Ben Perley Poore In Bosfon Budget. Tbad Stevens was an inveterate gambler. One who had met him in the haunts of "the tiger," describes him as bavinc plaved Tor excitement, not carinc "whether he won or lost. Like Fox, who described winning at nazard as tne greatest pleasure in me, and losing at the same game as the next greatest, Stevens lost or won with the same apparent indifference, lie played with consummate coolness, never lost his temper, and never in creased the amount of his bet either to retrieve his losses or more rapidly increase his winnings. His sarcastic remarks upon the discomposure of his fellow-players, who sometimes exclaimed with rage and prolanity at their ill-luck, were always witty as well as cutting. While they were eating and drinking with the voracity of cormorants, he never indulged in anything more stimulating than a oracker and a sip of water. Tho con trast between his coolness and appar ent apathy and the eager, fierce ex citement of others sitting at the same table and engaged m tho same pur suit was amazing. A Story of Boocher. It is said of Henry "Ward Beechor by one who speaks authentically that he is verv fond of precious stones not the big diamonds that actresses are fond of displaying, but unset pearls, rubies, sapphires, emeralds ard amethysts. His delight is to gather the loose gems up in his hands and look at them. His collection of gems, while not large, includes some very pretty and costly ones. Ono day Aliss Jillen Terry paid him a visit. Ho was delighted, and exerted him self to entertain the renowned actress. He succeeded in a marked degree, and wheu sle arose to depart she made some pretty little speech about an oasis in the desert of her memory which would ever bo green when thiukiug of the visit .Not to be out- dene in gallantry, the divine got down down his box of gems and showed them to her. Ho ran his lingers through them. "Select one," he said. "It will make the oasis bright as well as green." bho spoke of their value, and ob jected on that account He still in sisted that she should take one, so finally she selected au elegant cats eye gem, which sho bore away as a souvenir of tho Plymouth Church pastor. "Old Hickory." Gen. Jackson was known by the soldiers who had served under him as "Old Hickory," a soubriquet given him during tho Ureek war. His bri gade was making a forced march, without baggage or teuts, to surprise tho Indians in one of their villages, and wero for several days and nights exposed to tho peltings of a .March storm, tho rain freezing as it fell. Gen. Jackson got a severe cold, but did not complain, as he tried to sleep in a muddy bottom among his half frozen soldiers. Capt. Allen and his brother John cut down astout hickory tree, peeled off the bark and made a covering for tho General, who was with difficulty persuaded to crawl into it. Tho next morning a drunken citizen entered the camp, and, seeing the tent, kicked it over. As Jackson crawled from tho ruins tho toper cried: "Hello, Old Hickory, oome out of your bark and jroe us in a drink! ' Thenceforth the General was known in camp as "Old Hickory," and when he was talked of as a Presidential candidate the nickname was adopted by his supporters. Tho "liberty tree" of the Revolution was revived in the "hickory tree," planted at every coun try cross roads and village by tho en thusiastic Democrats, while they sang: Freemen, cheor the hickory tree, Long its boughs have sheltered thee. Graut Last Speech. What is believed to havo been Grant's last public speech was made at a meeting of the chaplains of tho northern and southern armies held at Ocean Grove, N. J., in August last. At the gathering in the great audito rium, Rev. A. J. Palmer, of New York, who enlisted at the ago of li. and served all through tho war, made an address of welcome, closing as fol lews: "The man inflexible in peace, invincible in war, calm in defeat, magnanimous in victory suon a man I say can never be belittled or dis graced by the sharks or tho sharpers of Wall street" When the cheers, which continued for more than five minutes, at last subsided, Gen. Grant came forward, and resting painfully on his crutch said in a low voice, which, however, could bo heard dis tinctly in the death-like hush: "An hour ago I might have made a speech, but now I am almost afraid to try. I know, as few can, tho good these chaplains have done. Think of the consolation they have given to the sick and dying; think