JULY 10. 1685 Tit uks began runuing regularly on the Oregon Pacific railroad Inst Sat urday. Gov. 13uxn, of Idaho, has demon strated liis good sense by resigning bis position. Tnn inhabitants of San Joaquin valley, California, arc using 3,000 pounds of arsenic every reck trying to kill the grasshoppers. Hoadly has been coaxed by Ohio Democrats to run for governor of the Buckeye state, and their coy bland ishments have won from him a re luctant consent. It is reported that the force on the Cascade division of the Northern Pacific is to be doubled on the 1st of next mouth, which, if so, will greatly hasten the completion of the work. The On yon tan thinks Portland needs a fine hotel, but sarcastically adds that "no doubt it is useless and might be preposterous to suppose that the wealthy men of Portland would do anything of a public char acter." A correspondent of the Loudon Times, writing from Naples, says that all animals whose skins are worth a centime are skinned alive in that fair city of the sea. Old horses, young kids and lambs, all dogs, cats and rats are skinned alive, because the skin when removed from the liv ing creature is considered more sup ple and sell" for a somewhat higher price. The Tacoma Lvdypr kicketh over the appointment of General Arm strong, of Louisiana, to succeed ex Gov. Newell as inspector of Indian agencies in these parts. It asks: "Isn't it about lime lhat Cleveland stopped going out or the United Stales (as General Armstrong mapped them in 1SG1), to look for appointees who are not 'offensive partisans!'" It does look queer, but "what are you going to do about it?" Gov. Moody is at present the re cipient of more advice than any other man on tue coast, iwerv newspaper man, and a few that are not newspa per men, are busy telling him "whether lie should appoint a United States senator or call a special session of the legislature. If the old saying be true, "in a multitude of counsellors is safe ty," then our worth' executive is per fectly safe. It is, perhaps, no viola tion of confidence to publish the fact that he will cither appoint a senator or call a special legislative session when lie gets ready. Ik the east mad dogs are beginning to attract some of the attention that has hitherto been lavished on Federal appointments. In one town in Wis consin, a mad dog ran a muck and bit nearly every dog it met. The in habitants are preparing for an epi demic of hydrophobia. We would call the attention of our unhappy fel low countrymen cast of the Rocky mountains to the fact that there is a land here close to the Pacific where mad dogs are unknown, where sun stroke will not knock them (our fellow citizens) out or hurricanes blow them up. Ax Arizona paper makes the follow ing anneuncement: "We will pay $10 for a good epic poem of one hun dred lines on the 'Scourge of the Seventeen Year Locust. Said poem must be sound in wind and limb, but it must not b2 all sound; a little sense is desirable. All metaphors must bo new and applicable io the subject. No more than one poetic license to ten lines will be allowed. IUivmc not absolutely necessary, but reason a sine qua non. 2o parodies allowed. We reserve to ourselves the right to work over the poems of all unsuc cessful candidates into editorials on the need of a new navy and the fail ure of the wheat crop.' According fo our English contem pories, the practice of litigants con ducting their cases in person is one that seems to be daily gaining ground in England. Occasionally a jury will make strange bluders, nays a writer, but, as a rule, what they want i3 to have ihe facts brought fairly be fore them. This a counsel often does not do. He is thinking of the rules of evidence, or he fancies that it would be politic to suppress this particular fact or to avoid that par ticular circumstance, or iu some other way to finesse the evidence. This is what a jnry dislike! They can get on much better with a liti gant in person who blurts even-thing out with a supreme contempt for all established rules, and who, if a thing is not evidence, will somehow make it so. During the past year, among the marine casualties on this coast are enrolled the wreck of the City of To. 7: to at Yokohama; the burning and abandonment of the new British ship Cowdcn Law; the loss of the Estada tie Sonora, off the coast of lower Cal ifornia, September 30, 1SS1; and the sinking of the Earl of J)u17iowie in San Francisco bay, May 13th. Amon g the minor disasters are noted tho run ning aground of the schooner Aurora, at Black Point, December 7lh, during a norther; the case of the schooner Alh-i Kimball, which collided with the Fannie A. Hyde, August 8th, off the entrance to San Francisco harbor, and afterward went ashore iu a dense fog below Fort Point; and the acci dent to the schooner diaries T. WiiLslow, which, after running aground at North Beach, December 7th, and being towed off a few days later, parted her moorings at Stew art's Point, February- 13th, and went ashore, proving a total loss. There is a notable absence of casualties ia or around the Columbia river. The New York Sun compiles a lit of some of the great wooden and iron sailing ships. The largest merchant sailing ship ever built in the world was that constructed by Donald Mc Kay, the Grcal Ifrpublh; of 3,30G tons. But that vessel was partially burned at her dock in New York, and iu repairing, was cnt down, one of her decks being taken off. Her ton nage after that was considerably less Besides, it is to be noted that her measurement was according to the old rule. The new rule adopted by tho federal government a few years ago materially reduces the tonnage of all vessels. The YandirbtU. a steamship constructed in New York, and converted into a sailing ship in San Francisco is registered at 2.927 tons, and is now the largest sailing ship in the world tho Gimi lit pub lic having gone out of existence. The largest wooden ships in the world are now turned out in the Maine ship yards. The Oi'itin Klny, :i four mast ed ship, was built at Kennebuak. That vessel is of 2,510 tons burthen, and has been at anchor in San Fran cisco harbor, near Goat inland for nearly a year. NEW TO-DAY Net Lost. irroTTTii on the night ot ttii jcia.
