THE CIVIL The results obtained by Mr. Kirk ley, a statistician of tbc adjutant gaDwai's office, iu compiling from all attainable sources a list of tbe deaths ob tbe Union side during tbe Avar, says tbe 2s. Y. 3ail and Express, possesses a melancholy, but very sfcroag, interest at tbis time. It bas been a very difficult task to gatber the names for tbis roll. So many perished unseen and unknewn: so many loitea avray in soutnern pris ons of whom every trace is lost, that tbe compiler might well despair of ever completing bis task witb any tbiatglike an approach to accuracy. Fatience and perseverance have at last accomplished tbe difficult task, liowever, and we have iu Mr. Kirk ley's tables what is at least tbe most accurate and complete death-roll yet pubtMhed, if not one that is abso lU?ly without error. The registers of a doxen southern prisons have not been secured -those at Americus, At lanta.AugustaX'harlostou, Lynchburg Maoon.Marietta, Mobile, Montgomery" Savannah. Shreveport and Tyler and only partial lists were obtained from GahawHa, Columbia. Florence, Millen and Salisbury; but, with these ex eeptiuns. the roll is substantially complete. One of tbe most remarkablo results arrived at, at least to tbe reader who knows nothing practically of war, is that more than twice as many men died from iliseac-s in the army as from the shotjshclljbayonot and sword of tie enemy. One hundred and ten tikottsand aud Ihirty-eigLt officers and men were killed outright or died of their wounds; but 224,5SG died of disease. The number of those who are known to have died in captivity ienelie Uk appalling total of 29,- ias. Another remarkable fact is that ovor 50 er cent more men were killed in action than died of wounds, the respective numbers being 02,890 and 40.777. At least three-fourths of the wounded must have recovered, par tially at least, so that they did not die clttring the period covered by tbe in quiry, which ceases with the muster ing out at the end of, the war. How many veterans there are still among its who carry about on their bodies the marks of violence suffered during the war, let the long pension rolls testify. Mr. Kirkley's tables are arranged by states, so that we can tell just how many lives each one contributed to the cause. New York, of course, heads the list, witb a total of 40,534; Ohio comes next, with 35,475; then Illinois, with 31,3S1; then Pennsyl vania, with 33,1S8, and Indiana, with 20.072. Michigan. Missouri, Massa chusetts, "Wisconsin, Iowa and Ken tucky contributed between 10,000 and 15.000 eaoh; all the rest less than 7,000 oach. It is worthy of remark that every state now in the Union, except South Carolina, is represented on the list, and every territory except Utah. Thore are only 15 from Georgia, 42 from Virginia, IS from Mississippi, 141 from Texas, 215 from Florida, 345 from Alabama, and 300 from North Carolina. Arkansas contributed 1,713 and Tennessee 0,777. This is exclu sive of colored troops, of whom 30, S17 died, and does not take in non combatants of cither color. The grand total of known deaths in the Union army was nearly 3G0, 000. Adding as many more for tbe confederate losses probably not an ovor-ostimate and taking into ac count the navies on both sides, and the prisoners who died uncounted, we roach a total of at least S00,000 mon as the cost of that war to this country nearly one-eighth of its en tire voting population. NnooruTioxs looking to the per fection ot arrangements for the final settlement of tbe fisheries dispute between Canada and the United States are now under wav. It is re ported that the president will under take to bring the question before congress at the next session, and to recommend the appointment of a joint commission charged with tbe settle ment of the whole question of fishing rights. Iu the meantime the United Stales proposes that there be no en forcement of the fisheries laws and regulations from July 1 to the close of tbe present fishing season. Stuakt TatijOK, a newly appointed naval officer at San Francisco, .has the following posted at bis doer: "The undersigned has no offices at bis dis posal. He is worried to death witb applicauts. lie will not sign any more potitions, or give any letters to any fedoral officer. It is absolutely useless to ask an appointment, and cruel to barrass him." The Cnuard steamer Oregon, which is now armed as a swift cruiser, will be the flagship of admiral Hoskins during the maneuvers of war ships in Bautry bay. Besides her ten guns Yavasseurs and six muzzle-loading G4-pouuders the Oregon has eight steam launches of high speed, capable of being used effectively as torpedo boats. She will also receive several Gatling guns. Gek. Boseoraks is quoted as say ing, apropos of reorganizing his office, that wherever ex-Union soldiers were found who were inefficient they would be removed and competent Democrats who served in the Union army put in their places. Jefferson Davis is reported, in a rather circuitous way, to be appre hensive about the stability of tbe country. Jefferson shouldn't fret himself. All that will be demanded of him will be to keep stilL The mugwumps who threaten to desert the administration if it doesn't recognize them are like the man who threatened that if they didn't draw him out of the well he would cut the rope. During May, 8,900 pension certifi cates were issued, which is the larg est number, says the "Washington Star, ever granted in one month since the organization of the office. Bayard is reported to bo a source of disappointment to the president, and it is thought certain that he will soon leave the cabinet. An Ohio college president thinks it is folly "to put a $4,000 dollar edu cation on a fifty-cent boy.1" NEW TO-DAY. FOR LIVERPOOL DIRECT! BOBSON, Supt. 2gf xs'-u A TRir TO THE FALLS. "Ho! for Young's rhcr and the falls.' At 8:30 Cnpt. 1'nrker sang out "All aboard!' and the Clartt Parker cat loose from Main street dock, nnd steniucd off with n largo crowd of excursionists, amid waving of handkerchiefs, and hearty good cheer. Tho day was magnificent, and tho trip around Young's bay and up tho river was enjoyed exceedingly. After ar riving nt tho hoad of navigation, the small boats were lowered and quickly filled, nnd everything in tho shapo of n 'float" was secured nnd the 'flotilla" started for tho falls. Some profcared to take a "short cat" over tho hills, and reached tho falls in duo time; others took the wrong road, and kept going "over the hills to tho poor house, and got lost. Tired and weary they laid themselves down to rest, and not till the first shrill whistle from tho Clara sounded on their ears, did they know where they were. With a bound thev sprang to their feet and started in the direction of the whistle through tho woods, not trusting them selves again to crooked roads and blind trails. Another whistle, and they doubled their speed, when finally they got 'out of tho wilderness" and saw the steamer in the distance. But there was no time to bo loit; another whistle and they would bo left lost! They had no time to look after stragglers, 'twos evory- one for himseit ana tne a l lane tue hindmost. They reached tbo boat in time to hear the last toot, weary and footsore. Their many losses tboy could not at tho time recount; ono of tho party was missing, and another lost tbe best part of a now pair of breeches. After leaving a handsome reward, lor tne re covery of the missing excursionist, the Clara Parker steamed back to Astoria, arriving at 6:30.
