Thompson, a fanner living two miles from North Branch creek, in Alle gheny county, was working in a corn licld yesterday when he noticed what he supposed "to be bees swarming around the stump of an old oak tree standing in a fence-corner. He ap proached and rashly attempted to in vestigate them by striking the stump with his hoe. In an instant a whole nest of wasps, probably 500 or GOO strong, attacked him. They settled all over his head, and the man was soon rushing frantically to the house, screaming for help. The -wasps jlung to him with remarkable persistency, and when he reached his home his wife was compelled to beat them qfij witu a broom, no naa oeen stung in a horrible manner. There was scarce ly a piece of skin as big as a penny on his head which had not been pierced by the wasps' sting. He had just had his hair cut with a clipper, and the wasp.? found no difficulty in getting in their work all over Tiis scalp. Ono of them had settled in his left eye and stung the eye-ball. In two hours Thompson's head had swollen to a monstrous size, his left eye protruding and he "was a terrible spectacle. The man suffered great agony until 2 o'clock this morning, when" he expired. Tho most singular feature of tho case is that tho head has swollen considerably since death. Thompson left a wife and six chil dren. HIount McGregor, !N. Y., June 24. "When Dr. Douglas returned to the cottage at 11 o'clock last evening he found Gen. Grant sleeping. This continued until 2 o'clock this morn ing, when the doctor attended him to clear his throat of mucus after his throat had been washed. At this hour the general said in a compara tively clear voice, "I feel belter than I have since I came up here." The sick man then slept until -1 o'clock, when the doctor attended him again and food was given him. The gen eral rested between 8 and 9 o'clock, when he was aroused and his wants attended to. At that time the gen eral had slept seven honrs since re tiring, and when the doctor left him for breakfast he dozed off again. His physici .n savs that the patient's voice is possibly a shade stronger. though quite stuffy, except when his throat is cleaned out. On Saturdav Dr. Douglas wrote to Dr. Shrady re questing him to come to Mount Mc Gregor at his convenience for the purpose of examining the general, iu order that an official bulletin of the patient's condition may be "prepared In accordance with this suggestion Dr. Shrady will arrive here at 330 this afternoon. PoitTiiANi), Me., Juue 2L The streets are crowded to day again with 100,000 visitors. Everywhere the uniforms of the Grand Army are con spicuous. A secret executive scssiou of the uatioual encampment began at 11 o'clock. It was said that fonr years ago thero was a membership of nearly -10,000. On March 31, 1&S5, thirtv-eight departments reported 5,100 posts and 270,000 members. At the afternoon session of the national encampment of the G. A. 1L the ques tion of a place for holding the next annual encampment came up. Com rade Holmes of California extended an invitation to hold it in San Fran cisco. He guaranteed that $100,000 would be subscribed there for the en tertainment of the veterans. Com rade Alfred also made an eloquent ap peal in behalf of California. A letter from General Sheridan was read, strongly endorsing San Francisco. Department Commander Hall of Maine, and Tenuehan of New Hamp shire also advocated the Golden Gate. Norris of Nashville extended an in vitation 10 hold tho next reunion there. An invitation from Texas was also presented. After an extended debate a ballot was taken, which resulted: San Francisco 2G9, Nash ville 179. The vote in favor of San Francisco was then made unanimous "What shall ho do with onr Daughters 1" This question is asked by a well known ladv lecturer. "Well, wn mn do a great many things with them; one tuing, we must take good care of their health, and not let them run down and become enfeebled. KILLED BY HIS STF.PSON. Sikeston, Mo., June 25. "William Caldwell, living nine miles southwest of this place, was shot and instantly killed Saturday morning by Ids step son, who is about grown and gener ally regarded as of rather unsound mind. Sunday afternoon Caldwell severely reproved his son for the in different manner in which he had per formed some work, and threatened punishment if the work was not more satisfactory on Monday. Brooding sullenly over what; in his diseased imagination appeared an act of op pression and injustice, he vowed ven geance, but nothing was thought of it Sunday morning the young man arose early, secured his father's shot gun, and, carefully loading it with a heavy charge of buckshot, he de scended to the door-yard, where his father was quietly awaiting breakfast. Stopping within fifteen paces of the unfortnnate man, the young ruffian cooly brought his weapon to a rest, and with a curse pulled the fatal trigger. Caldwell fell dead in his tracks, forty buckshot having pene trated his abdomen and side, tearing the body in a most sickening manner. He never spoke aftor tho shot. The murderer escaped to the woods but cannot evade capture, as a posse of enraged citizens are on his track. Caldwell was somewhat addicted to drink, aud was overbearing when in his cups. New- YortK, June 24. The Post's financial article says: The Central Pacific company has applied to the stock exchange to list S5,000,000 in bonds of S1,000,000 each, bearing date of June 1, 1SS5, payable June 1, 1013. The bonds bear G per cent, interest. The holders have the privilege, in the meantime, of converting them into capital stock within eight years from date. No such conversion will be made, however, at less than i50 per cent, of par value. Application is nnde to list the bonds in order that the floating debt may be funded as fast as possiole, and also that the Oregon branch may be completed to a junction with the Oregon and Cali fornia road, so as to form n continu ous line from San Francisco to Port land. Hon. Frederic Billings and his par ty, from New York, spent yesterday 111 the city, and will leave this morn ing for home, via the Short Line. Mr. Billings finds many encouraging signs of improvement iu-the business situalioTfHvHfe northwest, and thinks the first movement to stir the accum ulated capital now lying in idleness in New York will come from this re gion, where the crops are large and thero is a prospect of good prices for them. It has been his purpose dur ing his extended trip over the North ern Pacific to bring its management into friendly relations with the people of the country. Standard, 2o. YicroniA, June 2L- Hibbs was be fore the supreme court to-day, aud remanded, pending the production of evidence, for twenty-one days. On taking his seat, Justice Crease anim adverted upon the remarks of the Victoria press in this case, aud said trial by newspapers would not be tol erated here. The Colonist aud the Times resent the remarks of the judge, ai.d say if an issue between the bench and the press is to occur it might as well spring from Hibbs' case as any other. Tho tone of both pap ers is defiant. Lokdok, June 2i.
