HENRY FAILING, Pres ident of the First National Bank of Portland, Oregon. J. H. BOBBINS & SON. 229 First Street, Portland, Or. Jolibt, 111., June 24. A case of( unparalleled and fiendish cruelty to i children has just been developed in Monee, this county. Mrs. Sophia Hinton, of that place, was recently arrested by officer "Williams, of the Illinois Humane society, charged with cruelty to a child, and brought to jail in this city to await trial. It appears that Mrs. Hinton is step mother to a little boy 2 years old. and a girl five years old. The little girl begged for food at different houses in the village and told such a tale of cruelty at the hands of Mrs. Hinton that led to an investigation as to tho condition of the boy. Tho little fellow was locked up in an outhouse where he had been placed by a wom an. He was naked, almost dead from starvation and so weak that he could not stand. The child's body was lit erally covered with scars and bruises. while gaping wounds showed recent beatings. The little one was other wise terribly maimed in a manner that cannot be described. He had been so long without food that he had eaten the grass which grew un der the side of the shed and tho hay which formed his bed on the ground. He was taken to a neighbor's house, where for a moment he was left in the doorway. A dish sat on the ground near by, out of which the house dog fed. Seeing some scraps in this dish the little fellow crawled to it, and when found a moment later he was ravenously eating, what the dog had refused. Seeing the lady of the Louse coming toward him, and probably thinking she was his fiend ish step-mother, ho mado a feeble outcry and raised his small hands as if to ward off blows. Both the child ren were cared for. The case was called to-day in court, when it was found that the brutal woman had es caped: A whirlwind of indignation was at once aroused; and the sheriff, who can not explain the escape is bit terly denounced.
