Richer and 3Iore Extensive than at Fir?t Reported. Almost tho first notico received, hero of the discovery of neT7 gold mines in Union county, in this state, came by telegraph from Omaba. The Union Sentinel of Saturday is now at band witb the follewing: " Parties who arrived from Pine creek since our last issue, confirm previous reports of the ricb leads re cently discovered tbere, and there is a genuine old-time stampede to tbo diggings. There seem3 to be be no desire in either Baker or Uuion coun ties to create an undue excitement, as tbo camp is so near and easy of ac cess, that false reports would prove of no lasting benefit to any one con- "": xuerc is annual an unani mous opinion among those who have been there, that eventually the dis covery will afford support to a resi dent population of 2.000, which will prove a bonanza to the farmers of Eagle, Pine, and other outlying val leys, who have hitherto been" compar atively without a cash market for their products, and they deserve all the success they may meet with in bavintr ononed tin nnd nlf;r.nfn1 these sectiona so isolated from profit able transportation. J. B. Sams, of Big creek, was in town Saturday, nntt says he saw J.TV. Virtue returning to Baker, having been unsuccessful in hia endeavors to purchase an interest in the new mines, though ho had offered $50,000 for the same. We received other news from Mr. Saras, but too late for publication. It's tho biggest strike yet made on the coast. Last Tuesday Mr. Henry Fowler, one of the original discoverers of the Pine orcek mine, went to Baker Citv and sold, at the banking house of J. . Virtue, -i-1 ounces of gold, for which he got S1G per ounce, amonut- IUT to tho sniirr enm r.t 57M1 "f- Fowler and his partner, iu the discov ery or tne witniau mine, pounded ten pounds of quartz in a mortar, from which they realized the above amount. On tWO of tllO Tinw llicfnrnrins -, Pine creek the owners nm nint-inir $25 per day each by the use of a mortar. Many Tiarlies aro now ounnapA n placer mining, rich and extensive dig gings having been found in every di rection. Trails are lined with men going in, and it is estimated that 300 men are already in camp. The little store first started at the mines has already netted nearly $10, 000 cash sales. Pine creek ore is freo milling and easily worked. Martin Murray has made arrange ments to start a saloon. William Harper i3 building an arastra, and will soon have it com pleted. Baker City is threatened with de population, snch is the exodus to the mines. The steamer St. Paul, which has arrived at San Francisco from Oona laska, reports that the ice about the Seal Islands was thicker and more formidable than it had been known for many years. It was also learned through tho steamer Cortcin that the ship Atlantic, which put into Oona laska for repairs, had sailed for the Arctic ocean. The scraps of news which have thus far beeu obtained from northern latitudes, all confirm tho theory that this will be a tough year for tho whalers in tho Arctic. Tho theory is confirmed by tho re ports of heavy ice below Bchring straits so late in tho season.
