necessary to change the tunnel at the point at which I he sand begins, to a through cut. Kelson Eeuuett b;is the con tract for grading, tunneling and track laying. Hoffman k Hates of this city have the contract for bridging up to Green river. From Green river to While river, the bridging is under the charge of James Saguin of St. Paul. The work at the present rato of progress will not be completed be fore the end of the year. THE CANADIAN PACIFIC. On the mountain section the rail are now laid to a rojut near the sum-J mit of the Selkirks, forming a con-1 tmuous rail connection from Mont real westward for a distanco of near ly 2.500 miles. On the goernment section between Port Moodv, the present Pacific ocean terminus, and Savona Perry, a distance of 213 miles, the rails have been laui. Un the sec tion between Savoua Perry and the present end of the track, near the summit or the Selkirks, a distance of 203 miles (the only remaining gap be tween Alontrcnl auu tue l'aciuc ocean) the work is so far advanced as to justify the expectation that the rails will be laid before Iho end of Stplem bar -completing the track from end to end of the entire main line (2,803 miels). Upon completion of arrangements with the Canadian government, the company have a cash deposit in the hands of the Dominion government sufficient to pay semi-annual div idends at the rale of 3 per cent per annum on ils SS3,000,000 capital stock for seven and a half years, or until the end of the year 1803, It will own 3,200 miles, and will hold under lease C03 miles of fully completed and thor oughly equipped railway, formiug a total mileage of 3,001 miles. It will own more than 21.000.000 acres of agricultural land. It will own three fine slccl steamships on the grcal lakes, and na extensive and well appointed telegraph system, with power to extend its telegraph Hues to all parls of the country. All this property, together with certain out side assets, in all valued al$230,0G0, 383, will be represented by a total indebtedness of S33,S02,2i3, bearing an unusually low rato of interest: and by 33,000,000 capital stock, for which dividends for ll years will be in hand. The road earned in 1831 3,750,512; iu 18S3 it will earn at least SS,000,000 and in 18S0 probably ten millions or more. The grand lodge of A. O. TJ. W. met at Salem on tho 10th. The fol lowing grand officers were elected: Geo. B. Horris, grand master work man, Eugene City ; J. T. Brown, grand foreman, Olympia, "W.T.; Dixie H. Boss, grand overseer, Victoria, B. C; IX T. Wheeler, grand recorder. Seattle, AV. T.; B. Tj. Durham, grand receiver, Portland, Or.: G. T. Bussell, grand guide, Oakland. Or.; Oliver nail, grand watchman, Colfax, W.T.; Win. Armstrong, grand trustee, Salem, Or.; grand representatives J. A. Child, P. G. 3L W., Portland, Or.; C. N. Bradshaw, P. G. M. W., Port Townsend, W. T.; T. B. Hanky, P. G. M. Wr., Hillsboro, Oregon. The salary of tho grand re corder was reduced from SL500 to $1,200. A committee of five was ap pointed to inspect the books of the grand lodge officers tind to assist the recording and financial officers of subordinate lodges to roport to the order at large upon tho general con dition of the order in this jurisdic tion. The following was the com mittee appeinted: W. J. Plymale, of No. 23; Geo. B. Dorris, of No. 15; A. P. Wheeler, of No. 2; H. P. Jones, of No. 53. Tho amount duo tho grand lodge for supplies furnished to What com lodge, of Washington territory, recently burned out, was remitted to that lodge. SHAD VS. SALMON. which have made their way to Oregon waters from California, are samples of the food fishes propagated by the institnto over which Prof. Baird pre sides, Oregon has very little demand for them, and the fishes we have would prosper better without them. Shad so far, in the Colombia, are an almost utter failure. Wo remember hailing with delight tho first one trapped below Astoria about five years ago, because, first we knew noth ing concerning tho habits of the fish; secondly it was bestowed upon us as a rare treat by a gentleman supposed to bo versed in all ediblo fishes. The bones of that fish will stick in our throat and we have never since had a hankering after shad. Tho call for legislative protection for shad is per fectly gratuitous, they are capable of amply protecting themselves. Posi tive knowledge concerning tho habits of shad is scarce, but it is safo to say that they stay by tho salmon spawn long after that king of fishes retires from the defence of its becL It is a notorious fact that shad thrivo in eastern streams known to bo full of black bass, the very worst enemy known to salmon. No, just at this time we cannot sav that wo feel the least bit thankful to Prof. Baird, G. H. IL AToore, or any other man, for expressing to Oregon five or six hun dred thousand shad to compete with our better class of fishes for suprem acy. Wcdeploro it:and regret the introduction as muciu as we do the absence of a fish ladder at Wallamet falls, or the failure of smelt last seas on. In the sweet bye and bye shad will occupy the places known to salm on no more extensively. Fish and brains are supposed t'i belong to gether; bnt there is something amiss somewhere in this latest enterprise of the Smithsonian inslitntejn an al leged kindness to OrerpnjJwwhich -we fail to appreciate. YcwsihiUIieporier. :?--S33gSS& - 'cafepto Pepper Comes from the neighborhood of Cayenne, in British Guiana. It is a stimulant without being in any re spect a strengthened Somo medi cines have a good deal of Cayenne pepper iu them in connection with other articles, and tho folks who take them think they arc receiving strength while they are really being only stimulated. The oiieci of the stimulus is soon over, and then tho patient feels worse than before. Brown's Iron Bittera is free from Cayenne pepper, and contains the best tonic, together with tho only reliable preparation of iron known to modical science. Tho druggists all sell it. A poet says : 'A year she had slept the sleep of the dead, When tho young wife rose from her narrow bed." We don't believe it. If such an un heard of occurrence had taken place, the papers would have priuted a re port of the seu3ational affair, with head-lines six inches deep, illustrated with a portrait of the young wife, and sketches oC her ''narrow bed' and her rising therefrom. S. G. Allen, traveling for Murphy Grant & Co, has a singular curiosity which he brought with him from Mc Aliunville. It is a $20 gold piece which was found in the stomach of a cow butchered at the above mentioned place. The milling is almost worn away while the Goddess of Libertv is almost denuded of drapery, and the dalo 1S0 is only just readable. This would indicate that the $20 had been in the bovine's stomach for many year?. The Reality of Youth. No matter how handsome and stal wart a young man may be otherwise, nothing can make up for a partially bald head. Shining talents aro at tractive, but a shining poll is not. The cause may be sickness or any thing else, yet Parker's Hair Balsam will stop the I033 of hair and start a new growth of glossy and soft hair so quickly as to surprise you restoring the original color at the same time. Not a dye, not oily, delicately per fumed. Only standard oOc. dressing. The report is confirmed that small pox prevails among tho Indians at Polar river. Tho red men are perfect ly frautic. and aro lleemg from that place in every direction. It is fe ared the dreaded contagion will spread to the tribes up the river. The Ability to Rear Palu Is the test of fortitude among the Indian tribes. But we defy any Cherokee, Sioux or Comanrhe to endure the twinges of rheuma tism without wincing. These, indeed, are slight at first, but grow in intensity until they become unbearable. No malady is more ob stinate in its maturity than that which gives rise to them. The rcore need, then of attack ing it at the outset.
