Londok, JnlyS.-The PalUIall Ga-1 zctU in its unpleasant exposures of ' vice, plainly states dates and Jocali- tiL'.i. j. 111; juy uuuwiuiuuuu to iu it- fjard lo the names of the rich aud ti litled ruffians "who have trafficked in the chastity of women. In many cases these are described with &uch accuracy that it would bo a supor iluous piece of information, even to casual readers of newspapers, to add their names. The stories evidently are not fictitious, for tho paper chal lenges libel suits by printing the street numbers of mauy houses rented and used for the purpose of wealthy debauchees. The owners or occu pants of these houses have abundant cause of action against tho Pall 31 all Gazelle, whether tho stories aro true or false, for the old adago of common law, ''the greatar the truth tho great er the libel," prevails unmodified in Ihjglaud. No suits have yet been begun against the paper and the pro sumption is that the parties do not care to risk tho publicity which suits for libel would involve. There is a general impression that the revelations of tho Gazette, horri ble as they are, in the main aro true. The question that remains is whether it is justifiable to parade such sick ening details in tho public press. The exposure is the leading topic of conversation on 'change, in clubs, in railway carriages and wherever men meet together. The editor of tho Pull Mall Ga Zi tU said, in an interview, that the exposure had not been mado without careful advice from learned jurists in regard io every detail, and that he kept not only within tho palo of the law, but far within the bounds which natural and honest indignation would have prescribed. As to tho law, he knew ho was justified, and as to pub lic opinion, he feared nothing, for ho was backed by the highest and best in the land, including Cardinal ATan uing, the Earl of Shaftsbury, and oilier eminent men of nil denomina tions. The polico have oeeu ordered lo suppress street sales of those issues of the Pall Jlall Gazette which con tain articles-on secret vices of Lon don. All the news venders found selling issues on tho streets aro being arrested. Six venders who wero tak en into custody this morning wero arraigned this afternoon in tho Man sion House polico court and remand ed for a week, bail beiug allowed. The Fall Mall Gazdten ono of its laic aflern xm editions, bids defiance to the authorities' work of attempt ing to suppress the sale of tho past three tlajs' issue of the paper. It claims honor for leading in tho cause vf exposing vice3 of tho rich, and de clares tho best men of England sup port it iu its crusade. The Gazdte challenges the courts of London to prosecute it for tho work it is en gaged iu, and says it might subpena half of the legislature of England to prove the ticcuracy ot its revelations. The Gazette continues to-day tho work of adding to its revelations. The paper is selling at a great pre mium, and tho circulation is enor mous. OREGON AND IOWA. Iu future numbers of tho Adcer liser we shall tell our readers of the wealth of that country doveloped and undeveloped. "We shall tell of mighty forests that have not felt the woodman's ax; of grain fields that the world cannot excol, fisheries, mines, hospitable people, etc., etc. We have given somo attention to tho labor question and shall publish some facts concerning same, but here will say brielly that tho Chinese have sup plemented the American in all places where unskilled labor is employed. We have also had an excellent oppor tunity to note the workings of the li cense' laws of Oregon and the terri tories and compare tho same with prohibition (?) iu our own state. Twice wo have traversed tho stato of Oregon from north to south, and east lo west. "Wherever we went it was practically a "circus day," the people coming in great numbors to meet us. As we traversed nearly all tho thick ly settled parts of tho stato, wo prob ably saw one-half of its population. "We spent a full week there, and dur ing that time did not see a drunken Oregon tan. Should any of our readers doubt our statement, will they bo kind enough to call at this offico and we will give them tho names of several prohibition editors who wero of tho party, and ask that a copy of this pa per be sent them with a request that they refute misstatements, it any, slating where such drunkenness did occur. On our return homo on Sat urday night we witnessed more drunks put off at Cedar Kapids in 'nronibition lowa tlian wo -saw among tho residents of Nebraska, Wyoming territory, Idaho territory, Oregon and "Washington territory, during our three weeks' stay there. Our opinion as to tho causes of this will appear in future numbers of tho Advertiser. Lyons, (Iowa) Adver tiser, June 30th. Examine Yonr Boilers. BaiiTimobe, aTaryiiAXd. Stato In spectorof Steam Boilers P. A. O'Brien publishes a card, stating that while recently suffering from n dangerous cold a member of tho Board of Health advised him to try Bed Star Cough Cure. A few deses cured him, and ho remarks that its efficacy is astonish ing and at tho same time it ia free from opiate?. TERRIBLE BRUTALITY. CnAitiiESTOx, S. C, July S. About the middle of June Governor Thomp son was informed that convicts em ployed iu grading the Savnuiah val ley" railroad wero cruelly treated; that one convict had died in conse quenco of a brutal whipping by guards; that they were overworked, and excessito mortality prevailed among them. The governor immedi ately instructed tho superintendent of the penitentiary to investigate tho charges. Tho official report which has just been mado shows that sixteen deaths havo occurred since January 1, 1S85, out of a fotal force of 120 convicts; that seven are unable to werk: that convicts aro required to march three miles to work with shackles on their legs; that on ac count of bad quality of food scurvy has mado its appearance, aud there has been excessive cruelty in punish ing convicts. In describing the ef fects of tho beating of Henry Peter by A. W. Jackson, who had tempor ary charge of tho convicts during tho absence of tho regular overseer. Dr. S. Pope, tho penitentiary physician, says : " As evidence of the severity of tho whipping inflicted, I will state that the tissues havo beeri sloughed, leaving an open scar eight inches long by ton inches wide. Tho pun ishment must havo boen very cruel I doubt his comploto recovery." Oth er convicts wero also cruelly beaten, although the condition of those now at work is said to bo "very fair." Jackson, the inhuman guard, has fled to Georgiabut efforts aro being made to secure his arrest There is great indignation at theso outrages and stops will probably be taken at tho next session of the legis lature to discontinue tho praclico of farming ont convicts to railroad com panies and phospnafo mines. Grijxada, Miss, July 8. The mob, after hanging tho murderers, ATc- Christian and Williams yesterday, started after two other men implicat ed. Williams had confessed, stating that Bartlej James and John Camp bell assisted in killing two peddlers Tho mob found James at his house, and carried him to Union church, about ten mUes from GreHadaf'Sand hanged him to a tree. Thejfvwent'ta Campbells house, and Csmpbellfired upon tho mob, wounding one of the vigilantes, and then mado his escape. It is rumored that at daylight this morning tho mob overtook Campbell. Ho refused to surrender and they shot him to death. "nnrloa's Anatomy of Jlelanclioly" Is a wonderful book, setting forth in great detail just how miserable hnman beings can be. Bnt tho whole horri ble mess of misery may be summed up in one word dyspepsia. Any body who is afflicted with that dis ejisc knows the whole wretched story. Anylxnly who has taken Brown's Iron Bitters for dyspepsia knows how com plelo and happy is the cure. Mr. Chas. A. Wilson, of St. Lonis, writes, "Brown's Iron Bitters has greately relieved me of weak stomach, indi gestion and dizziness." Harvey Ward, a carpenter, sold half his laud near Glencoe, Washing ton county, about two months ago, to a womand in Portland, and received S300 in cash therefor, and has not been in tho county since, and it is feared that ho has been foully dealt with. The lady to whom he sold half the property came ont to take posses sion soon after tho purchase, but, finding tho houso locked, did not move iu, and has been waiting for him to return and give possession. He had some pigs and a few chickens and other stock on tho premises that he did not sell, and it is natural to sup pose that ho intended to return hom The Ability to Rear I'sin Is the test of fortitude anions the Indian tribes.