of the last mes sages of the boys in tho field they havo sent to anxious, sorrowing moth ers and fathers at home! I have not words to express my thanks for this welcome. I appreciate" The sen tence was never finished. Tears stood in the general's eyes, and ho dropped back into his seat with a suppressed eob. This is believed to bo Gen. Grant's last formal appear ance in public. He was driven back that night to his cottage at Long J ranch. The Oregon Pacific Eailroad com pany proposes to pay 15 per cent of all claims exceeding $100, and 20 per cent of those less than S100; company to give its notes for balance, payable in four months from date, with G per cent per annum from date. The com pany further agrees to deposit with Hamilton, Job & Co., bankers in Cor vallis, as collateral to secure payment of said notes, the company's first mortgage bonds to the amount of SL500 on each S1.000 indebtedness. It is bolieved that within a week this compromise will be effected, and trains will commence running again. Tho following assignment is made for the payment of troops in the de partment of the Columbia on the mus ter rolls of Juno dOth: lneutenant Colonel Rodney C. Smith, at Forts Canby and Townsend; Major J. P. Canby, at Forts Cceur d'AIene Jind Fort Klamath. The officers will re- tarn to their usual stations after their work is done. The Rjspcptlc ClerV. Clerks in the stores of merchants who do not advertise should occasion ally move about the store for exercise. Otherwise they will sufler with dys pepsia from lack of. something to do. The worst cases of dyspepsia are reached and cured by Brown's Iron Bitters. Mr. L. Thornton, "War- renton, N. C, says: "I used Brown's Iron Bitters for dyspepsia, and con sider it the greatest remedy known." The safest 3 per cent bond in tho world appears to be that of tho Unit ed States, which sells for 103. Then comes those of the state of Connect icut, which sell for 102, and next those of Great Britain, which sell for 100. The 3 per cents of Franco are only worth .82. Arc You Tired of Bcins; Hick! We want to say a word to the men, women and girls who work in stores, offices and factories. There are hun dreds of thousands of you in the country. Very few of yon are well. You are shut up too much and exer cise too little. In this way you get sick. Your blood is bad, your diges tion poor, your head often aches, yon don't feel like work Your liver, stomach and kidneys are out of order. Parker's Tonic has cured hundreds of such cases. It is pure, sure and pleasant. It is computed that in the 300,000 residents of San Francisco there are 3,000 habitual smokers of opium. The indulgence costs each smoker from 75 cents to 1.50 a day, which is equivalent to an expenditure of at least S 1.000,000 a year for this des tructive habit. The only Gold Medals over award ed to a proprietary medicine, arc those given to St. Jacobs Oil as the best pain-cure. m --- New Mexico spent $15,000 for churches and $G,-1S5,000 for liquor last year. Mroti'n Ktnul.tion ofl'nro v'od Liver 01),wifh IIyp pht-jpliite DrO. Killing, of Oakland. Cat .says: "I have used Scott's Emulsion in in own case and found it a most valuable preparation, and have since used .it extensively in my practice with very surprising results to myself and pa tients." In some parts of Umatilla county tho wheat yield will be 40 bushels to the acre. A .Secretion that Contaminates the BIooJ. When the bi!e is diverted from its proper channels, into the blood, which is ahvas the case in liver complaints, it ceases to he a healthy secretion, and becomes a poison. Its abnormal presence in the circulation and .stomach l indicated by the sutlmion of. the skin with a hideous saffron tinge, by head aches, vertigo, nausea, p.iin in the right side and nnder the i Jght shoulder blade, by indi gestion, obitruction of the bowels, and other minor symptoms. Order may be substituted for this suite of chaos, and further bodily evil averted bv using this beneficent alterative and to'i:c, Hotettcr's Stomach Bitters, which, by relaxing the bowels, promotes the escape from tlte circulation of bilious Impur ities, besides ruiulcringthc action of iho liver regular, and removing every trace of dys pepsia. Tills pleasant and purely vesetable anti-bilious medicine Is not only infinitely more effecthe than any form of mercury, but it is on account of its freedom from hurt ful properties, Infinitely to be preferred to that poisonous drug. 1885.
