June 2-L Charles Geracb, ajjed 30 years, was invited by a friend, Capt Frederick H. Smith, to co on an exenrsion down the bay on tlie latter's oyster pungy, yester day. Geracb was formerly quite wealthy, but recently lost bis all in a skating rink and otber unprofitable ventures. When he went on the pungy yesterday he took bis son with him. " lie seemed to be very low spirited, and it was a subject of com ment that be refused to associate with any ot his friends. When the pungy reached a good bathing point down the bay she run ashore, and all hands went in swimming. Geracb, it was noticed, had his son well into the deep water, and then suddenly seized him, and they both went under. Tho boy succeeded in breaking loose from his father, and swam for shore. The latter swam in pursuit, but finding that he could not overtake his son, turned about and deliberately started toward the middle of the bay. His friends called to him, bnt he only once turned and waved his hand in token ot good-bye. Learning from the boy that Geracb bad tried to drown him, the man's friends got into a vawl boat and rowed rapidly in pur suit Geracb, however, who was a very powerful swimmer, persistently headed on bis fatal course, using every exertion to outstrip his pur suers. They finally overtook him, but he swam around the boat and eluded all efforts to capture him. The boy stood up in the boat, and holding out his hands, cried: Fa- ther! Father! Don't leave me! Come back!" The desperate man was by this time growing weaker, and, swim ming up to the side ot the boat, said to his sen: "Give me your hand, Neddie, and help me in." Tho boy started to grasp the ontstretched hand, but one ot his companions, suspecting the father's intention, pushed him aside and held out his own hand to help tho drowning man into the boat. Geracb at once proved the meaning of the request to the boy by refusing to accept the proffer ed assistance. He swam rapidly away from the boat, and then allowed himself to sink, shoutiug as he went down, "Good bv, son! I trust in God." The boy fainted, and it was some moments before the trembling men could muster up strength enough to row back to the pungy. Tho body was recovered in a few hours and brought to the city to-day. Geracb leaves a wife and the one son. In a note to his wife he bad announced his intention of killing himself, aud said he would kill the boy, who was only 1U years old, so that he would not be a burden to his mother. Lord Salisbury appears to be in the predicament of the man who, in a cold winter night, caught a wolf by the cars, and after thoughtful consid eration concluded that if he let go the wolf would bite him, while if he held on he would freeze to death. Salisbury has accepted office, and if he gives it up again the Liberals will laugh him out of politics, while it he holds on the Gladstone majority in the Commons will tie him and his menistry baud and foot, so that although Tories, the cabinet wi'l virtually be carrying out a Liberal programe. Considering the circum stances attending the recent exit of the Gladstone cabinet, the G. O. AL does not seem to have been so badlv left, after all. Old man Clouinger of Columbia county, who was convicted of man slaughter at Hillsboro for killing l'rank Pierce, was taken to the penitentiary Monday to serve his ten years' sentence. He is now (U vears old, and as he is a robust man in good health, he is likely to live out Ins sentence. ilatny, Lawrcnee and Cooper, the three young men of Independence charged with murdering B. Coffey, the Marion county farmer, by beating him to death wiith clubs, were tried at the present term ot court in the third judicial district, and acquitted. 'o Jljsterj About it. The following editorial is copied from the Salt Lake Tribune of a late date: Senator Sherman's remarks in his Portland, Oregon, speech, that the fu ture of that region depended more on the completion of the Nicaragua canal, than all other internal improvements, is a proposition that will have to be debated before it can be settled. It means, we take it, that in the judg ment of the senator, all Oregon needs is cheap freights on the sea, that she may send abroad her wheat, her lum ber and her fish. We do not believo that tho Nicaragua canal would bring the greatest possible good that Ore gon could have. If an account could bo made of the value of the impor tance of tho state for the past year, we think it would be shown the sum equals tho value ot the fish, lumber and wheat shipped away. If Oregon could make arrangements to produce what sho buys, it would make work for 100.000 more menndTvomen ; there would be a great saving on first cost, and the state would in feeding and clothing this extra number of people, have no occasion for so much freight ing at sea. Then the Nicaragua canal would not be an unmixed gain to Oregon. A great many ships which, without it, will bring goods from tho Orient, and tranship their freight at Portland to go by rail across the continent, would never como that way, but, without breaking cargo, would pass through the canal and so on to our Atlantic ports or to Europe. Every cargo thus taken away would make the local freights on the railroad higher. We think the world needs the Nicaragua canal. We think the policy of a state like Oregon should be to utilize all its re sources; to encourage all kinds of manufactories which can be profita bly carried on in that locality, until the furnitnrc of the housps, the im plements used, on tho farms, the clothes worn by the people, the food eaten, and, generally, needed things of the people are produced on the soil. The communications should be perfected until all parts of tho state become easily aud cheaply accessible. Then what there is left to send away will be clear profit. The Nicaragua canal would not cheapen freight much on the one or two great articles of Oregon export. It would save some tunc in getting returns, but that would bo abont all the saving. Oregon is a state which, if detached from the continent and floated a tbousaud miles out to sea, would bold within herself every element of em pire. While that is true she does not need the Nicaragua canal, but rather to utilize her own wonderful sources of greatness Physicians and chemists certify that lied Star Cough Cure is free from opiates and narcotic.
