Ten -dollar pieces are not so plenty, and 20 dollar pieces (tho prottiost coin that ever was minted) sire decidedly scarce. A unique feature in the celebration of the coming Fourth will be painting Mt. Hood red. Four young men of Portland are going to put thirtv pounds of red lire on the summit of that prominent peak, and so arrango with acid and clockwork as to set tho whole thing blazing at i):lf p. M. It will present a grand appearance if tho acid and the clockwork ami tho red fire and tho ascent and the young mon all come in just right. The little eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Sibson of Portland, died at the residence of its grand jr ents, Mr. and Mrs. Moses llogers, in this cit yesterday evening. About three weeks ago she was taken ill with t3'phokl fever and was sent here in lwp?s the climate and medical attendance would effect a cure, but the disease had too firm a hold on her system. The parents have threo other children sick with the measles at their home in Portland and are in deop affliction. The remains will be taken to Portland on this morning's steamer. Some of the Iowa editors published a card in the Oreyoniaa just before start ing home, tolling what a great success prohibition was in Iowa, and now some more of the Iowa editors publish a card in the Xen-s, in which, with equal posi tivoness, they say it is a failure. "Some thing wrong somewhere." as J Job Inger soll says. Tho last mentioned editors say, in concluding tueir remarKs: "fcince coming to Oregon wo have noticed the results of jour stringent license law, ai!d after traversing the length and breadth of Oregon, we are free to say that we havo seen less drunkenness than we would havo seen in our state traveling tho same distance. Tho same is true of Nebraska, Wyoming Jfud Idaho, where tbe traffic is controlled 13' law. rather than by an attempt to prohibit. With theso facts staring us in "the face, we are more than over convinced that the cause of truo temperance demands the repeal of tho present prohibitory law of Iowa and the enactment of a stringent license law, such as now prevails in the noble state of Oregon.'" There is a noticeable decrease in the amount of salmon caught in the Sacramento river and San Fran cisco Iay and the popalar idea is that the sea lions which hannt the bay and dear out lo tho Faraltonos are the cause of the scarcity. Tito San Francisco Academy of Science have lieeu wrestling with the sabjoct and the resnll of their observations is interesting. Dr. 1'ehr thinks that the female sea lions should he killed: that thi would make the sen lionesses saito-. :uui that the male lncia b -is of tbo tribe woakl kill each other in :t funeral fight for (Ik-affections of what cVl.-nutuK-r of the ladies which lite sen l:oi ctUliir and killer had missed. Tite idea is a uovol in- and it would Ik- interest ing to know whero tho learned pundit got his information in regard to the san guinary style of kvc-inakiug presumably adopieil by tie amorous sea lion. Dr. Harkness thonglit that the Seal ntcks and the Faraliotiie islands were tlie brecdiug places of tho sen lions, and to exterminate tho phor.i it would le neces sary to fight them in their native lair. Ammonialcd baking powders that is baking powders in which carbonate of ammonia-is used as an ingredient, and which exhale an odor of ammonia when heated are classed by many eminent phj'sicians and sanitarians as superior to all others. Prof, llassell, of London, who is recognized as highest authority on tho subject of food hygiene, commends in the strongest terms the use of carbon ate of ammonia as a leavening agent, stating its great advantage to be in its perfect volatility, which permits it to be, by the heat of baking, entirely thrown into leavening gas whereby the bread is raised. The experiment with heat would seem to indicate the superior, not the inferior value of such baking powder. The little heat that is imparted to it when held over a gas jet. lamp or stove, suffices to resolve tho carbonate of ammonia into leavening gas and throw it off. The first heat of baking, therefore, will effectually devolopall tho gas, thoroughly leaven 1 ho loaf and dissipate tho gas-producing ingredients of a powder of this kind; and this is the highest test of a perfect baking powder. Where other alkalies alone are nsed they are not infrequently retained unresolved, through the whole process of baking, and remain au unwholesome ingredient in the finished bread. Tho carbonate of ammonia cannot be used as as a substituto for cream of tartar. X. V. Weekly Tribune. Thf V.e&r end tbe Itasy San. WEAK T0IXTS IX TIIE SEW YORK CAXNED t.-OODS LAW. Tho Baltimore Trade has secured a leg al opinion on sorao doubtful points in the new canned goods law of tho Empire state. In its issue of May 23th, our con temporary refers to the subject as fol fel fol eows: Sectional. Prohibits tho selling in New York stato of prohibited goods, but does not prevent anyone, packer or other, from putting tip anything or from placing any label and namo they please for selling unlabeled ) on goods to go out of tlie state. Sec. '2. Also names only the wholesale dealers as having the privilege of labeling as packers. This is the intention of the law and the forco of this section in this respect is not altered or lessened by the definition in Sec. 4. As there are many retail grocers who have their own labels and have special trade under tbcra, the opinion is very strong that the "whole sale' clause is invalid by reason of the injustice it works theso retailers in. favor of the wholesalers, and the law cannot make unjust discriminations. If the law cannot prevent theso retailers from buy ing and labeling as heretofore, it cannot Erevent any other retailer from placing is own name on tho can; and this leaves wide open tho door to anyone that chooses to take out a dealers license, to put his name on tho goods. Sec. 3. Exempts from the provisions of tho law all goods packed prior to the passage of tho act, but this will not con flict with Sec. C, which says the act shall take effect from January, 1, 18S6. That is to say tho goods Dacked during tho season now begun will not ba govern ed by tho new law, and we understand can bo sold as heretofore. Tho act applies to goods packed after January 1, lSSU. Sec. 4. Makes it necessary lo ask "what or who is a wholesaler?" The opinion is that it is not tho size of a single transaction but the custom of- tho dealer that decides whether he is a wholesaler or retailer, ho may do bus iness as both and would then be regard ed as a wholesaler. Anyono who sells only to thoso who retail must be a wholesaler, so any middleman having a trader's license, whether honest, responsiblo or neither, can be a wholesaler. Tho opinion is that commission men would also be regarded as wholesalo dealers, but while this would givo them tho right to place their names on goods, it will prevent their selling goods in the rough to any but packers or wholesalers in New York. A ilOXTAXA WAITEIt. One morning recently, a hungry pil grim went into Pat Conlon's restauran t and ordered some milk toast, boiled po tatoes, poached eggs, a rare steak and some hot cakes. The waiter.," Professor" Harris, went to tho kitchen and roared out to tho Chinaman: " Gimmo a grave yard stew, potatoes in the dark, two men a-horseback. a moonlight on the lake and a flambeau." When tho pilgrim heard this remarkable order ho incontinently fled from tho house, forgetting to take his hat, and muttering that ho'd "be gol darned if he proposed to tackle that kind of a breakfast, and thot if tho people lived on such things in this country he. proposed to return to Missouri.' A ronortor of the fnfer-Moitnlain, who happened to bo in tho restaurant at tho time, approached tho waiter and asked for an explanation of tho order, and the professor gave the following versien: " You see," ho said, "we get tired of common-places, and besides, we try to teach tho Chinomen tho language. A graveyard stew means milk toast, pota toes in the dark is boiled potatoes; eggs circU3 stylo means scrambled eggs: rough and ready means pork and beans; a flam beau is light, hot cakes, and moonlight on tho lake is raro beefsteak. Tho wait ers all have jwt names for these things and we throw potatoes at the China cooks till they know what we mean." Another bdnrder came m and tho pro fessor retired out with tho voico of a Stenter: "Gimme a saddle-bags and a springer, spuds on tho side, ten-penny nails and a single to come a-running.
